Krivatsy 8012. – Erste Ausgabe, dritte Variante (vgl. Lisney "Bibliography of British Lepidoptera", S. 7-9.). Seltenes Werk über Insekten von dem Mediziner und Naturforscher Thomas Moffet (1553-1604), "die erste vollständige Abhandlung über Insecten ... deswegen so bedeutungsvoll, weil in den Abbildungen mit zum ersten Mal Vergrößerungen durch das einfache Mikroskop abgezeichnet sind" (Hirsch-Hübotter IV, 278). Moffet verwendete Vorarbeiten von K. Gessner, E. Wotton und Th. Penny. Letzterer soll Gessners Abbildungen nach England gebracht haben. Das Werk war bereits 1590 druckfertig, wurde jedoch postum von Th. Turquet de Mayerne (1573-1655) veröffentlicht (vgl. Nissen). Der prächtige Titelholzschnitt zeigt einen Bienenkorb, umgeben von Darstellungen anderer Insekten. – Titel etwas flau im Druck, alt aufgezogen, mit ein paar braunen Flecken. Innen überwiegend sauber, nur vereinzelt leicht braunfleckig, wenige Seiten stärker gebräunt.

(Reliure de l'époque). xxxii-398 pp. Deuxième édition (l’édition originale parut en 1655, après la mort de Moffet, 1553-1604). L’ouvrage donne les noms scientifiques des légumes et fruits, l’histoire de leur usage dans les autres pays, les façons de les préparer mais aussi les bienfaits qu’ils procurent. Des bibliothèques Émile Bernard, célèbre cuisinier du roi de Prusse, avec ex-libris manuscrit ; Raymond Oliver, avec ex-libris Rouvier de Vaulgran ; et du comte Emmanuel d’André (2006, n°418). Reliure restaurée.

        Moffet (Thomas) Insectorum sive minimorum animalium theatrum, first edition, title with woodcut of a skep bee-hive surrounded by other insects (soiled, torn and defective at outer edge with slight loss to woodcuts and border, repaired and supplied in facsimile), woodcut of skep repeated at end of preliminaries (small rust-hole but not affecting image), numerous woodcut illustrations in text, old pen, ink & watercolour drawing of caterpillar with manuscript note to R2, rather soiled and stained particularly towards end, 2 final leaves of woodcuts severely stained and shaved or frayed at edges (repaired), tear to D5 repaired, a few other rust-spots, contemporary calf, rubbed and stained, rebacked, corners repaired, new endpapers, [British Bee Books 25; Hagen 553.1; Lisney 4; Nissen ZBI 2852; STC 17993a], folio, Thomas Cotes...[and] William Hope, 1634; sold not subject to return ⁂ The first book on insects published in England. Moffet was educated at Cambridge and Basel, where he obtained a degree in medicine, travelled widely in Europe before establishing a practice in Ipswich and London and serving as physician to Queen Elizabeth's forces in Normandy in 1591. The first edition has three variant imprints. It used to be said that the author's daughter, Patience, who was raised surrounded by insects and spiders, was the origin of Miss Muffet in the nursery rhyme, but this is now regarded as unlikely.

        Insects.- Moffet (Thomas) Insectorum sive Minimorum Animalium Theatrum, first edition, title with superb woodcut of a skep bee-hive surrounded by other insects, woodcut of skep repeated at end of preliminaries, numerous woodcut illustrations in text, interleaved copy, L5 with short tear to upper margin just touching text, worm hold to last 3 gatherings, more noticeable to final 2 ff., occasional browning, armorial ink stamps to title, contemporary reverse calf with arms in blind to covers, spine chipped at head, folio, [British Bee Books 25; Nissen ZBI 2852; STC 17993], folio, Thomas Cotes...[and] Benjamin Allen, 1634. ⁂ Moffet's was "the best work of its kind...it set a new standard of accuracy in the study of the invertebrates" (Garrison-Morton). He was educated at Cambridge and Basel, where he obtained a degree in medicine, travelled widely in Europe before establishing a practice in Ipswich and London and serving as physician to Queen Elizabeth's forces in Normandy in 1591.
