Original Vintage Campari Soda Poster by Giovanni Mingozzi 1950 Italian Cocktail

      Est: $1,200 - $1,800

The award-winning and innovative design of Campari Soda's packaging is the star of this midcentury Italian poster. Its iconic bottle shape was designed by Italian Futurist Fortunato Depero, who inverted the shape of the glass used to drink the beverage into the shape of the bottle - a simple, yet groundbreaking innovation. Here, the bottle and glass are placed one in front of the other, further illustrating how they are a marriage of opposites. The bottle's design is further mimicked in the gray border. Gaspar Campari first produced Bitter Campari in 1860 in Novara, Italy. The liquor falls under the category of "Bitters," which is traditionally prepared as a mixture of water, alcohol, and botanical extracts - in this case, orange peel. Bitters were originally developed as patent medicines, but are now used as digestifs. The drink is colored with carmine dye that provides the unique red coloring. Campari Soda was developed in the 1920s and was first referred to as an "Americano", after the American tourists visiting Italy to avoid Prohibition at home. In 1932 it was bottled and sold as the world's first ever packaged cocktail and renamed "Campari Soda". Giovanni Mingozzi (1891 - 1975) was an Italian graphic designer and poster artist who worked within the modernist movement. He spent his career based in Bologna, where he founded his own studio and worked with local brands such as Barbisio hats. His posters often feature clean lines and sparse layouts, usually with a touch of charm and humor. This is an Original Vintage Poster. It is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

GIOVANNI MINGOZZI (1891-?). CAMPARI SODA. 1950. 38¼x26 inches, 97x66 cm. Studio Mingozzi, Bologna.

      Est: $1,000 - $1,500

GIOVANNI MINGOZZI (1891-?) CAMPARI SODA. 1950. 38 1/4x26 inches, 97x66 cm. Studio Mingozzi, Bologna. Condition A: minor creases at edges. Mingozzi spent his entire life and career in Bologna, where he founded the Alta Studio in the 1920s and then opened an eponymously-named studio in the 1930s. His posters uniformly reflected his Modernist view of design. Among his largest clients were Barbisio hats, Ebano shoe polish and a variety of different brands of liquor, including Campari. This strong image from later in his career promotes the company's soda with its stylized, signature bottle. The image manages to both represent the bottle as an inverted cocktail glass and catch the viewer's eye with the vibrating background.

      Jul. 20, 2021

      Barbisio. 1938.

      Est: $5,000 - $6,000

ARTIST: GIOVANNI MINGOZZI (1891-?) SIZE: 34 7/8 x 49 7/8 in./88.8 x 126.7 cm PRINTER: Litografie Artistiche Faentine DESCRIPTION: Barbisio hats have been produced in the Biella Valley since 1862, but there’s nothing traditional about this design—in fact, it still feels sharply contemporary today. The exclamation points—outfitted with felt hats, canes, and a boutonniere—appear as though they might just dance right out of the frame with jazzy bravado. This particular version of the design advertises availability at a Lucerne dealer. Mingozzi was an active Bolognese designer who ran his own studio as well as an advertising agency named Alta. Rare! POSTER: GIOVANNI MINGOZZI (1891- ?) BARBISIO.

      Est: $5,000 - $7,500

GIOVANNI MINGOZZI (1891- ?) BARBISIO. 1938. 77 3/4x55 inches. Gros-Monti, Turin. Condition B+: repaired tears and restoration in image. Two sheets. Mingozzi was a prolific poster designer in Bologna, where he ran an eponymous studio and opened a successful advertising agency called Alta. In the 1930s one of his clients was the elegant haberdasher, Barbisio. In this emphatic image Mingozzi creates a modish Art Deco allegory, turning a man''s body into a geometrical exclamation point, with a detailed rendering of hat serving as a secondary point. The suggestion of a cane and a boutonniere add an entrancing element to the overall design and ultimate effect of the image. The exclamation point appears in other posters by the artist promoting the same company, but never in as original a fashion as this one. Bolaffi p. 150 (var).
