Chang Fee Ming is an accomplished watercolourist known for his unique renditions and interpretations of peoples, traditional societies and their cultures and the often exotic, remote places he visited in Indonesia, Nepal, Africa, the Indo-Chinese communities along the Mekong right up to its source in Tibet. His impeccable skill is shown in the details of these works. Since his first foray to Bali in 1985, he has etched his place in Indonesian art history, especially in Bali. His array of awards includes the Malaysian Watercolour Society award (1984 and 1985), the Sime Darby Art Asia gold award (1985) and the PNB Malaysian art award (1985). He also won the Minor Awards in the Young Contemporary Artists competition in 1986 and 1987. He won distinction awards in the Rockport Publishers USA in 1997 and the Dom Perignon Portrait of A Perfectionist Award (Malaysia) in 1999. He was a co-winner (Malaysia) of the Winsor & Newton World Millennium Painting Competition in 1999. In 2009, he was selected for the Singapore Tyler Print Institute project in 2009, which resulted in his solo exhibition Imprinted Thoughts. Fee Ming was honoured with a solo at Bank Negara Malaysia Museum & Art Gallery, and at Christie's Hong Kong for 2 months in 2015, titled Chang Fee Ming: Weaving The World In Watercolour.

The traditional timber Malay house, verandah et al and often built on stilts, is a fascinating study of climatic designs with an eye to ventilation. From pure practical convenience, it later evolved with embellishments reflecting the socio-economic and sub-ethnic status of its occupants. This house espied by the wanderlust artist Chang Fee Ming in Langkawi, had the unusual adjunct of window bars obviously due to security concerns with the kampung increasingly fringing the city. The carved parts, on top with the sun motif and on the lower panels with the punched star-shaped holes, are imbued with marks of the old Malay world-view. The artist's painting skill is impeccable. Fee Ming spent some seven years traversing land, life and communities along the Mekong, the 12th longest in the world wending across six countries, and the sequel, Mekong Exploring The Source, from Weixi, Dali and Xishuangbanna in China down to Cuu Long, or Nine Dragons Delta in Vietnam. The countries covered were China, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. The years 1984-1985 launched Chang Fee Ming as a major watercolourist when he won the coveted Asean Gold Award in the Sime Darby Art Asia competition (1985), the 1st Prize in the PNB Malaysia Art Competition (1985), and the Malaysian Watercolour Society Awards in 1984 and again in 1985. He also won the Minor Awards in the prestigious national Young Contemporaries (Bakat Muda Sezaman) in 1986 and again in 1987. Other laurels include the Awards of Distinction, Rockport Publishers USA 1997 and the Dom Perignon Portrait of A Perfectionist Award, Malaysia (1999); Co-winner of the Winsor & Newton World Millennium Painting Competition (1999). For two consecutive years in 1986 and 1987, Chang Fee Ming departed from his usual watercolour métier of exotic Asian and African places, to produce stunning works that won the coveted Minor Awards of the Young Contemporary Artists (Bakat Muda Sezaman, BMS) both times. The winning 1986 mixed media work, Chord Of Friendship, is a double-edge weapon with undercurrents of tension using 16 innocuous newspaper clip excerpts of peace and rapprochement. As the Latin adage goes, Si vis pacem, para bellum (If you want peace, prepare for war). The work of newspaper, fishing net, strings, hooks and wood fits the theme of International Year of Peace. The taut tug of strings from the weaver’s shuttles suggest an ever-present tension, while the irony of the shuttles’ shape of pen nibs symbolically used to ink peace looking like missiles is not lost. Friendship among nations is not a permanent thing and this is borne out by the effects of globalization from an erstwhile bipolar world of the Cold War in the second half of the 20th century. The main pictures are taken from newsclippings of then prime minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s 1985 visit to China, following up on the epochal 1974 visit by then prime minister Tun Abdul Razak. This work was re-shown at the Imbas Kembali BMS in 1999. An extraordinary artist working mainly in watercolours, the wanderlust Chang Fee Ming has a string of accolades that inscribes his pre-eminence: the Sime Darby Art Asia Award (Gold / Overall Asean Prize, 1985); the Malaysian Watercolour Society Award in 1984 and 1985); the PNB Malaysian Art Competition (1st Prize, 1985) He also received Awards of Distinction from the Rockport Publishers USA (1997) and Dom Perignon Malaysia (1999), and was a co-winner (Malaysia) of the Winsor & Newton World Millennium Competition in 1999. In the Larasati Jan 26, 2013 auction in Singapore, his seminal work, Mandalay from the 1995 Road to Mandalay exhibition in Jakarta, Indonesia, sold for a premium of S$103,700 (RM255,924) – a record for a watercolour in Southeast Asia.

Two women squatting and huddled in the limited shade of a boat parked on the beachfront, making a transaction over small fishes (in basket). There’s not much to be made by the itinerant vendor from selling small fishes, in the hot sun, and it’s probably a luxury for the other party to be able to afford to buy. Only the rainbow- strip patterns of the boat, though straited, offers a colourful respite to the scene. Such is the industry and enterprise of the Kelantan womenfolk that they can be seen in the padi-fields, in the open wet market and on the sea shore, helping out net-mending, making fish crackers (keropok) and dried anchovies or carrying the haul or fishing gear back. No stereotype gender roles in the kitchen for them, although they would be firing up the stoves, to cook food for the family. Still, with modern marketing, sorting and distribution under the LKIM (Lembaga Kemajuan Ikan Malaysia), these women may be rendered obsolete, but you can’t easily put these matriarchs down or out. Chang Fee Ming has produced some of the most spectacular watercolour tomes tracing the Mekong, on Bali, East Africa and the Malaysian East Coast, among other places. He had twice won the Malaysian Watercolour Society award (1984 and 1985) and the Bakat Muda Sezaman Minor Awards (1986 and 1987) besides 1st Prize in the PNB competition (1985). His biggest prize was the Gold and Overall Asean Prize in the Sime Darby Art Asia Competition in 1985. Other accolades include two Awards of Distinction, Rockport Publishers USA 1997; the Dom Perignon Portrait of A Perfectionist Award, Malaysia 1999; and the Winsor & Newton World Millennium Painting Competition (co-winner, Malaysian category (1999).

The ginger plant, as are many others in tropical Asian botany, has always fascinated Chang Fee Ming, for the colours, shape, intricacies and efficacy of its purported medicinal qualities. The fluttering of colourful transparent flags inscribed with Tibetan incantations and reflecting the rarefied landscapes are a soothing prayer of life, the beginning and the end. Chang Fee Ming seeks solace by painting his surroundings in the East coast and during his travels around the Southeast Asia region, producing captivating scenes of fishermen at the beach in his hometown Terengganu; detailed illustrations of vibrant tangerine fabric worn by monks in Myanmar; and bountiful offerings in Bali. Focusing on the solid hips, strong arm and feet of perhaps a consumer and a trader at a local farmer's market, this compositionally sound piece captures the rear of the former bending forward to reach for the fresh produce on offer while the latter crouches on the ground front facing the viewer - in the act of perhaps preparing to display some chillies over a white cloth - which doubles as a mat and is later used to store leftovers from the day's sale. Suggested by the abundance of fruits and vegetables laid on the ground, this piece illustrates the economic activity still prevalent till this day. It also depicts the postures of the mature women conveying steadfastness, endurance and hard work. The artist employs batik in most of his Terengganu series to celebrate the simple way of living. Dalem Puri Perliatan VII is a sketch created by Chang Fee Ming for the exhibition in Bali titled From South China Sea... To Mount Agung, a solo show which works was displayed almost concurrently in Kuala Lumpur and Bali in 2012. Wayan Juniartha wrote in the exhibition catalogue that the show is "a celebration of journeys, of changes, and, most importantly, of the ephemeral nature of our (physical) existence. We are all on the journey to the mountain, to find our last moment and to rejoice on one realization that when one journey ends, another one will begin." Chang Fee Ming is an accomplished watercolourist known for his unique renditions and interpretations of peoples, traditional societies and their cultures and the often exotic, remote places he visited in Indonesia, Nepal, Africa, the Indo-Chinese communities along the Mekong right up to its source in Tibet. Since his first foray to Bali in 1985, he has etched his place in Indonesian art history, especially in Bali. Here, we see Fee Ming skillfully captures the warm coastal sunlight caressing the pillows, bolster and sarong while exploring details and texture of the textiles. Fee Ming cleverly creates a dialog among them, a kind of conference if you wish. This is a truly special piece from Fee Ming's early window series. A self-taught artist born in the town of Dungun in Terengganu, Malaysia in 1959, Chang has made spectacular progress over the years and now is among the finest Asia's watercolour virtuosos. His works have been exhibited and collected throughout Asia, Europe, and the USA. He received the international award Rockport Publisher's Award of Distinction USA. One of his works was selected by Winsor & Newton for the United Nation's Millennium Art Exhibition London, Stockholm, and New York.
