JJ Mitchell Mid Century Modern Abstract Oil on Board. Renowned Artist J. J. Mitchell (also signed some of his work as "Mitchell", "John J. Mitchell", J. Jerome Mitchell") (1914-1984) worked mostly in oils but dabbled in watercolor occasionally. Mitchell was born in Florida, but spent most of his life in California. He attended San Jose State, where he majored in art, came to Chouinard Art Institute on a scholarship, then went into commercial illustration and later became one of the top television and motion picture scenic set artists. However he excelled in portraiture. A prize-winner in national competitions, including 2nd Prize at the Greek Theatre All City Show, he had shown in many group exhibits but mostly in impressive one man shows in nearly every important museum in the West, including Los Angeles County Museum of Art, La Jolla Art Museum, Manhattan Galleries, San Francisco Museum of Art, Oakland Art Museum, The Emerson Gallery, The Paul Metcalf Art Galleries, Hilton Hotels in Los Angeles/Pasadena and the Frye Art Museum. The contemporary approach to multiple forms and style was a challenge, which John Mitchell enjoyed. He was one of those painters who was constantly experimenting and was very aware of current movements in the art world. Mitchell had an exceptional feeling for design and color, and did some outstanding interior murals. His intimate portraits of children are delightful. His subject matter ranged from bridge and harbor scenes to teeming metropolitan streets and buildings. A believer in art as a means of communication, Mitchell always involved the spectator in what he had to say. Though he had experimented in approach, he created a real sense of enjoyment in color and form in all he created. Beyond his broad subject matter he became fascinated with the faces and culture of Native Americans. Some of his most breath-taking work are portraits of American Indians dressed in the clothes and decoration of their heritage. Some of the Western Art he created was that of Western landscape and abstract native Americans riding on horseback. In all of this genre of his work, Mr. Mitchell claimed no credit to any particular tribe, name or geographical region, only his personal study and observation of the people and culture in general. The works of J.J. Mitchell were at one time in the collections of: Prince A-Walad Talal/Al Saoid, Saudi Arabia, Mr. & Mrs. Bing Crosby, Mrs. Norman Chandler, John Ford, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Laszlo, The Japan Steel Workers in Tokyo, Dr. & Mrs. R. Constantino, Mr. T. Brook Towen, Dr. Ray Lagger, Mr. & Mrs. Charles Falls, Mr. & Mrs. Gerhard Close, Mr. & Mrs. William Wilson, Mr. & Mrs. Paul Metcalf, Mr. & Mrs. James and countless others....
