Attributed to Francesco Mochi (Montevarchi, Tuscany, 1580 - Rome, 1654)

      Est: €25,000 - €35,000

Attributed to Francesco Mochi (Montevarchi, Tuscany, 1580 - Rome, 1654) "Angel" Sculpted ivory figure. 43 x 36 x 20 cm. Francesco Mochi was a Tuscan sculptor and medalist who, according to "Enciclopèdia Catalana", can be considered the initiator of Italian Baroque sculpture. His most famous works can be found in Italian squares, monuments and churches, such as "Saint Veronica" (1629 - 1640), probably his most ambitious project, in the Crossing of Saint Peter’s Basilica; the equestrian monuments of "Ranuccio Farnese" and "Alessandro Farnese", both in Piazza Cavalli in Piacenza; or the "Saints Peter and Paul" in Porta del Popolo, Rome. Part of his legacy is also preserved in museums, such as his first major work, the "Annunciation" (1603), now at the Museo dell'Opera in Orvieto; or the marble bust of "Cardinal Antonio Barberini, the Younger" (c. 1629), at the Toledo Museum of Art, in Ohio.

Man kneeling (The Doubting Thomas) - Francesco Mochi (1580 Montevarchi - 1654 Rome), Rome, circa 1640

      Est: €15,000 - €18,000

Bronze, gilt. Mounted on wooden base. H. 14 cm. \"Cire perdu\" cast in original condition and very fine surface treatment. \"The omni-directional rendering of the figure, i.e. the validity of its composition from all view-points, and the fact that it maintains an exquisite balance despite the powerful spiralling movement of the garments and the frontal direction of gaze and gesture, compel us to acknowledge this bronze as a self-contained and complete conception. However, contrary to this impression, this bronze was most likely once part of a two-figure group, and as such associated with a statuette representing the resurrected Christ. The dramatic attitude of the young man should in that case be interpreted as that of the Apostle Thomas in the act of touching the wound at the side of Christ\" (Auersperg page 1). Provenance: private collection, London. Literature: Auersperg, Johannes, A Wonder-Struck Young Man. 'The Doubting Thomas', in: exhibition catalogue European Sculpture. Daniel Katz Ltd. New York, 6 May 1996 - 17 June 1996, pages 1-10.

Worsdale, "A drawing attributed to Francesco Mochi", in Burlington Magazine, vol. CXXXVII, n. 1110, 1995, pp. 616-618, fig. 46.
