TOMMY MITCHELL 1943-2013 UNTITLED, 2005 acrylic on canvas 152 x 79 cm artwork cataloguing details verso PROVENANCE Warakurna Artists, WA Cat No. 161-05 Private Collection, NT Private Collection, NSW ©Tommy Mitchell / Copyright Agency, 2024 Tommy Mitchell was born near Blackstone in Western Australia and spent his later years in Warakurna, where he became a respected senior lawman and a prominent painter in his 70s. His ancestral lands were Nganturn and Walu. Raised in the traditional way, he and his family lived off the land in the challenging conditions of the Gibson Desert. Over time, Tommy emerged as a ceremonial leader among the Ngaanyatjarra people. In addition to his painting, he was well-known for his skill in carving ceremonial weapons. Tommy's paintings beautifully capture the elemental forces of nature, intertwining the physical and ancestral aspects of the landscape. This piece depicts sacred men's Tingari sites located on his father's country. This piece is a fine example of an Australian Aboriginal artwork.

The Uncles used to go out hunting and leave the little boy behind. He was a naughty boy! He used to sneak into the Owl people's camps and steal their meat. One day the families went to see the uncles. They said "your nephew has been stealing our meat!" The Uncles asked the boy if this was true but he lied and said no, he didn't steal the meat from the Owl people. The uncles then go wild at the Owl people and a big tornado swept them away. They must have finished? One day the men went hunting and left the little boy behind again. This time the men returned with an emu. They were cutting up the emu for dinner and the greedy little boy pulled out its heart. The boy was holding the heard and blood split onto the rocks. He ran away with the heart and turned into wind.
