      George Joji Miyasaki (1935-2013) American, Lithograph. Signed and dated "60" bottom right. Titled "Rites of Spring" bottom center. Numbered 12/12 bottom left. Depicts an abstract landscape in light shades. Overall size: 35 1/2 X 28 1/2 in. Sight size: 25 3/4 X 19 3/4 in. #1492 . George Joji Miyasaki was born in 1935 in Kalopa, Hawaii. In 1953 he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and attended California College of Arts and Crafts to study commercial art. Inspired by his teachers Richard Diebenkorn and Nathan Oliviera, he shifted focus towards abstract Expressionism. Miyasaki taught briefly at Stanford University before becoming a full professor at the University of California in 1964, teaching there for over 30 years. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1963, National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships in 1980 and 1985, and National Academy of Design Awards in 1993 and 2001. His pioneering efforts as a printmaker in the late 1950s and 60s established his place in art history, and his work is included in collections at The Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art, and San Francisco Museum of Art. He passed away in 2013 in Berkeley, California. Location BC
