RONDELET, Jean Traité théorique et ratique de l'art de bâtir. Paris J. Rondelet 1808-1814 7 parts in 5 vol., folio: [xv]-448 (= 458), [2]-412-[4], 382-[8], [2]-504-[93] pp. (some min. repaired tears, light foxing). Contemp. calf, roller-stamped gilt. orn. binding (sm. def. at head of vol. 2). Good copy. Second ed. of a treatise on construction and building techniques. Jean Rondelet (1743-1829) began his career in 1770, working for Jacques-Germain Soufflot, the architect of the most conspicuous and structurally daring church of the period, now known as the Pantheon in Paris. Rondelet assumed the role of technical expert, taking on more and more control not only of the structural design but of the site organisation as well. The treatise was one of the most extensive books on civil engineering and architecture written to that time and had a huge impact on French architects of the following generation such as Viollet-le-Duc. In contrast to earlier treatises, the work not only focussed on antique and classical architecture, but also included examples from Byzantine, Egyptian and modern architecture. Richly ill. with 192 engr. plt. (complete) by P. Gaitte, A. Moisy, L.S. Thiery, J.-V. Adam, C. Normand, and P.B. Rondelet. Ref. Brunet IV:1373. - Bnf FRBNF31241927. - Not in Fowler or Berlin Kat. Joined: Aviler, Augustin-Charles d' - Cours d'Architecture qui comprend les Ordres de Vignole [...]. The Hague, P. Gosse & J. Neaulme, 1730. 1 vol (of 2), 4to: [92]-354-[2] (occ. dampstaining). First vol of third edition (first 1691) of this famous architectural manual by Augustin-Charles d'Aviler (1653-1700), who annotated the classic text by Giacomo Barozzio called Vignola (1507-1573). Gallet. Printed within ruled borders. Ref. BnF. - Fowler 33. - Berlin Kat. 2388-2390. - STCN 330607766. (2 vol)
