In this painting there is a strong sense of reflection, meditation, and respect. Focusing on two figures in an open space, this intimate watercolour on paper has a feeling of a meditative stillness and gratitude surrounding the daily lives of the people. Chang Fee Ming is an accomplished watercolourist known for his unique renditions and interpretations of peoples, traditional societies and cultures. He goes deep into the interiors, to the heart of isolated, marginalised traditional communities, to the off-the-beaten track areas in Indonesia, Africa, Myanmar, Cambodia, Nepal and even tracing the mighty Mekong right up to its source in Tibet - with the zeal of an anthropologist, the insight of a social scientist and above all, the great spirit of an artist. Since his first foray to Bali in 1985, he has etched his place in Indonesian art history, especially in Bali.

Fee Ming’s envelopes and postcards allude to a variety of practices and customs. First day covers are maybe the most obvious, but these works are a subversion of them. They undermine the idealised nationhood paradigm. It would be a mistake to see and understand these works merely as drawings or studies, and to rate them solely on line or paint quality. Aesthetics is only one of several layers. These works have become documents with various narratives as a result of the method by which they were conceived and created. They are personal and geographical travel documents about the art of journeying and travelling. Observing and transforming information and experience. Of location and country, past and present, transitory and permanent.

In many of Chang’s works, the faces of his subjects are not seen. Rather, in beautiful, serene compositions he focuses with telling details. In this instance, it’s a vendor with weathered hands clad in yellow-hued sarong and a turquoise top selling red chillies and bananas. From Chang’s artistic perspective, the audience can have more space to think or feel after viewing the painting from a pair of hands or feet. This is unlike a painting with faces, where the audience will tend to seek to more or less know from the expression of the people in the painting.

Fee Ming is best remembered for his epic Mekong painting odyssey, a great art-thropology insight tracing life around the great river across six countries up to its source in the plateaus of Tibet.

An inspiring trip to Bali allowed the artist to gain insight into Balinese culture and rich heritage. This painting illustrates graceful rhythmic movements of dancers wearing ceremonial attire rendered in spontaneous lines overlapped with translucent strokes produced by dabbing on watercolours. Est: RM13,000 - RM26,000

The artwork encapsulating a way of life along the great Mekong at its richest biodiversity in the Vietnamese delta point is well painted. In one, the hardy Vietnamese workers in the traditional Non La conical hats huddled and working in tandem, and in the other fishermen sorting out their catches onshore in a microcosm of archaic fishing. Fee Ming spent some seven years traversing land, life and communities along the Mekong, the 12th longest in the world wending across six countries, and the sequel, Mekong Exploring The Source, from Weixi, Dali and Xishuangbanna in China down to Cuu Long, or Nine Dragons Delta in Vietnam. The countries covered were China, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. The years 1984-1985 launched Chang Fee Ming as a major watercolourist when he won the coveted Asean Gold Award in the Sime Darby Art Asia competition (1985), the 1st Prize in the PNB Malaysia Art Competition (1985), and the Malaysian Watercolour Society Awards in 1984 and again in 1985. He also won the Minor Awards in the prestigious national Young Contemporaries (Bakat Muda Sezaman) in 1986 and again in 1987. Est: RM130,000 - RM230,000

For two consecutive years in 1986 and 1987, Chang Fee Ming departed from his usual watercolour métier of exotic Asian and African places, to produce stunning works that won the coveted Minor Awards of the Young Contemporary Artists (Bakat Muda Sezaman, BMS) both times. The winning 1986 mixed media work, Chord Of Friendship, is a double-edge weapon with undercurrents of tension using 16 innocuous newspaper clip excerpts of peace and rapprochement. As the Latin adage goes, Si vis pacem, para bellum (If you want peace, prepare for war). The work of newspaper, fishing net, strings, hooks and wood fits the theme of International Year of Peace. The taut tug of strings from the weaver’s shuttles suggest an ever-present tension, while the irony of the shuttles’ shape of pen nibs symbolically used to ink peace looking like missiles is not lost. Friendship among nations is not a permanent thing and this is borne out by the effects of globalization from an erstwhile bipolar world of the Cold War in the second half of the 20th century. The main pictures are taken from newsclippings of then prime minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s 1985 visit to China, following up on the epochal 1974 visit by then prime minister Tun Abdul Razak. This work was re-shown at the Imbas Kembali BMS in 1999. An extraordinary artist working mainly in watercolours, the wanderlust Chang Fee Ming has a string of accolades that inscribes his pre-eminence: the Sime Darby Art Asia Award (Gold / Overall Asean Prize, 1985); the Malaysian Watercolour Society Award in 1984 and 1985); the PNB Malaysian Art Competition (1st Prize, 1985) He also received Awards of Distinction from the Rockport Publishers USA (1997) and Dom Perignon Malaysia (1999), and was a co-winner (Malaysia) of the Winsor & Newton World Millennium Competition in 1999. In the Larasati Jan 26, 2013 auction in Singapore, his seminal work, Mandalay from the 1995 Road to Mandalay exhibition in Jakarta, Indonesia, sold for a premium of S$103,700 (RM255,924) – a record for a watercolour in Southeast Asia.

          Est: RM100,000 - RM180,000

Two women squatting and huddled in the limited shade of a boat parked on the beachfront, making a transaction over small fishes (in basket). There’s not much to be made by the itinerant vendor from selling small fishes, in the hot sun, and it’s probably a luxury for the other party to be able to afford to buy. Only the rainbow- strip patterns of the boat, though straited, offers a colourful respite to the scene. Such is the industry and enterprise of the Kelantan womenfolk that they can be seen in the padi-fields, in the open wet market and on the sea shore, helping out net-mending, making fish crackers (keropok) and dried anchovies or carrying the haul or fishing gear back. No stereotype gender roles in the kitchen for them, although they would be firing up the stoves, to cook food for the family. Still, with modern marketing, sorting and distribution under the LKIM (Lembaga Kemajuan Ikan Malaysia), these women may be rendered obsolete, but you can’t easily put these matriarchs down or out. Chang Fee Ming has produced some of the most spectacular watercolour tomes tracing the Mekong, on Bali, East Africa and the Malaysian East Coast, among other places. He had twice won the Malaysian Watercolour Society award (1984 and 1985) and the Bakat Muda Sezaman Minor Awards (1986 and 1987) besides 1st Prize in the PNB competition (1985). His biggest prize was the Gold and Overall Asean Prize in the Sime Darby Art Asia Competition in 1985. The ginger plant, as are many others in tropical Asian botany, has always fascinated Chang Fee Ming, for the colours, shape, intricacies and efficacy of its purported medicinal qualities. Painting flowers and plants is also a distraction from his other alfresco expressions of rural life and people, the Man-Nature symbiosis in life sustenance and cultural tradition. This ginger plant work shown at the Exotic Tropicals exhibition at Galeri Citra, Kuala Lumpur, way back in 1994, is not only a study of spices and folk medicine but also a way of depicting the bloom, a solitary efflorescence, amidst a vegetation of green, using the watercolour medium. Chang Fee Ming is one of the most accomplished artists dedicated to watercolours, pushing the parameters of expression and techniques. His string of accolades include Sime Darby Art Asia Award (Gold / Overall Asean Prize, 1985), Malaysian Watercolour Society Award (1984 and 1985), PNB Malaysian Art Competition (1st Prize, 1985); and the Malaysian Young Contemporaries Award (Minor, 1986 and 1987). The expressions of the children are well captured: one is eagerly anticipating the Beijing Olympics which will be held in 2008, one is missing home. So contrasting are the two boys in warm clothings in different pictures, one in blue with red chest covers and the other in just red sweater buttoned up to the neck. The cold rarefied heights are suggested by the peaks in the back. This is a double portrait offer from the sketchbook of Chang Fee Ming in his peregrination traversing along the mighty Mekong. The fluttering of colourful transparent flags inscribed with Tibetan incantations and reflecting the rarefied landscapes are a soothing prayer of life, the beginning and the end. Most inspiring is the flickers of abstract highlights and patterns created by the changing seasons, filling the work with a monumental and magical ring. This masterpiece is part of Chang Fee Ming’s epic three-year Mekong Exploring The Source art-chaelogy expedition spanning Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet in China and all over South-east Asia. The magnum opus was exhibited in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Beijing. The tingling of bells mixed with the chanting of the lama monks serve as a leit motif in this enchanting mystical land. The work tells about the affinity of the Tibetans with Nature, and the optimism of life and its vagaries. Chang Fee Ming is one of the best known artists working in watercolours, and his wanderlust has taken him first to Bali and then the rest of Indonesia, Nepal, Cambodia, the African coasts and his most ambitious project in tracing the Mekong trail. Since 1985, he has won prestigious awards extolling his excellence in visual world philosophy. Est: RM50,000 - RM70,000

What About Me? illustrates a toddler resting on a baby hammock with her eyes gazing directly at the viewer. The “do-it-yourself” baby hammock is common in rural areas and is usually supported by batik cloth.   The artist employs batik motif in most of his Terengganu series to celebrate the simple way of living. Intense hues of blue, red and brown on the batik floral and butterfly motif are applied in harmony with the multicoloured fishing boats moored by the beach in the background.   Chang Fee Ming seeks solace by painting his surroundings in the East coast and during his travels around the Southeast Asia region, producing captivating scenes of fishermen at the beach in his hometown Terengganu; detailed illustrations of vibrant tangerine fabric worn by monks in Myanmar; and bountiful offerings in Bali.   Chang Fee Ming is an accomplished watercolourist known for his unique renditions and interpretations of peoples, traditional societies and their cultures and the often exotic, remote places he visited in Indonesia, Nepal, Africa, the Indo-Chinese communities along the Mekong right up to its source in Tibet. Focusing on the solid hips, strong arm and feet of perhaps a consumer and a trader at a local farmer's market, this compositionally sound piece captures the rear of the former bending forward to reach for the fresh produce on offer while the latter crouches on the ground front facing the viewer - in the act of perhaps preparing to display some chillies over a white cloth - which doubles as a mat and is later used to store leftovers from the day's sale. Suggested by the abundance of fruits and vegetables laid on the ground, this piece illustrates the economic activity still prevalent till this day. It also depicts the postures of the mature women conveying steadfastness, endurance and hard work. The artist employs batik in most of his Terengganu series to celebrate the simple way of living. Intense hues of black, brown and red on the batik floral motif are applied in harmony with the multicoloured fruits and vegetables creating a wealth of visual experience for both the artist and the audience. Dalem Puri Perliatan VII is a sketch created by Chang Fee Ming for the exhibition in Bali titled From South China Sea... To Mount Agung, a solo show which works was displayed almost concurrently in Kuala Lumpur and Bali in 2012. Wayan Juniartha wrote in the exhibition catalogue that the show is "a celebration of journeys, of changes, and, most importantly, of the ephemeral nature of our (physical) existence. We are all on the journey to the mountain, to find our last moment and to rejoice on one realization that when one journey ends, another one will begin."
