        Dec. 05, 2021

Ronnie Mohamad (b. Johor, 1978) Nissang Series, 2018

        Est: RM19,000 - RM30,000

Artists are sometimes like visual weather-vane or detective-researchers. Here, Ronnie Mohamad, who has an inveterate soft spot for the traditional, decided to venture all the way to Terengganu from his Selangor base to seek out Pok Man, the last of the nissang makers. Nissang is a sugar paste very much like gula melaka (palm sugar) except that the raw material comes from the coconut tree. The natural sugary taste is ideal for making the Malay kuih-muih (cakes). First, one has to climb up the tree to extract the paste. Then, the ingredient is cooked in a large kuali (pan). There is obviously a demand for it, compared to the modern technologically processed sugar. Pok Man is said to have been doing it for more than 20 years, so he is a Raja Gula of sorts. As one adept at painting figures, Ronnie immortalises Pok Man on canvas, showing him scale the tree trunk with bare hands with a cylindrical container for the nissang. Self-taught and fulltime artist Ronnie Mohamad is known for his figure paintings on charcoal. An original habitue of the Conlay art colony decades ago, he has since set his trademark of contending rivals in tug-of-war struggles. His first solo, An Exploration was held at the PurpleHouz Gallery, Petaling Jaya, in 2013. Ronnie started making an impact in his 2018 solo at the National Art Gallery Malaysia.

Ronnie Mohamad has been painting since he was 17, specializing in figures using charcoal, which he finds more natural and better to express anatomy, poses, gestures, and movement. It also gives the work a raw finish. In this work of a silat exponent, the discipline of practice is reflected. This is also the spirit of how he sees a nation and its people should chart the course, with purposeful and determined structured plans. He shows the silat exponent, strike a pose that is defensive, but poised to attack with a spring. Although self-taught, Ronnie exudes the same kind of discipline in achieving a standard that is satisfactory but keeps improving. Aug. 23, 2020

Ronnie Mohamad (b. Johor, 1978) Tug Of War Series, 2014

        Est: RM25,000 - RM40,000

The tug-of-war, just like hand-wrestling, is a test of strength and strategy, the first between two equally matched contending groups and the latter between two opponents. In the tug-of-war, the game is to drag the opposing team across a halfway line. The anchor stays at the back as a stanchion against the team’s removal. Teamwork, trust and discipline are as important as brute strength to ensure superiority. Self-taught Ronnie Mohamad has established himself as one of the main proponents of figure paintings especially in charcoal since he started at the Conlay art colony some two decades ago when the prices of his works were only two-digits to now hitting five / six digits! He held his first solo, An Exploration, at the PurpleHouz Gallery in 2013, and another at the National Art Gallery Malaysia in May 2018. He got his break in 2016 when he took part in the Hong Kong Art Fair and Tourism Malaysia promoted his works in Helsinki, Finland. He was selected for the 1st Kuala Lumpur Biennale.

      • RONNIE MOHAMAD (b. 1978) BUBBLE BOY 2, 2012, Charcoal on canvas
        Apr. 29, 2018

RONNIE MOHAMAD (b. 1978) BUBBLE BOY 2, 2012, Charcoal on canvas

        Est: RM9,000 - RM15,000

Self-taught Ronnie Mohamad is known for his raw and raffish figuratives in charcoal, this in monochrome with a pale bluish-grey tint. With his son as a model, he captures the simpler times of childhood once upon a time not too long ago, even before the time of Tamagotchi and now with the games and cartoon-loaded mobile phones which have become virtual nannies to today’s children, while their parents, well, pore over their own handphones, too. What are we coming to? The old ways of a simple game of blowing bubbles in the village or park evoke fond memories, instead of the modern highly mechanized or digitized toy whatchamacallits. Ronnie Mohamad has been painting since the age of 17. His career got a shot in the arm when he took part in the Hong Kong Art Fair in 2016, the same year Tourism Malaysia promoted him in Helsinki, Finland. He had his first solo, An Exploration, at the Purplehouz Gallery, Petaling Jaya, in 2013. His works sometimes are exhibited at Segaris Art Centre, National Art Gallery Malaysia (KL Biennale), and Galeri Z (in the prestigious collection of Zain Azahari, a staunch, strong supporter / patron of art).

        Apr. 23, 2017

RONNIE MOHAMAD (b. 1978) LANGKAH PENDEKAR, 2013, Charcoal on canvas

        Est: RM18,000 - RM28,000

Ronnie Mohamad, nee Hairani Mohamad, has been painting since he was 17, specializing in figures using charcoal, which he finds more natural and better to express anatomy, poses and gestures, and movement. It also gives the work a raw finish. In this work of a silat exponent, based on someone in his 70s whom he met in Terengganu, he recalled being impressed by the old man’s shape and nimbleness, which could only come through the discipline of practice after practice. This is also the spirit of how he sees a nation and its people should chart the course, with purposeful and determined structured plans. He shows the silat exponent, keris at the waist-folds of his sarong, strike a pose that is defensive, but poised to attack with a spring. Although self-taught, Ronnie exudes the same kind of discipline in achieving a standard that is satisfactory but keeps improving. He first emerged in the solo exhibition, An Exploration, at Purplehouz Gallery, Petaling Jaya, in 2013. The year, 2016, proved a high point for him, for he got to take part in the Hong Kong Art Fair and Tourism Malaysia’s promotion in Helsinki, Finland.
