      4 Maps of South American Countries from Burr: This hand-colored map is from David H. Burr's A New Universal Atlas; comprising separate maps of all the principal empires, kingdoms & states throughout the world: and forming a distinct atlas of the United States ... a new edition revised and corrected to the present time. The work was published in New York in 1836 by William Hall & Co. The maps from the work were engraved by Thomas Illman and Edward Pillbrow. David H. Burr (1803-1875) was one of the greatest early American mapmakers. He was born in Connecticut and began his career leading road surveys in southern New York. In 1829, he was responsible for revising Simeon De Witt's map of New York State from 1804. He also served as the topographer for the United States Post Office Department. Provenance: Julia H. Alexander (pencilled signature) to original bookend. One Chart of the Lengths of Rivers and Heights of Mountains from Mitchell: This hand-colored map is from Samuel Augustus Mitchell's A New Universal Atlas Containing Maps of the various Empires, Kingdoms, States and Republics of the World. With a special map of each of the United States, Plans of Cities &c. The work was published in Philadelphy by the Author in 1846. Samuel Augustus Mitchell (1792-1868) and his sons were leading map publishers in the United States in the 19th century. Mitchell moved to Philadelphia c1830 in the hopes to improve geography textbooks and American cartographical information. He acquired the rights to Tanner's New Universal Atlas (first published in 1836), and issued his first printing of the work in 1846.
