              Dec. 08, 2024

              Abdul Latiff Mohidin (b. 1941) Mindscape, 1980s

              Est: RM70,000 - RM120,000

Abdul Latiff Mohidin's Mindscape is a fixed dome portal where ephemeral thoughts travel through space and time usually with the markings, whether textural or tonal, espousing a singular theme like psychedelia, chaos or sedation. This is from the second tranche, from 1979 to 1985, where an irregular orange blob takes centrestage, the periphery blotted with squiggles 'floating' in space. At the bottom of the inner dome is infested with reddish dot profusions on a darker blue veneer. This is a mood Mindscape using colours - the base colour is blue - and where slivers of raw, dirty yellow pepper the whole composition. Wrote Tengku Sabri Ibrahim, curator of 60 Years of Latiff Mohidin Retrospective: "Compositions in the Mindscape 2 series largely integrate architectural forms - arches and domes - in which are to be found shapes resembling 'doors'. These compositions are based on a single-point perspective with crossing lines running towards the middle. Painter-printmaker -sculptor-poet Latiff Mohidin made a quantum leap in his career as an artist when his landmark Pago-Pago (1960-1969) was exhibited at the world-class venue, Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2018. A national treasure, Latiff was accorded his second Retrospective (Latiff Mohidin 60 Years) by the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 2012-2013. Latiff was trained at three great institutions: the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste, Berlin; the Atelier La Courier-Frelaut, Paris; and Pratt Institute, New York. He was awarded 2nd Prize (Graphic) in the Salon Malaysia in 1968. He is a literary giant, having won the SEA Write Award in Bangkok in 1984 and 1986, the National Literary Award in 1984 and 1986, and the Malaysian Government literary prize from 1972-1976. He was a Creative Fellow at Universiti Sains Malaysia (1977) and a guest writer at the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (1988).

              Est: RM11,000 - RM18,000

In this work from the Pago-Pago series, we can see a confluence of architectural forms derived from Southeast Asia, and organic elements influenced by the growth patterns of nature. Here, the vertical structure rises with dynamic strength from the ground, concentrating a myriad of shapes such as bamboo, leaves, curling shells, boats and architectural elements into a dense mass. His refreshing visual language captures the unique vibrancy of the landscape and culture of the region. Abdul Latiff Mohidin (b. 1941) Red Wetlands, 2002

              Est: RM200,000 - RM350,000

Who would have thought the wetlands mostly associated with swamps, marshes and bogs could manifest in a tapestry of orangey reds with splurges of yellowy sheens and an overlapping spray of iridescent blue in the left bottom diagonal. What's behind this happy outburst dominated by a fiery bright red. This 2002 aberrant work comes smacked into Latiff's more diaristic Voyage phase of exotic places and poetry allusions spanning between 2001 to 2008 but with the compositions going back even to the ancient past. Or pertinently reminiscent more of his earlier Rimba Series during the second half of the 1990s or his Rawa-Rawa (Marshlands) book of poems in 1992. Whatever, such manifestations of wetlands often regarded as the kidney of the landscape, can only bode well in keeping the biodiversity and mitigating climate change. How underrated that such ecological balance is integral in the long run to human survival. Abdul Latiff Mohidin’s Berlin Series marks a pivotal juncture in the artist’s trajectory. While studying at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in West Berlin during the early 1960s, he was immersed in the vibrant art scene, exposed to avant-garde movements like Cubism, Futurism, and Surrealism. This European influence, however, did not eclipse Mohidin’s deep-rooted connection to his Southeast Asian heritage. His Berlin works reveal a fascinating interplay between the abstract forms and geometric structures of Western modernism and the organic, biomorphic shapes inspired by his native landscape. This fusion is evident in his exploration of line, form, and space, resulting in compositions that are both intellectually stimulating and visually arresting.

(L.I.N.E. Latiff Mohidin: From Point to Point, Page 134), emphasising on the “rhythm and architecture” ... “Resolve intensifies, work multiplies.” In 1964, Latiff was returning home from his Art studies in Germany. The same year, he held a solo exhibition at the Bangkapi Gallery in Bangkok where he unveiled his Pago-Pago works although he may have also done so in a solo show at the Laden Galerie in Berlin. Interestingly, there seems to be a touch of humour with his cactus-like protrusions looking like some kind of humanoid plant with head and limbs.

              Est: RM120,000 - RM240,000

A world within worlds, within worlds … ad infinitum. Latiff Mohidin's Mindscape is a meditative portal into self-discovery and introspection sluicing in-and-out of time zones of memories: faces, muted voices, glacial movements and respite, in phlegmatic calm. They seem to be boxed in architectural forms like arches and domes. The human mind, a fundamental resource, protean and real, makes for a catalyst of art. Latiff was lulled into two Mindscapes, with the sculptural (assemblage) Langkawi slipped in between. As Albert Einstein had intoned: “The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking.” Painter-printmaker-poet-sculptor Latiff Mohidin hit the world stage when his landmark Pago-Pago Series (1960-1969) was chosen to kick-start Southeast Asian art foray into the West, at the Centre Pompidou in Paris on Feb 28-May 28, 2018. Latiff was awarded a major Retrospective at the National Art Gallery in December 2012 to June 2013. His art studies were at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunst in West Berlin. He was also awarded the John D. Rockefeller III Fellowship to study at Pratt Institute in New York, and the French scholarship to study printmaking at the Atelier Lacouriere-Frelaut in Paris. He also won 2nd Prize (Graphics) in the 1968 Salon Malaysia. In literature, he won the SEA Write Award twice (1984 and 1986) and the Malaysian Literary Awards from 1972 to 1976, and he was also appointed Guest Writer at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka in 1988.

              Est: RM15,000 - RM25,000

This work came at the tail-end of Latiff Mohidin's iconic Pago-Pago series that synthesised Southeast Asian anthropology and architectural monuments and engendered a unique Southeast Asian Modernism. Tropika and Voyage were both done at the Pratt Graphics Centre in New York when he studied printmaking there, in 1969, after the socio-political fissures of the May 13 internecine riots. On Pago-Pago, Tengku Sabri Ibrahim, curator of the Abdul Latiff Mohidin Retrospective at the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, wrote: "The influence of the style of German Expressionism is primarily strong in the Pago-Pago series. The line, colours and compositional elements reveal the expressive energy of a young artist with all his wiles and guts." Latiff Mohidin is a national treasure in painting, printmaking, sculpting, literature and letters (poet, essayist and translator), being fluent in three languages – Malay, English and German. He started as a hobo, where he created the iconic Pago-Pago series (1960-1969), the headlined mega three-month exhibition held at the prestigious Pompidou Centre in Paris in 2018, and organised by the National Gallery Singapore and Pompidou. Latiff was awarded a major Retrospective at the National Art Gallery Malaysia in December 2012 to June 2013, his second. His art studies were at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunst in West Berlin. He won the John D. Rockefeller III Fellowship to study at Pratt Institute in New York (1965), and the French scholarship to study printmaking at the Atelier Lacouriere-Frelaut in Paris (1969).

This work came at the tail-end of Latiff Mohidin's iconic Pago-Pago series that synthesised Southeast Asian anthropology and architectural monuments and engendered a unique Southeast Asian Modernism. Voyage could be wedged under Latiff's Neo-Pago-Pago. Tropika and Voyage were both done at the Pratt Graphics Centre in New York when he studied printmaking there, in 1969, after the socio-political fissures of the May 13 internecine riots. Voyage here is not to be confused with the full-blown Voyage series (2005-2007) tribute to literary icons and ancient places at Galeri Petronas, Kuala Lumpur, in 2007. Abdul Latiff Mohidin (b. 1941) Siri Gelombang, 1992

              Est: RM23,000 - RM33,000

This piece on offer was derived from Latiff's gestural period Gelombang – a series that depicts powerful notions of pure expressions and explosions of movements painted in nature's palette. The manner in which this piece was executed owes to Latiff's exposure to Abstract Expressionism during his years of art education in Berlin as well as a brief stint later in New York. The Gelombang series was conceived after the carefully composed Mindscape, offering an invigorating pulse. The series greeted the Malaysian art scene by surprise with the artist's broad brushwork, swathes of earthy colour and layer upon layer of paint, which was absent in the immaculate and hard outline of the earlier series. Tinges of earthy ochre, green and blue interweave in Latiff's instantly recognisable brushstrokes, dominate and play out against each other. The gestural frenzy combines the scrapingly dry and the lathers of wet in a forward thrust and rigorously so. These intentional gestures aim to exude a surge of excitation, and the urgent and rapid brushstrokes suggest the artist's sense of euphoria. Abdul Latiff Mohidin breaks down barriers of thoughts in lines and forms, on canvas or board or printed on paper, in sculptures and on printed text. He became the toast of Asian art when he was selected to be the first Southeast Asian artist to feature in a major solo at the prestigious Pompidou Centre in Paris in 2018, with his iconic Pago-Pago series no less. The thrust of his themes is in the intellect, the physical structures both natural and manmade juxtaposed in an awkward pose. Fluent in English and Bahasa Malaysia, he added German to his linguistic repertoire. As poet and writer, he had won the Malaysian Literary Awards from 1972-1976, besides the SEA Write Award twice (1984, 1986), and was also guest writer in Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (1988). His tutelage was tripartite – German: DAAD German Academy in Bonn; American: John D. Rockefeller III Fellowship; and French: Printmaking at Atelier La Courier in Paris. Early on in his career, he won the 2nd Prize (Graphic) in the hugely coveted Salon Malaysia in 1968.

Frank Sullivan, the pioneer shaper of Malayan art, wrote of Latiff Mohidin's solo exhibition at Balai Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, in 1966, of 40 paintings and 20 sketches, describing the oeuvre of the artist, then aged only 25, especially the architectonic thrusts of the monuments of stones and natural growth as "the shape of boats (especially the prows), agave leaves and other plant forms, birds and their wings, the rhythmic flow of buffalo horns, aspects of the lingam, the lines of eaves and arches, or the patterns and motifs in pagodas or temples…", while artist-critic-thespian John Lee Joo For wrote eloquently about the "subtle haunting colours and recondite symbols" of his "vegetative forms, figures and his fetish-forms such as Shivalinga." This intuitive broken squiggles like calligraphy represent the lowland peat swamps so crucial to the balance of the ecosystems of animal, bird, plant and marine life. They resemble root structures of pneumatophores in mangrove forests. The stark, sparse lines in the work reveal the fragility and vulnerability of indiscriminate human intervention. With Southeast Asia cornering some 60 percent of the world's tropical peatlands, storing vast amounts of carbon below ground, the decimation of these habitats through clearing, burning or drainage for conversion to plantation crops and other uses, is a recipe for ecological disaster. The importance of peat cannot be under-estimated. In the UK, it has banned sale of peat compost from 2024 and has even allocated the equivalent of some RM293m for the restoration of peatland.

The mindscape portal is inviting with an arched inner dome to mentally traverse in, the darker greenish veneer providing a protective embrace from the red yonder. It has an enigmatic form. What lies ahead is shrouded in a coalescing smithereens of pellet shapes. Everything is nebulous, ambiguous. The course and trajectory are shaped by the viewer's mood, emotions or thoughts as much as dictated by the artist's intent. This 1983 work represents Latiff Mohidin's second tranche of his Mindscape series, from 1979 to 1985, after an inexplicable hiatus from the first, between 1970 and 1974. Has the thread of consciousness been broken in the interim years, or does the visible standard structure create a link, however tenuous? Tengku Sabri Ibrahim, curator of Latiff Mohidin's Retrospective at the National Art Gallery, intoned: "Compositions in the Mindscape 2 series largely integrate architectural forms - arches and domes - in which are to be found shapes resembling 'doors'. Nature has always fascinated Abdul Latiff. Rimba translates as primaeval forest: an entity that stands the tests of time and change, an entity that symbolises growth and a sense of continuity across space and time. In the Rimba works, especially the works executed during the period from 1995 to 1997, Latiff Mohidin seems to call on his viewers to adopt a highly tactile, highly visceral mode of appreciation. Born in 1941, Latiff started painting at an early age and by 10 he was holding his first exhibition at Kota Raja Malay School in Singapore, and was dubbed in the local press as the “boy wonder”. He is well-known as a poet as well. He was trained in art at Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste in Germany, Atelier La Courriere in France and Pratt Graphic Centre in America. Wetlands are like Nature's living museums that help sustain ecological balance whether they be marshes, bogs, mangroves, mudflats or swaps. They help support a biodiversity of life under water, on land and in flight besides the vegetative organisms. The topography looks parched, at turns dessicated even, with a cream-coloured and a parlous off-white veneer, and oxidised pinkish hues and organic ash-like mangroves. But left as it is, it can produce conditions and nutrients including the micro-organisms suitable for sustaining all kinds of life, resident and migratory. This environment-tinged work falls under the ambit of Latiff Mohidin's solo exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum called Journey To The Wetlands and Beyond, from March to May 2009. Latiff Mohidin is a living national art treasure. He is fluent with, and has written in, Bahasa, German and English. It's interesting to note this 1966 Pago-Pago with its almost circular centrist monolith, with what looks like a hole in the centre, and bereft of the usual sharp flanges at the top, or at least some tiered pagoda typical of his Southeast Asian travels. It looks like some kind of plant form rather than a man-made structure. Latiff Mohidin was still in Europe, most probably Berlin, after imbibing the great European modern artistic impulses all over with the after-thought how these were inspired, influenced by other “non-European” cultures. How what he called the “trunk root of tradition” could prevail even when the painting's preoccupation was on divergent and unrelated subjects or images. As he intoned: “Art is a living energy, art is like a flowing river…” Latiff Mohidin’s international profile took a quantum leap with the landmark Pago-Pago (1960-1969) exhibition at the prestigious Centre Pompidou in Paris on Feb 28-May 28, 2018. Abdul Latiff Mohidin is an artist that likes to invent his own rules to create new things. The Gelombang is strong and dramatic, yet has an elegant feel and sophistication. The jagged colours take you on a journey through the artist’s mind, beckoning the viewer to understand what the motif of the painting and reflective of its aloof nature. The Gelombang series or “waves of energy” was conceived after the carefully composed Mindscape, offering an invigorating pulse.

Abdul Latiff Mohidin is an artist that likes to invent his own rules, to create new things. This piece is strong, dramatic, orderly and precise in terms of brushwork and composition. This series explores the relationship between shapes, figures, colours, balance, perception and the mind of the artist. The resulting abstract art is the representation of the artist’s contemplating and dedication to this piece of art. Latiff’s works bear a distinctively cosmopolitan outlook in terms of the successful development of a modern abstract visual language and a sustained exploration of world art and literature. An avid traveller, the artist’s travels, specifically to Ubud, Bali inspired this unique monochrome watercolour piece, executed meticulously.

Ikurua (Song Of A Bird) presents a play of rich colour, tone and texture within an intriguing illustration. The artist was evidently influenced by cubist elements where the composition is broken down and presented in abstract forms and from multiple perspectives. Note how the composition, though uneven and precarious, is still harmonious to the eye. Abdul Latiff Mohidin is a poet, painter, printmaker and sculptor. He received his education at Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste in Germany, studied printmaking at Atelier La Courriere in France and Pratt Graphic Centre in New York, USA. He received honours and awards such as the Malaysia’s National Literary Prize and the Southeast Asian’s Writer’s Award in 1984. Hailed as a ‘boy wonder’ by the local press when he held his first solo at the Kota Raja Malay School in 1951 at the age of ten, he has come a long way to earn himself the distinction of being one of the leading modern Southeast Asian artists. From the monumental and arresting Pago-Pago to the dynamic and perpetual Gelombang, Latiff never fail to surprise viewers with fresh ideas in every series.

Everything in life and in Nature, is interlinked. What we do or what happens naturally leads to something, and even if it looks as if there’s nothing, there’s something. The man-made anvils of monument can be vulnerable no matter how strong and fortified to the unpredictable forces of Nature in its darkest moods. This made Latiff Mohidin aware of how deprived and spiritually impoverished we were when ‘trapped’ in the obdurate and unfriendly monoliths of the urban jungle of New York City. As printmaker Juhari Said noted, in his research into Latiff Mohidin’s graphic works, being railroaded into New York at the Pratt Graphic Centre (1970), Latiff developed a new mindset, which resulted in a seismic shift in his artistic style and production from the organic growth of his Pago-Pago to a phalanx of lines and geometric shapes. “That was the end of his Pago-Pago phase,” Juhari avers. Latiff had imbibed the best of printmaking in the German tradition (Berlin), the French touches (Atelier La Couriere) and the American contemporaneity. A national treasure in paint, print (printmaking), bronze / stainless steel (sculpture) and letters (poet, essayist and translator in three languages – Malay, English and German), Latiff Mohidin hit a career peak in art when his celebrated Pago-Pago series (1960-1969) headlined a three-month exhibition at the prestigious Pompidou Centre in Paris from February to May 2018. He was awarded a major Retrospective by the National Art Gallery in December 2012 to June 2013, his second. He studied at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunst in West Berlin. His international awards included the John D. Rockefeller III Fellowship to study at Pratt Institute (1965) and the French scholarship to study printmaking at the Atelier Lacouriere-Frelaut in Paris (1969). Locally, he won 2nd Prize (Graphics) in the 1968 Salon Malaysia. In literature, his awards included the SEA Write Award (1984 and 1986) and the Malaysian Literary Awards from 1972 to 1976.

As a little girl, I loved to doodle at the corners of my Math exercise book because I was bored and my tutor told my mother about this. Latiff Mohidin often stayed with us after his return from Berlin. Pakcik Latip, as I used to fondly call him and still do, advised my parents to let me discover my talent rather than reprimand me. My parents took his advice. So, I was put in an International Art Class organised by the American Expatriate Women in Kuala Lumpur. This class was held every Saturday in a school. I loved it as we got to experiment and play with paint, charcoal, clay, etcetera. Our subjects were still life, nature, figures, patterns from leaves, fruits and so on. I even won a main prize in an art competition — a portrait in charcoal, my favourite medium. I have moved on to classical dance and eventually writing. All thanks to Pakcik Latip’s intervention. In 1969, Latiff Mohidin received a grant from the French Art Cultural Ministry to attend the Atelier La Courrier in Paris and another grant for a Rockefeller Scholarship to attend Pratt Graphic Center, New York. In 1970 he returned home to a different landscape in Malaysia after the grave May 13 incident in 1969. By then he had exhausted his Pago-Pago series. At the same time, Malaysian writers and artists came together and became more vocal and stronger in their fight to realise a stand for the right and identity of a better multi-racial Malaysia. In the midst of this influence, Latiff was staying with us once again. He started a new series. The first piece was done at our house and it was titled Rebirth. In appreciation to my parents who he came to love as his brother and sister, he gave the painting Rebirth, signing at the back of the painting before he moved on. He then went on to do more of this series. In a television documentary interview somewhere in 2013, Latiff mentioned that there were about more or less thirty pieces in this series after he concluded it. Sadly, it was all lost after an exhibition in the Commonwealth Art Institute, London, in 1973. After some time, he found out that a friend in Dublin bought a piece from this series. In that 2013 documentary interview, this painting was shown. It has the same technique, structure, similar motif and form as Rebirth. LARALUKA 21/10/21

              Est: RM75,000 - RM100,000

There is a similar piece with a similar title in off-red monochrome and measuring 26cm x 18cm, which is illustrated in the book, LINE: Latiff Mohidin, From Point To Point (Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, English-translated, 1993). It may be just a melange of “strokes, scratches and scrawls” and with a dash of wit, probably because of the inherent diamond-shaped patterns, it gets the moniker, harlequin, and a Kelantan one at that, probably a stylised reference in the Makyong or Menora traditional dramas, which are now suppressed. The Pago-Pago series is derived from the anatomical architecture of trees or plants, or the root tendrils of ruins from ancient buildings. A national treasure in paint, print (printmaking), bronze (sculpture) and letters (poet, essayist and translator in three languages – Malay, English and German), Latiff Mohidin hit a career peak in art when his celebrated Pago-Pago Series (1960-1969) headlined a three-month exhibition at the prestigious Pompidou Centre in Paris from February to May 2018. Ilham Gallery presented the same celebrated series from August to December, that same year. National Gallery Singapore presented Latiff Mohidin: Pago Pago from March to September 2020. What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow Out of this story rubbish? ….. A heap of broken images, where the sun beats, And the dead tree gives not shelter, the cricket no relief, And the dry stone no sound of water These refrain (19-20, 22-24) from T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land (1922) reflects an icicle graveness of a glorious monument now in ruins or the dying throes of fragmentation, yet hanging on precariously to the tendrils of survival. Nature has a way of healing itself, camouflaging or concealing cracked edifices symbolic of a presence, with echoes of a time lost, and battles lost and won. Cries and whispers, song and dance, laughter and tears. Can pain be sutured and merriment mothballed in the quaint existence of life and its struggles? Alas, all that is left is some cryptic parlous forms and shapes that can induce certain fears, hopes or dreams that crest or disappear with the wind. This Pago-Pago work comes after Latiff Mohidin’s studies in Berlin, Germany, from 1960 to 1964, and his travels around Indo-China, e.g. Cambodia, Thailand. The voyage series, contrary to what it indicates, was created in Latiff Mohidin’s studio. When he wasn’t travelling, the artist continued to explore the world through his imagination. The essence of Voyage is the recurrent element of a stylised boat whose origin can be traced to one of the earliest drawings of the Pago Pago series, entitled, Solitude, Bangkok, 1964. Nearly 40 years later, Latiff embarks on a study of the boat as the main element of the composition, developing the first shapes in a preliminary sketch executed in 2003. The boat has become a symbol of the artist’s imaginary travels. Gestural like from the Gelombang Series, it reveals more ruminative impinges and with more glacial strokes.

The current owner of this magnificent stainless steel sculpture appreciated the work as a hornbill sculpted in abstract expression. The hornbill (bucerotidae) with its down-curved bill, often with a casque on the upper mandible, is one of the most ornithological specimens in the world being found in sub-Saharan Africa, the Indian subcontinent and Asia (mainly Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines). Sarawak has even adopted the rhinoceros hornbill (buceros rhinoceros), a sacred bird of the Dayaks, as its state emblem. It is not uncommon for creatures or plants / flowers to be used to symbolise people, country / state through myths, legends and modern branding. For instances, the mythical Merlion and Vanda Miss Joaquim (Singapore), the giant panda or Ailuropoda melanoleuca (China), and the Malayan tiger and bunga raya or hibiscus (Malaysia). For Latiff Mohidin, whose art is partly based on paleontology like his series, Serangga (a kind of insect pests). It’s inexorable that he picked on the hornbill because of the curious shape of its head as a sacred object of veneration, denoting power and myths, and through its polished reflective surface one of beauty. The emphasis is on its elongated beak extending like a slide easing movement as well as a device to dislodge (preys and predators). The beaks torn from the hornbill are used as traditional headgear of the Dayaks, investing on the wearer a badge of bravery and awe. The rhinoceros hornbill and the great hornbill are among the eight most distinct species found in Malaysia.

This intuitive broken squiggles like calligraphy represent the lowland peat swamps so crucial to the balance of the ecosystems of animal, bird, plant and marine life. They resemble root structures of pneumatophores in mangrove forests. The stark, sparse lines in the work reveal the fragility and vulnerability of indiscriminate human intervention. With Southeast Asia cornering some 60 percent of the world’s tropical peatlands, storing vast amounts of carbon below ground, the decimation of these habitat through clearing, burning or drainage for conversion to plantation crops and other uses, is a recipe for ecological disaster. The importance of peat cannot be under-estimated. In the UK, it has banned sale of peat compost from 2024 and had even allocated the equivalent of some RM293m for the restoration of peatland.

Voyage, as the word implies, is a journey but in Latiff Mohidin’s parlance, one not inhibited by time or geography, but maybe lodged in Nature or evoking a time or place long, long past. So, it’s invariably given to symbols or signs or even recondite shapes, lacking in forms or even meanings. As the artist himself has expressed so cryptically in his book, LINE: From Point To Point (Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, 1993), with a rhetorical question: How do you express something that cannot be touched, held or grasped? How do you clarify feelings and non-concrete things? … And answering himself, almost rhetorically: “In doing work that involves his whole psyche, he is sometimes forgetful. And sometimes he is too aware of the limits of his ability and freedom…”

Bukhara is an ancient city along the Silk Road and a medieval Islamic hub in present-day Uzbekistan, a land-locked country in Central Asia. With a long history spanning five millenia of habitation, it is replete with the blood, sweat and tears of wayfarers, merchants, conquerors and builders. Mausoleums, fortresses, mosques and minarets stand as testimonies of a long, chequered history but a relatively young nation when it broke away from the Soviet yolk in 1991. Bukhara is now a world heritage site. Latiff Mohidin’s interpretation is a haphazard double clusters of loose broad strokes of diluted ‘dirty’ black with faint blue shimmers at the edges, and some kind of squat structures on top.
