One of the founding members of the Matahati artist's cooperative, Ahmad Shukri's Black Dog Series contains motifs such as dogs, hornbill and a hoop. The olive green and black palette combined with abstract shapes resemble camouflage patterns. Ahmad Shukri graduated from the Mara Institute of Technology in 1991. He first tasted success when he won the 1st Prize in the one-off Malaysian Art Open at Galeri Petronas in 1994, with his work of chloroformed butterflies. In 1997, he won the Major Award in the Young Contemporary Artists (Bakat Muda Sezaman) competition and the Juror's Choice Award in the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards finals in the Philippines. AHMAD SHUKRI MOHAMED : Untitled, 2000

    Est: RM8,000 - RM14,000

In Ahmad Shukri Mohamed’s works, there is a departure from the immaculacy of painting on canvas towards texture, three-dimensionality, and mixed media. His early works, for instance, do not possess the expressionist angst of his Matahati peers, but heightened explorations of material and form. This can be seen in the artist’s Hope, Dishonest series (1988-90), final year works at UiTM. The series speaks of societal hierarchies and, as they are the earliest indications of the artist’s signatory style, offers a good point for contrast and examination. These collage works feature blends of pastel, acrylic paint, pencil, and stickers. In a work from 1990, images of children are included (recalling the paintings of war-stricken children that Bayu Utomo Radjikin produced during this period) to intensify the underlying message of social inequalities.

Inspired by nature, Ahmad Shukri Mohamed's paintings convey a meaningful message that is for the preservation of the rainforest. The butterflies in Shukri's paintings also symbolise nature's beauty that have become his trademark. A mixed media extraordinaire, Shukri works with an array of medium such as acrylic, oil, collages and silk screen on fabric. In this work, ties (often worn by salesmen) are incorporated into the work, with a clear message at the top: Salesmen Are Not Allowed In This Area Thank You. Ahmad Shukri Mohamed obtained a Bachelor of Degree in Fine Arts, Mara Institute of Technology (UiTM) in 1992. He had a stint lecturing at his alma mater before becoming a full-time artist. Ahmad Shukri Mohamed (b. 1969) 939495969798, 1998

    Est: RM35,000 - RM60,000

The 1990s were heady days for Ahmad Shukri Mohamed with a work using butterfly motifs clinching the Major Prize in the one-off Malaysian Art Open (MAO) in 1994, while Insect Diskette, also with images of the papillon, won the Juror's Choice Award in the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards finals in 1997 (he won again in the same competition in 1999). Using chloroformed butterflies as an analogy of extinction, Shukri set them about in his Target Series, Bar Code Series and Diskette Series. This work, 939495969798, was highlighted on the cover of the eponymous exhibition, his first solo, at Art Salon, Kuala Lumpur, in 1998, and also on Page 29 of the catalogue. Apart from being chloroformed specimens like trophies in hobbies, the butterfly, one of Nature's most colourful creatures, could also end up as only images stored in computer diskettes. Besides the above accolades, Ahmad Shukri Mohamed, a founding member of the cult Matahati art collective, hit big time when he won the hugely coveted Major Award in the Young Contemporary Artists (BMS) competition in 1997 with his Cabinet Series, and the group went international in the landmark Matahati Ke Mata Dunia exhibition in Los Angeles, the United States in 2009. Apart from art-residencies in Rimbun Dahan (2003) and the Netherland's Exchange (2013), he was also invited for the Sharjah Biennial (2003), the Emaar art symposium in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (2004), the Asian Biennale (Bangladesh, 2001), the Asian contemporary workshop in Gazipur, Bangladesh (2002) and the Brande Workshop (Denmark, 2002). Late 2019, he had his 9th solo called Monuments at Segaris Art Centre, Kuala Lumpur.

Throughout his practice, Ahmad Shukri Mohamed's paintings convey a meaningful message that is for the preservation of the rainforest. A convocation of eagles is portrayed realistically, soaring within the natural environment. It's also a good symbol: soaring high represents prosperity. Enchanting pink and yellow roses are finely combined with subtle gradations of colour and shadow, endowing the painting with a magical charm. A mixed media extraordinaire, Shukri works with an array of medium such as acrylic, oil, collages and silk screen on fabric. Located at the lower part of the canvas is a repetitive mirrored image of the word ‘YEAH’.

This set of multi-coloured butterfly drawings by Ahmad Shukri Mohamed offers a preliminary idea of a larger body of work, probably for his iconic Butterfly series, or for a commissioned project. His nature-themed artworks are produced in multi-layers to create visual depth. His technical ability to master mixed media makes his compositions distinctive and unique. In this piece a green origami boat is set in the center amongst colourful organic shapes as if it is blended but visible to see. A closer look to this painting you can see varieties of insects are drawn intricately in its individual blocks as a background. However it is covered with splashes of colour. The subject of this piece is rather interesting as it appeared to be different from the artist's usual style. Ahmad Shukri Mohamed striked a high profile among members of the art collective Matahati. His accolades include 1st Prize in the one off Malaysian Art Open (1994), Major Award in the Young Contemporary Artists (BMS) (1997), and the Minor Award in the Mural Satu Malaysia competition (2014). Negara Ku #3 is a contemplative presentation of nature as a valuable resource and asset. Continuously exploring arrangement of colour codes and living elements, these scenes evoke an inviting atmosphere highlighting the interconnectedness of each species within the ecosystem. Magnificent blooms of the hibiscus flower in bright red prosper in abundance, symbolizing the nations five principles: Belief in God; Loyalty to the King and Country; Upholding the Constitution; Rule of Law, Good Behaviour and Morality. The Golden Gate is described as a form of entry towards knowledge, stemming from the abundant resource of nature. Intricate birds in flight suggest a sense of movement and dynamic energy enveloped within the thickets of foliage. Teeming with life, the works of Ahmad Shukri captures the importance of preserving nature and biodiversity within the ecosystem. Ahmad Shukri graduated from the Mara Institute of Technology in 1991. There's no telling how and where all the genetic tinkering will lead to, no matter how innocuous the intent. After the excitement of cloning Dolly The Sheep, the experiments have expanded to human body parts, and even a full human! Imagine, cloning a Hitler or an Einstein, will he turn out to be the next Frankenstein? There’s the question of Nature versus Nurture. Animals are being miniaturised like the teacup puppies and the Serama (ayam katik) or dwarf chicken in the late 1990s. The Serama, developed in Kelantan, lies at the core of Ahmad Shukri Mohamed’s Incubator Series, with probable allusions to social engineering. There’s no dichotomy of the elements with what looks like nucleic cells all over. Moral or ethical issues may rankle, but the aesthetics of harmonising and manufactured conflicts in this art piece is another form of tinkering. Ahmad Shukri Mohamed strikes a high profile among members of the art collective Matahati. His accolades include 1st Prize in the one-off Malaysian Art Open (1994), Major Award in the Young Contemporary Artists (BMS) (1997), and the Minor Award in the Mural Satu Malaysia competition (2014). This painting is reminiscent of one’s childhood, embodying a spontaneous and casual manner. Aside from the colours that adorn the canvas, there are recognisable bits and pieces of the things we saw, doodled or made during our childhood. Ahmad Shukri Mohamed lectured at UiTM but decided to focus on being a full-time artist, while still taking on part-time academic work. He is also the co-founder of Matahati, a collective art group. Butterflies are one of the most amazing transformations (metamorphosis) of Nature, emerging with such beauteous colours and flying off from ugly crawly caterpillars. They help by pollinating flowers, but their beauty is also their biggest flaw. They are captured and chloroformed to preserve as cabinets of death. A work from the Butterfly Series won Ahmad Shukri Mohamed the Major Prize in the Malaysian Art Open in 1994, while Insect Diskette, still with images of the papillon, won the Juror’s Choice Award in the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards finals in 1997. The butterfly image is also used in the Target Series, Bar Code Series, Diskette Series in the 1990s, and later in his Golden Gate Series. This work has the same pedigree as those shown in Shukri’s solo exhibition, 939495969798 at Art Salon, Kuala Lumpur, in 1998.

Portraying a young boy gazing directly at the viewer, and using bright colours, Ahmad Shukri insightfully conveys the child's innocent nature. The face of the child is executed with lively brushwork and shows the artist's skill in rendering human forms with the use of strong contrasts of light and dark, dramatic lighting and a colourful palette. This mixed media on canvas illustrates a curious subject matter, where a curtain of the rainforest is adorned with an ‘insectopia' of flies and bugs displayed in a symmetrical grid like composition as though collected, chloroformed and mounted on a board.Alternating between the background and fore, we see a cluster of fauna encircled within earthy tones while a construction of colourful unnatural blocks interrupts our perception of an organic world. Layering subtle references to urbanisation, the artist brings our attention to how every bee, every bug, every insect is a vital component in the natural world orders, highlighting man's interference over nature and its precedence. Shukri intends to stress on the impatience over the actions that mankind has been incurring to Mother Nature. Graduated from UiTM (Universiti Teknologi MARA), Ahmad Shukri Mohamed won numerous awards from the prestigious Philip Morris Asean Art Awards and was artist in residence at Rimbun Dahan, Selangor from 2002 to 2003. A butterfly is perched on an unmoving man's fingertips. He receives a call, presumably a request to release the butterfly. Nature has its own ways of self-destructing, healing and renewal that any human intervention in re-engineering the disparate equations is counter productive. Vast tracts of land, especially verdant acres, have been cleared, for human habitation, a veritable human jungle filled with the daily detritus of sewage and refuse. Areas demarcated as green sanctuaries should be preserved and not degazetted for development for the sheer lucre of a few. Here in Ahmad Shukri Mohamed’s Golden Gate #27, the misty-hued forest thick with vegetation of varying greens, and with a sliver of light filtering through somewhat near the middle, is like a paradise portal hiding and protecting the floral and fauna within. Stencilled images of ‘chloroformed’ butterflies, some with torn and tattered wings all over it suggests a fragile ecosystem. This work on wildlife conservation and the environment was shown at the Golden Gate exhibition held at Pace Gallery (now Nadine Fine Art) in Petaling Jaya.Ahmad Shukri was a founding member of the Matahati art collective, which achieved cult status with the Matahati Ke Mata Dunia exhibition in Los Angeles, the United States, in 2009. The division between Man and Nature will only get more acute with globalization and more advanced technology. Man, as the super species in the hierarchy of life, the Ubermensch as it were, holds the key towards keeping the fragile ecological balance, where all the stakeholders are interdependent on one another. Division between man and nature, big or small, shown here by the symbolic printed images of strong men and horses, How things would play out is not an equation of ‘1+1=2’ but a play of variables. There is also the pertinent question of letting Nature take its course, or human intervention apparently to forestall natural calamities. Still, Man has much to do by curbing the excesses of deforestation, development encroachment, pollution, waste disposal including nuclear.Shukri graduated from the Mara Institute of Technology in 1991. In the catalogue of Ahmad Shukri Mohamed’s Golden Gate exhibition at Pace Gallery (now Nadine Fine Art), gallerist Yusof Majid, himself an artist of note, wrote: “Shukri is without doubt one of the most interesting and relevant contemporary artists in Malaysia today.” One of the founding members of the cult Matahati artist’s cooperative, Shukri has been consistently creating awareness of the environment and the balance with other living entities like insects and animals through his inimitable works. The Great Wallpaper Series, like a magical fantasy forests of James Cameron’s 2009 movie, Avatar, is part of the Golden Gate works, and it is interesting how Haji Ayman Ahwal (1940-2011) in his article, ‘Pilgrimage to the Garden’ posits Shukri’s ‘landscapist’ works in the nomenclature of the Islamic hierarchy of revelation, how man relates “his own destiny to the cosmos from the beginning of creation…” Ayman mentions that Man’s spiritual salvation lies at the conservation of Nature, and how “continued insouciance of this awareness will result in the destruction not only of man’s environment, but also of man himself.” And he quoted Sayyed Hossain Nasr: “It is nature as Allah’s primordial creation that will have the final say.”Shukri graduated from the Mara Institute of Technology in 1991. Ahmad Shukri Mohamed, a co-founder of the cult Matahati artist’s loose cooperative, has found early success since graduating with a BFA at the Universiti ITM in 1991. Still, it was not until 1998 that he struck up his first solo titled 939495969798 at Art Salon, Kuala Lumpur, showcasing his output from 1993 to 1998. Working on various media involving paitning and printmaking on crates, he had his phase of chloroformed butterflies that won him the 1st Prize in the Malaysian Artist Open at Galeri Petronas in 1994, the year he was chosen for the Asean Art Show at the Fukuoka Art Museum. Before the end of the millennium, he became the vanguard of young artists again. In 1997, he clinched the Major Award in the Malaysian Young Cntemporary Artists (BMS) competition and the Jurors Choice Award in the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards in the finals in the Philippines. He was back in the winners circle among the top 5 national winners in the Asean Art Awards in 1999.This pseudo Pop work is from his Pop Kaki Jual phase between 2003-2006 which culminated in his solo exhibition at the Nadine Fine Art, Petaling Jaya. Nadine was also the venue of his two other major solos on wildlife conservation and the environment – Warning: Tapir Crossing (2007) and Golden Gate (2012). The Pop-sy work takes up the old Boy Meets Girl ritual of testerone-pumped youth of the 1960s Pop Yeah-Yeah days but curiously from a Western perspective. A giraffe with its height advantage looks over two couples, one in swimwear and with the girl topless playing with a beach ball and the other of a well-dressed man in dark blue blazer chatting up a seated lady with hat and dress in blue, which is also the background colour. The girl in the foreground getting out of the pool with makeup in place, glances at the swimwear couple, probably reminiscing or longing to meet her own beau. In the new Millennium 3, Shukri keeps up his winning ways amidst tougher competition among the newer crops. In 2003, he was selected for the Rimbun Dahan artist’s residency and in 2013, the Echt The Netherland s international exchange residency. The years 2003 and 2004 were his Arab sojourns, first at the Sharjah Biennial and then the Emaar art symposium in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. There were also the Asian Biennale in Bangladesh in 2001 and the Asian contemporary workshop in Gazipur, Bangladesh, in 2002 besides the Brande International Workshop in Denmark in 2002. In 2005, he had his third and last solo with Art Salon, renamed XOAS Gallery, called Fitting Room. The decade was capped with the momentous major Matahati Ke Matadunia exhibition in Los Angeles with his Matahati core group in 2009. In 2014, he won the Minor Award Mural Satu Malaysia at the National Art Gallery.

This piece depicts the qualities of Ahmad Shukri Mohamed’s Wallpaper series - complex layers of images are projected onto canvas creating depth - a herd of elephants in the thick of the jungle with several Nepenthes plants hanging above the upper part of the canvas. The scoop-shaped plant is known as “monkey cups”, as little baby rainforest monkeys drink from them occasionally. They survive in the wild as death traps for large insects and even small birds, which drown in its pool of rainwater. Ahmad Shukri Mohamed is one of the founding members of the art collective Matahati which had a major exhibition Matahati Ke Matadunia in Los Angeles, United States of America in 2009. One of his iconic works of ‘chloroformed’ butterflies won him First Prize in the Malaysian Art Open at Galeri Petronas in 1994. He was trained at the Universiti Teknologi MARA graduating with a BFA in 1991, the year he won the Minor Award in the Young Contemporary Artists exhibition at the National Art Gallery. He also won the national-level Philip Morris Asean Art Awards in 1999. He was invited for prestigious exhibitions such as the Sharjah Biennial, United Arab Emirates in 2003, the Asian Art Biennale in Bangladesh in 2001 and the Asean Art Show at Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan in 1994. In 2003, he was selected for the Rimbun Dahan artist’s residency. He had his first two solo shows titled 939495969798 and Ahmad Shukri at Art Salon, Kuala Lumpur in 1998 and 2001 respectively and in 2005 when the gallery was renamed XOAS Gallery in an exhibition called Fitting Room. His other one-man shows include Boy & Girl (2002), Virus (2003), Warning: Tapir Crossing (2007) and Golden Gate (2012).
