        Noor Mahnun Mohamed (b. 1964) Leave(s) Of Absence, 2003

        Est: RM4,500 - RM7,500

The unique blend of femininity and mystery is strongly conveyed in this piece. The first scene is almost similar to a piece titled Am Abend, 1993 that was sold in Henry Butcher Art Auction in April 2018, which features a lady on a geometric patterned floor. The second female figure is accompanied by a monkey by the window while the moonlight shines through. The third figure appears topless under a translucent scarf exposing the upper part of her body. Effortless as it may seem Noor Mahnun's meticulous and refined work often features women as a subject matter. Noor Mahnun Mohamed also known as Anum participated in a yearlong Malaysia-Australia Visual Arts Residency in 2000 and produced works which were then exhibited at Rimbun Dahan the following year. Besides making art, she held the position of Visual Arts Residency Manager at Rimbun Dahan for a few years. The artist returned to Malaysia at the end of 1997 having spent seven years studying for her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Fine Arts at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste, Braunschweig, Germany (1989-1996), and exhibiting broadly in Europe. She was also awarded the Italian Government Scholarship to study printmaking at the International School of Print and Graphic Il Bisonte, Florence in 2003. The artist's solo exhibition titled Disco Lombok Still Life was held at The Edge Galerie in 2017. Her works transcend the conventions of still life, figurative and landscape painting, inspired by the Old Masters of the European tradition.

Noor Mahnun Mohamed (b. 1964) Swimming Pool III (Rumah Gunnery), 2006

        Est: RM35,000 - RM60,000

Nothing beats a refreshing dip in a swimming pool, especially on a hot day in a plush residential condominium setting or clubhouse. Lounging on a deckchair with a partner sipping fruit juice amidst a well manicured garden. And a blue-tiled pool at that, with a sense of depth. The arc lines in the pool trace the water quadrant. This is from Noor Mahnun Mohamed's Swimming Pool Series, of which she did three pieces. The work is somewhat reminescent of David Hockney's A Bigger Splash with flat Pop colours in sunny California, and different from her anticipated surreal repertoire of interior domestic life... Splash! Noor Mahnun Mohamed, better known as Anum, is one artist who strayed from the usual art citadels of Britain and the United States, being trained in Germany - like Latiff Mohidin - earning her BFA and then MFA at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste, in Braunschweig. Her other tutelage was in Florence (International School of Print and Graphic Il Bisonte) and Japan (Nippon Foundation grant for Digital Archive for Printmaking). She was also an artist-in-residence at the Gunnery Studios in Sydney. Her Am Abend (1993) rose to a RM235,200 premium at the Henry Butcher April 29, 2018. Her international profile preceded her return: solos in Florence in Italy, and Braunschweig (twice), besides 2nd Prize in the Alpirsbach Galerie competition. She was also an artist-in-residence at Rimbun Dahan, which she later briefly managed.

        Noor Mahnun Mohamed (b. 1964) Pital, 2004

        Est: RM8,000 - RM14,000

One of Noor Mahnun's finest portraits, the work is distinguished using light and subtle shading, which gives definition to the face. Portrayed in a rather relaxed manner, the sitter looks towards the viewer with his dark brown eyes and reflects a thoughtful gaze. The use of bold, earthy hues in depicting the contrasts of light increases the freshness of the portrait. Noor Mahnun Mohamed, also known as Anum, participated in a yearlong Malaysia-Australia Visual Arts Residency in 2000 and produced works which were then exhibited at Rimbun Dahan the following year. Noor Mahnun Mohamed (b. Kelantan, 1964) A Song For Two, 2000

        Est: RM90,000 - RM160,000

Since Noor Mahnun Mohamed’s Am Abend (1993) raced to a dizzying premium of RM235,200 at the Henry Butcher April 29, 2018 auction, she has attracted scrutiny as one of the most watched artists of her age bracket. Her works are often imbued with dark psychological nuances, sedate and detached with a flattened space. The subject or theme is invariably about seemingly mundane, everyday action, or non-action, in an aura of silence, hinting at something more than the ordinary. Two figures in a room paradoxically hemmed in by cube matrix patterns, reflecting somewhat the artist’s truncated architectural background. One is holding the microphone and the other the dangling wire, set presumably on stage in a dance hall. Because of the composition and subdued colours, you seem to get an unnerving sense of isolation, distance, awkwardness, even ennui. So, if the song has yet to be sung, can you dance? Poised in a state of inertia... Noor Mahnun Mohamed, better known as Anum, is an artist, curator, art manager, lecturer and writer. She famously took up Art (BFA and MFA) when in Germany, at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste, in Braunschweig, from 1989 to 1996. In 1995, she won 2nd Prize in the Alpirsbach Gallery competition. On her return, she won the artist’s residency in Rimbun Dahan (2000-2001) and Gunnery Studios in Sydney (2005). Her first four solos were in Europe, and she had two notable solos at the Valentine Willie Fine Art in Kuala Lumpur. NN Gallery held her solo in 2010, while The Edge Galerie held her solo, Disco Lombok Still Life by Noor Mahnun, in 2017. In 2002-2003, she won an Italian Government scholarship to study at the International School of Print and Graphic Il Bisonte, Florence, and in 2012-2013, the Nippon Foundation grant for Digital Archive for Printmaking.

The name itself is sophisticated however this type of flower is a favourite among the Filipinos garden enthusiast. Apr. 29, 2018

NOOR MAHNUN MOHAMED (b. 1964) AM ABEND, 1993, Oil on canvas

        Est: RM35,000 - RM60,000

Enigmatic and visually captivating, this work is one of the most superior exemplars of Noor Mahnun’s early period. Painted while the artist was completing her fine art studies in Germany, a lady is seen half dressed, and stands isolated in front of a large blue wardrobe. In a silent moment, she holds a red fabric with lowered eyes in deep contemplation. The interior is softly illuminated by a gentle light which passes through the windows, with floors rendered intricately using flat perspective. Using pictorial elements such as the composition of the human form and still life, the artist succeeds in conveying a meditative stillness which arrests the audience. Noor Mahnun Mohamed also known as Anum participated in a yearlong Malaysia-Australia Visual Arts Residency in 2000 and produced works which were then exhibited at Rimbun Dahan the following year. Possessing a quiet charm and a powerful sense of intrigue, this piece illustrates a dreamy scene with a male figure and a deer composed of little bubbles. Spherical shapes highlighting the focal point gently frame the composition, adding a sense of depth and harmony.
