        John Mitchell (1791 - 1852 ) after David Wilkie (1785 - 1841 ): The errand boy, c. 1850, Steel engraving Technique: Steel engraving on Paper Inscription: To the left of them, a boy on horseback has just arrived, whom the title identifies as a messenger boy. The content of his message, however, remains uncertain for the viewer. Date: c. 1850 Description: Inscribed below the depiction "Painted by Sir William Wilkie R.A./Engraved by J. Mitchell". In a courtyard of a peasant house four figures are visible in the foreground. An elderly woman, next to her another woman and a young girl are standing in front of the entrance to the homestead. The paper is rubbed in the area of the upper margin, the corners are bumped. The lower corners of the sheet are damaged, the margin is rubbed there. Small tear on the left margin.
