Boxer Milner - Born: c.1935 Location: Milnga-Milnga near Sturt Creek Skin: Tjampitjin Language: Tjaru

Boxer is a well respected community elder and successful painter living in Kururrungku Community, also known as Billiluna, near Sturt Creek. He is a Tjaru speaker from country north of Balgo.

He and his two brothers are custodians for the country and the stories of the Sturt Creek area. Boxer's paintings depict different physical and Dreaming aspects of the middle and upper stretches of Sturt Creek. He often depicts the flooding of the creek, and the changes to the country this brings, both during the flooding and after the water starts to recede.

The area of Milnga-Milnga, where Boxer was born, is a major flood plain for Sturt Creek and is inundated every summer after the rains. The artist's family, who have always lived here, 'look after' the area by keeping its associated Law and ceremonies. A significant portrayal of the water in Boxer's paintings of Sturt Creek is white, depicting the 'milk water' which runs after rain has fallen in the clay soils upstream of Billiluna. His work includes wonderful rainbows, rain clouds and the temporary creeks that are formed during the wet season, as well as distinctive portrayals of eucalyptus trees in the area.

He has participated in numerous group exhibitions since the early 1990s, has held several solo shows, and his work is represented in a number of major public and private collections. He is undoubtedly one of Balgo's most respected artists. Unfortunately he has been in poorer health in recent years and is not painting actively any more.

Born south-west of Billiluna near Sturt Creek, Boxer was one of a small number who came from the transition zone between the desert and the river country in Tjaru land. Here the country and vegetation move from flat and featureless rolling Spinifex plains to flood plains with enormous river channels and permanent water holes.

          Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Boxer was one of a small number of artists who came from the transition zone between the desert and the river country in Tjaru land south-west of Billiluna. Here, the country and vegetation move from flat and featureless rolling Spinifex plains to flood plains with enormous river channels and permanent waterholes. The yearly cycles of flood and dry create swamps with abundant bird life, through which runs Purkitji, or Sturt Creek. Boxer’s paintings, refer to the miraculous transformations in the land and sky as new life seeps into the flat lands; of the passage of water and the changing coloured tides; and the mythological drama associated with the sight and sound of thunder, lightning, rain, and brilliant rainbows. Colour changes represent the trees and vegetation, the red and white stones, the black soil, the myriad channels and tributaries, the hills and the contours that define the artist’s home. In this work, Boxer has painted some of his country, found along the middle section of Purkitji, north of Balgo. The section painted red in the lower left hand corner depicts a massacre site where many of Boxer's family were killed. The purple area in the top left hand corner of the painting depicts milkwater and mud, the yellow/brown area to the right depicts dry ground.

Boxer Milner was a senior Law man who, along with his two brothers, were custodians of the desert country around the middle and upper stretches of Sturt Creek in the Kimberley. His images invariably depicted the creek, and surrounding country during flood, and after floodwater recedes. The area of Milnga-Milnga is a major flood plain which is inundated every summer after the rains. Boxer's paintings show tributaries and the 'milk water' that runs after rain has fallen in the clay soils upstream of Billiluna. His work includes the depiction of rainbows, rain clouds, and the temporary creeks that are formed during the wet season. As a younger man, Boxer worked around this area as a stockman, and gained an intimate knowledge of this country.

Here, the country and vegetation move from flat and featureless rolling Spinifex plains to flood plains with enormous river channels and permanent waterholes. The yearly cycles of flood and dry create swamps with abundant bird life, through which runs Purkitji, or Sturt Creek. It is the intimate knowledge of all the facets of the river system as a traditional owner of Purkitji, which informed the majority of Boxer+IBk-s paintings and his unique aesthetic. In Boxer+IBk-s paintings, floodwaters are coloured by the white silt of the surrounding clay country. This is the +IBg-milk water+IBk, which provides a geometric grid against which the rest of the landscape is represented. His motifs refer to the miraculous transformations in the land and sky as new life seeps into the flat lands; of the passage of water and the changing coloured tides; and the mythological drama associated with the sight and sound of thunder, lightning, rain, and brilliant rainbows. Colour changes represent the trees and vegetation, the red and white stones, the black soil, the myriad channels and tributaries, the hills and the contours that define the artist+IBk-s home. All this is contained within the dot and line work that surrounds the inescapable forms and patterns that Boxer Milner employed to portray Purkitji. In this work, Boxer depicts the flooded creeks and billabongs at Marduwarra near Pukitji, north of Balgo Hills." Contact Cooee Art for more information on this Aboriginal artwork.

          Est: $6,000 - $8,000

Boxer Milner lived on Tjaru land, where the country and vegetation move from flat and featureless rolling Spinifex plains to flood plains with enormous river channels and permanent water holes. Here the yearly cycles of flood and dry create swamps with abundant bird life, through which runs Purkitji, or Sturt Creek. This work depicts a ceremonial re-enactment of the creation story of Djaringarra, a site found along the central sections of Purkitji (Sturt Creek). Boomerangs that were carved by the artist were used as a stencil to create the painting. These boomerangs are 'clapped' during dancing in men's ceremony itself. The circles represent tjurrnu (rockholes) which occur after the waters of Purkitji have receded following the wet season. Boxer's unique aesthetic was informed by his intimate knowledge of all the facets of the river system. His paintings all depict different physical and mythological aspects of the middle and upper stretches of Sturt Creek.

          Est: $6,000 - $8,000

Born south-west of Billiluna near Sturt Creek c.1934, Boxer Milner was one of a small number of people who lived in the transition zone between the desert and the river country of the South Kimberley region. This is Tjaru land, where the country and vegetation move from flat and featureless rolling spinifex plains to flood plains with enormous river channels and permanent water holes. Here the yearly cycles of flood and dry create swamps with abundant bird life, through which runs Purkitji, or Sturt Creek. His paintings all depict different physical and mythological aspects of the middle and upper stretches of Sturt Creek. The area of his birth, Milnga-Milnga, is a major flood plain and is inundated every summer after the rains. Boxer portrays water as the white 'milk water' which runs after rain in the clay soils upstream of Billiluna. His work includes wonderful rainbows, rain clouds and the temporary creeks and tributaries that are formed during the wet season. In this work we see two places where Cranya Creek crosses Sturt Creek. The white lines represent tributaries while the orange is the dry country known as Njama Njama. During the 'wet' this country floods and the blue areas become swamps. There are two soakwaters near this important place in Boxer's traditional country.

Boxer Milner, a tall gentle old cattleman, began painting in the late 1980s. Growing in confidence as an artist through the 1990s, his paintings veered further and further away from conventional Balgo aesthetics as he went on to create ever more exciting and challenging compositions. Born at Milnga-Milnga, south-west of Billiluna near Sturt Creek, Boxer was one of a small number who came from the transition zone between the desert and the river country in Tjaru land. Here the country and vegetation move from flat and featureless rolling Spinifex plains to flood plains with enormous river channels and permanent water holes. The yearly cycles of flood and dry create swamps with abundant bird life, through which runs Purkitji, or Sturt Creek. In this small work Boxer depicts the flooded creeks and billabongs at Marduwarra near Pukitji, north of Balgo Hills.
