Joan Miró Sold at Auction Prices

Figure painter, Painter, Sculptor, Illustrator, Draft draughtsman, b. 1893 - d. 1983

Spanish artist Joan Miró was one of modern art's pioneers. His search for non-objectivity led him to sorties into Fauvism, Surrealism, and Cubism, as he refused to restrict his work to one style or medium. Miró geared all of his work toward breaking with the traditional, whether in his paintings, ceramic pieces, bronze sculptures, or prints. One hallmark of Joan Miró paintings is the mixing of precisely rendered imaginary objects along with commonplace objects. Joan Miró's prints were, like his paintings, experiments in breaking the conventions of art. While many of his works had a common theme, Miró refused to limit himself in his representation of images. Rather than creating art that totally abstracted reality, Miró pointed the way toward non-representational works. Many artists can trace their inspiration back to Joan Miró paintings. Initially studying business, he turned to art after a nervous breakdown and enrolled at La Llotja art academy. His first solo show in 1918 was met with ridicule, leading to depression. Inspired by Fauvism and Cubism, he moved to Paris in 1920, where his style evolved into a more personal form of Surrealism, joining the movement in 1924. He married Pilar Juncosa in 1929 and had a daughter the following year. Miró's work gained international recognition through Pierre Matisse's New York gallery. During the Spanish Civil War, his art became politically charged, and he relocated to Normandy in 1939, later escaping to Spain. Post-war, he focused on themes of women, birds, and the moon. Miró became known for his sculptures and ceramics, including a 1964 series for the Maeght Foundation and a 1974 tapestry for the World Trade Center. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Barcelona in 1979 and passed away on December 25th, 1983. His legacy in Modern art, particularly on mental illness and creativity, remains influential.

He grew up in the Barri Gòtic neighborhood of Barcelona, Spain, the son of a goldsmith and watchmaker, Miquel Miró Adzerias. He began drawing classes at the age of seven, and although his father saw art simply as a hobby compared to the lucrative crafts field Miró enrolled at the fine art academy at La Llotja in 1907. Miró initially went to business school as well as art school, working as a clerk when he was a teenager, although he abandoned the business world completely for art after suffering his first nervous breakdown. He studied at the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc and had his first solo show in 1918 at the Galeries Dalmau, where his work was ridiculed and defaced, causing bouts of depression that would plague him all his life. Inspired by Fauve and Cubist exhibitions in Barcelona Miró moved to the arts community in Montparnasse, Paris in 1920, although he continued to spend summers in Catalonia. His early art was inspired by Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne, with his works in Paris showing a transition to a more individual style of painting. After Miró’s first Parisian solo exhibition at Galerie la Licorne in 1921 he was invited to join the Surrealist group in 1924, where the symbolic and cluttered chaotic lack of focus that had defined his work thus far began to diminish. He experimented with collage and the process of painting within his work so as to reject the framing that traditional painting provided. In 1926 he collaborated with Max Ernst on designs for ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev. Miró married Pilar Juncosa in Palma (Majorca) on October 12th, 1929, and they had a daughter, María Dolores Miró, the following year. When Pierre Matisse opened an art gallery in New York City in 1931 it became an influential part of the Modern art movement in America, and represented Miró from the outset, introducing his work to the United States market. He was unable to visit Spain during the Spanish Civil War, and it was not until the Republican government commissioned him to paint a mural for the 1937 Paris Exhibition that Miró’s work began to take on politically charged meanings. In 1939 Miró relocated to Varengeville in Normandy in fear of Germany’s impending invasion of France, then narrowly escaped to Spain for the duration of the War. Features of his work during the War show a shifting focus to the subjects of women, birds, and the moon, which would dominate his iconography for much of the rest of his career. After the War Miró lived in Barcelona and made frequent visits to Paris to work on printing techniques at the Atelier Lacourière. He developed a close relationship with the printer Fernand Mourlot, producing over one thousand different lithographic editions of his work. Miró created a series of sculptures and ceramics for the garden of the Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France in 1964, as well as a tapestry for the World Trade Center in 1974 that was one of the most valuable pieces lost during the September 11th Attacks. In 1979 Miró received an honorary doctorate from the University of Barcelona, and he died from heart failure on December 25th, 1983. His work is highly sought after by collectors, and his influences on Modern art, as well as on discussions about the role mental illness plays in art and creativity, are almost unparalleled.

JOAN MIRÓ I FERRÀ (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma de Mallorca, 1983). "Atmosphere", 1959. Lithograph, copy H.C. Signed and justified in pencil. Work referenced in Mourlot 258. Measurements: 32, 5 x 25 cm; 52 x 43 cm (frame). Lithograph by Joan Miró made in 1959, in which his unmistakable style can be observed. Miró often sought to capture the dynamism of shapes and colors in an atmosphere of fantasy and dreams. This work, with its apparent simplicity and symbolic charge, invites the viewer to enter a personal world full of associations between the cosmos, nature and human emotions. Stellar and anthropomorphic forms combine the human with the cosmic, while the primary colors transmit direct, pure sensations. Joan Miró was trained in Barcelona, between the Escuela de la Lonja and the Galí Academy. Already in the early date of 1918 he made his first exhibition, in the Dalmau Galleries in Barcelona. In 1920 he moved to Paris and met Picasso, Raynal, Max Jacob, Tzara and the Dadaists. There, under the influence of surrealist poets and painters, he matures his style; he tries to transpose surrealist poetry to the visual, based on memory, fantasy and the irrational. From this moment on, his style began an evolution that led him to more ethereal works, in which organic forms and figures were reduced to abstract dots, lines and spots of color. In 1924 he signed the first surrealist manifesto, although the evolution of his work, too complex, does not allow him to be ascribed to any particular orthodoxy. His third exhibition in Paris, in 1928, was his first great triumph: the Museum of Modern Art in New York acquired two of his works. He returned to Spain in 1941, and that same year the museum dedicated a retrospective to him that would be his definitive international consecration. During the fifties he experimented with other artistic media, such as engraving, lithography and ceramics. From 1956 until his death in 1983, he lived in Palma de Mallorca in a sort of internal exile, while his international fame grew. Throughout his life he received numerous awards, such as the Grand Prizes at the Venice Biennale in 1954 and the Guggenheim Foundation in 1959, the Carnegie Prize for Painting in 1966, the Gold Medals of the Generalitat de Catalunya (1978) and of the Fine Arts (1980), and was named Doctor Honoris Causa by the universities of Harvard and Barcelona. Today his work can be seen at the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona, inaugurated in 1975, as well as in major contemporary art museums around the world, such as the Thyssen-Bornemisza, the MoMA in New York, the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, the National Gallery in Washington, the MNAM in Paris and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo.

JOAN MIRÓ I FERRÀ (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma de Mallorca, 1983). "Manoletina" 1969. Etching and aquatint on paper, copy 70/75. Signed and justified by hand. Maeght editeur, Paris. Measurements: 69,5 x 104 cm; 102,5 x 137,5 cm (frame). Created in 1969, this etching and carborundum aquatint was published by Maeght editeur, Paris. Eyes, birds and stars are integrated in a composition that seems to be in continuous movement thanks to the fluidity of the figures, which seem to perform an intricate dance before our eyes. The free and pseudo-abstract forms are combined with the use of vibrant colors and thick black strokes that seem to be the result of the use of the surrealist technique of the automatic stroke. Joan Miró was trained in Barcelona, and made his individual debut in 1918, in the Dalmau Galleries. In 1920 he moved to Paris and met Picasso, Raynal, Max Jacob, Tzara and the Dadaists. He returned to Spain in 1941, and that same year the museum dedicated a retrospective to him that would be his definitive international consecration. Throughout his life he received numerous awards, such as the Grand Prizes of the Venice Biennale and the Guggenheim Foundation, the Carnegie Prize for Painting, the Gold Medals of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Fine Arts, and was named Doctor Honoris Causa by the universities of Harvard and Barcelona. JOAN MIRÓ I FERRÀ (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma de Mallorca, 1983). Untitled. 2/IV/1977. 3 original drawings, gift from Miró to his engraver Joan Barbarà. Crayons and pencils on paper. Attached certificate from Joan Barbarà. Barbarà worked with Miró on many of his most important graphic works, becoming a key ally in experimenting with printmaking techniques. These drawings can be seen as an expression of gratitude and friendship, captured in the artist's characteristic visual language. The date is significant because in the 1970s Miró was in the midst of experimenting with graphic media. His collaboration with Joan Barbarà was prolific and crucial in this exploration. In the three drawings, Miró explores the essence of form and color, working with an economy of elements to convey universal ideas and emotions: with the black dots he evoked both stars and eyes and points of connection, the arcs are linking gestures, the red triangles express tension and dynamic energy. Joan Miró was trained in Barcelona, between the Escuela de la Lonja and the Academia Galí. Throughout his life he received numerous awards, such as the Grand Prizes of the Venice Biennale in 1954 and the Guggenheim Foundation in 1959, the Carnegie Prize for Painting in 1966, the Gold Medals of the Generalitat de Catalunya (1978) and the Fine Arts (1980), and was named Doctor Honoris Causa by the universities of Harvard and Barcelona.

"Le contre balancée", 1975. Etching and aquatint, copy 50/50. Signed and justified in pencil. Publisher: Maeght, Paris. Measurements: 115 x 74 cm (print); 138,5 x 96 cm (paper). Miró frequently used the image of the eye in his works as a symbol that could represent inner vision, perception and observation of the world from a surrealist perspective. In this print he plays with the double and ambivalent image of an eye that is also a fish floating in space. The almond shape in thick black strokes is accompanied by the painter's characteristic red and blue. As in so many other works, in this composition Miró refers us to a primordial connection with nature, and more specifically with the marine world as a transcript of the psyche and immersion in the dream world. Joan Miró was trained in Barcelona, and made his individual debut in 1918, in the Dalmau Galleries. In 1920 he moved to Paris and met Picasso, Raynal, Max Jacob, Tzara and the Dadaists. There, under the influence of surrealist poets and painters, he matures his style; he tries to transpose surrealist poetry to the visual, based on memory, fantasy and the irrational.
