BIOGRAPHY: Francesc Miralles i Galaup (6 April 1848, Valencia - 30 October 1901, Barcelona) was a Spanish painter, best known for his realistic scenes of bourgeois life and high society. His family was involved in several businesses enterprises. When he was five, they sold some of their interests and relocated to Barcelona. In 1855, he was enrolled at the new Collegi Maristes Valldemia in Mataro, a private Catholic school. While there, he began to scribble drawings in his notebooks and became convinced that he should be an artist. His parents, naturally, wanted him to continue with the family business. After seeing him in his father's office, drawing pictures on the ledgers and paperwork, they relented and, in 1862, found him a place in the studios of Ramon Marti Alsina, where he studied for several years. He soon displayed an interest in figure painting, as opposed to his teacher's favored landscapes. When he turned eighteen, he received parental permission (and financial support) to study in Paris, where he would remain until 1893, with occasional visits home. During his first years there, he copied masterworks at the Louvre and may have worked briefly with Alexandre Cabanel. He eventually had several small studios in Montmartre and on the Rue Laffitte. He exhibited regularly at the Salon and the Sala Pares, back home in Barcelona. He also became a client of the well-known art dealership Goupil & Cie, attracting wealthy buyers throughout Europe and America. This was a relief to his family, who had initially been concerned that they might have to support him indefinitely. Their ability to do so had been compromised as they had lost much of their fortune in the Panic of 1866 and were losing more of it as they paid off their debts. In fact, they eventually moved to Paris so he could help support them.He suffered from chronic bronchitis so, after his parents had died (within a year of each other), he decided to return to Barcelona, seeking a milder climate. His sister Carmen had already returned there years before, after her marriage, so he had no relatives left in Paris. Rumors, however, suggested that his real reason for leaving was that his paintings were going out of style. Whatever the reason, he arrived in Barcelona in 1893 and his home soon became a gathering place for the creative community. He continued to exhibit at the Salon in Paris, but never repeated his earlier successes. To help him re-establish himself, his brother-in-law, Salvador Andreu (a wealthy manufacturer and philanthropist), obtained a commission for him to decorate the ceiling of a new private concert hall at the Liceu. He had never truly gotten over the loss of his mother. By 1898, Carmen had become seriously concerned about his increasing isolation and worsening health. Salvador agreed that something should be done, so he persuaded Miralles to live in "The Towers", a small house next to theirs where he would have more company, but his health continued to decline. One day, they came to visit and found him lying in front of his easel, dead from an apparent heart attack.

FRANCISCO MIRALLES GALUP (Valencia, 1848 - Barcelona, 1901). "On the bank of the river", 1887. Oil on panel. It has slight flaws in the pictorial surface. It has a restoration label on the back. Signed and dated in the lower right area. Measurements: 45 x 32, 5 cm; 64 x 56 cm (frame). The present work shows a landscape dominated by the presence of a young lady dressed in a pink dress, whose tonality brings luminosity and dynamism to the scene, concentrating the light in the central area of the composition. Compositionally the treatment of this portrait is revealed in a bold way, as if the author was capturing a specific moment of reality, as he deviates the frontality, so that the viewer observes the scene as if he were on the same path that the protagonist walks. Francisco Miralles was trained in Barcelona in the workshop of Ramón Martí Alsina, where he was a fellow disciple of the members of the first generation of Catalan realists. Provenance: Adriaan Beukenkamp, Harlaam, Netherlands, ca. 1935; Janna G. Beukenkamp Niemhuys (by descent from the above, her father), Southfield, Connecticut, ca. 1953 Thence by descent to the previous owner, 2001; Sotheby's New York: Friday, April 18, 2008 - $121,000. Exhibited: Hartford, Connecticut, Wadsworth Atheneum, Masterworks from Private Connecticut Collections, October 1993-January 1994, illustrated p. 10. Francisco Miralles Y Galup was born in the coastal city of Valencia, Spain, and studied under Ramon Marti y Alsina in Barcelona. After attending the Beaux Arts in Madrid, he and his family moved to Paris. Miralles would reside in the city for the next 27 years. In France, Miralles studied under Arturo Canela, whose residence became the meeting place for Catalán artists in the city. Fortuitously, his fellow countryman Eduardo Zamacois introduced him to the prestigious art dealer, Adolphe Goupil, the agent for Boldini, Bouguereau, and Gérôme. Goupil commissioned numerous works from Miralles and steered him towards the subjects of elegant society for which he became best known. Indeed, in large part due to Goupil’s influence, Miralles began to look fre- quently to the bourgeoisie of the Second Empire for inspiration, and from that group, he often chose to paint fashionable young ladies. In short order, Miralles’ talents as a painter became wide- ly appreciated, and his work avidly collected. He became a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salons, in the Sala Parés in Barcelona and at numerous international exhibitions in London, Berlin and the United States. In The Upcoming Storm on the Bois de Boulogne, Miralles depicts the moments before a storm unfolds on the famous Parisian park. Though already in existence, Napoleon commissioned Baron Haussman to landscape the Bois de Boulogne in 1852. The park quickly became the primary site of public spectacle in late nineteenth-century Paris - even supplanting the grand boulevards. An expansive public park located on the western edge of the 16th arrondissement in Paris, it is more than twice as large as Central Park in New York and over three times the size of Hyde Park in London. By the time of its completion, it boasted two artificial lakes connected by a waterfall, 22 miles of footpaths, 18 miles of riding paths, fine restaurants, a photography studio, the famous Longchamp Racecourse, steam-powered rail access, and a skating rink in the winter. For the Universelle Exposition in 1867, a group of French writers created a guidebook for Paris, stating “the Bois de Boulogne is the promenade of Europe,” and the Champs-Elysées is “today no more than a grandiose and charming passage leading to the Bois du Boulogne” (as quoted in Greg M. Thomas, “Women in Public in the Parks of Paris,” The Invisible Flâneuse? Gender, Public Space, and Visual Culture in Nineteenth-Century Paris, 2006, p. 41). Miralles’ composition of the Bois de Boulogne is a graceful portrayal of Second Empire France. Adopting a striking painterly style, the Spanish painter depicts a group of handsomely dressed male and female, bourgeois Parisians. Though the lawn is a quite vibrant green, its tone is dulled by the appearance of a rainy sky above. As a result of the weather, the group of ladies and a small child with a doll in her hand grip to their parasols. An intrigued flâneur, armed with a cane but not an umbrella, observes the dynamic women from the right-side of the composition. Like the audience, he is thoroughly enraptured by the beauty and grace of the extraordinary creatures to his left.

FRANCESC MIRALLES I GALAUP (Valencia, 1848 - Barcelona, 1901). "Two Friends in the Forest". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 40 x 32 cm; 54 x 45 cm (frame). In a forest clearing, two elegantly dressed friends exchange confidences. One of them, sitting on the grass, rests her arm on the lap of her friend, whose face is partially veiled by the straw hat. This painting is a magnificent example of Miralles's language, which focused mainly on genre scenes of bourgeois life and fin-de-siècle high society. The refined treatment of the canvases is combined with a marked atmospheric sensibility, so that the detailed brushstroke for the clothing is combined with a skilful ability to extract the dense woodland qualities. Francesc Miralles trained in Barcelona in the studio of Ramón Martí Alsina, where he was a fellow disciple of the first generation of Catalan realists. Little remains of Miralles's output from this early period, although the dozen or so paintings we have tell us that he was a young painter who quickly learned to treat the figure with mastery, although he was not yet interested in landscape painting. Settled in Paris from the mid-1860s (around 1865-66), it is possible that he studied with Courbet on the advice of Martí Alsina, who also trained with the French master. Due to these influences, his youthful style, up to the late 1970s, is still vigorously realist. Later he evolved towards a style of feminine elegance, typically fin-de-siècle, with a Fortunyist-influenced technique. In Paris he popularised a refined style, centred mainly on costumbrist themes of bourgeois life and high society, mainly featuring female characters. In Paris Miralles lived a free and carefree life, at first depending financially on his family, and later supporting himself by his own means, thanks to the sales of his paintings through the most prominent Paris dealer of the time, Goupil. At the same time, he took part in the Salon des Artistes Français between 1875 and 1896. He made several trips to Barcelona, and in fact exhibited from 1877 at the Sala Parés in that city. After several years spent between Paris and Barcelona, he returned to Barcelona for good in 1893. Francisco Miralles is represented in the MACBA, the Abbey of Montserrat and the Círculo del Liceo in Barcelona, as well as in important private collections.

FRANCESC MIRALLES I GALAUP (Valencia, 1848 - Barcelona, 1901). "Young Woman Lying on the Grass".1881. Watercolour on paper. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. Size: 24 x 43 cm; 40 x 50 cm (frame). Francesc Miralles trained in Barcelona in the workshop of Ramón Martí Alsina, where he was a fellow disciple of the members of the first generation of Catalan realists. In Paris Miralles lived a free and carefree life, at first depending financially on his family, and later supporting himself by his own means, thanks to the sales of his paintings through the most prominent dealer in Paris at the time, Goupil.

"The Accident". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Size: 37 x 45 cm; 49 x 58 cm (frame). A carriage, in whose command is an elegant lady, tries to contain the advance of her horses before the sudden fall of a young washerwoman to the ground. It is an image of great expressive power, which only a brilliant painter can resolve as Francesc Miralles does, freezing the gestures and expressions at the height of the tension, as a photographic snapshot would do. The young woman, whose freshly washed clothes have been scattered on the floor, is attended to by a groom. The galloping legs almost graze the girl. In the background, other riders are still engrossed in their rides. They ignore the drama condensed in the foreground. Compositional boldness, atmospheric sensitivity and rapid brushstrokes combine in this oil painting.

FRANCESC MIRALLES I GALAUP (Valencia, 1848 - Barcelona, 1901). "Jumping over a skipping rope". Oil on wood. Signed in the lower left corner. Size: 27 x 50 cm; 39 x 63 cm (frame). This painting is a magnificent example of Miralles's language, centred mainly on costumbrista themes of bourgeois life and the fin-de-siècle high society: a bourgeois costumbrista scene, captured with an elegant style and marked atmospheric sensitivity, with a descriptive brushstroke in the textures and loose in the backgrounds, expressive and exuberant. Thus, we see a refined treatment of the environment that surrounds him, of the bourgeoisie with whom he lives, in a work marked by the precious treatment of the material, the gracefulness of his drawing and the delicacy of his lighting. Francisco Miralles trained in Barcelona in the studio of Ramón Martí Alsina, where he was a fellow pupil of the members of the first generation of Catalan realists. In Paris Miralles lived a free and carefree life, at first depending financially on his family, and later supporting himself by his own means, thanks to the sales of his paintings through the most prominent dealer in Paris at the time, Goupil.
