Renowned Artist J. J. Mitchell (also signed some of his work as "Mitchell", "John J. Mitchell", J. Jerome Mitchell") (1914-1984) worked mostly in oils but dabbled in watercolor occasionally. Mitchell was born in Florida, but spent most of his life in California. He attended San Jose State, where he majored in art, came to Chouinard Art Institute on a scholarship, then went into commercial illustration and later became one of the top television and motion picture scenic set artists. However he excelled in portraiture.
