A William IV silver gilt ‘castle-top’ vinaigrette by Nathaniel Mills , the lid with a die-cast view of the ruins of Dryburgh Abbey, within cast foliate and scroll borders and thumbpiece, engine-turned decoration to sides and base, enclosing a pierced hinged grill, later applied gold plaque to the base, double struck hallmark to inner rim of base and outer edge, Birmingham 1835, length 4.8cm. £300-£500 --- Dryburgh Abbey is located near Melrose, in Berwickshire, on the banks of the River Tweed. The abbey was destroyed in the expedition of the Earl of Hertford in 1545. Sir Walter Scott and his family are interred at Dryburgh. This is one of the rarer views found on snuff boxes and vinaigrettes by Nathaniel Mills. Condition Report Rubbing to the high points of the lid. Scratched retailer’s stock numbers to inside lid. A Victorian silver pierced card case, mark of Nathaniel Mills, Birmingham 1837 (with William IV duty mark), of rectangular form, each side decorated all over with decorative pierced scrolls and foliage around a vacant abstract cartouche, piano hinged cover similarly decorated, 9.5 x 7cm, 2.5ozt Nathaniel Mills senior registered his mark in 1803 as one part of the partnership 'Mills and Langston'. In 1825, he left the partnership and concentrated on making silver items on his own, registering his now famous punch mark 'N.M' within a rectangle at the Birmingham Assay Office. Nathaniel Mills II was born in 1811 and worked for his father. Now famous for their high quality and well-constructed objets, they became one of the most prolific Birmingham box makers at the time. Their products appealed to a public fascinated by novelty and became - and still are - highly collectible. Most of their items were made between 1830 and 1853. Nathaniel Mills died in 1873 a rich man, leaving £30,000 in his will, and is buried in Warstone Lane Cemetery, in the heart of the Birmingham jewellery quarter. Calling cards were left behind by a visitor at the premises if the required person was not available. They served as both an introductory letter and a symbol of manners and social standing. The custom of leaving visiting cards lasted throughout the 19th and into the early 20th century and at the time, card cases were extremely popular, allowing the owners to subtly display their wealth and good taste.

A silver 'Castle Top' card case in the manner of Nathaniel Mills, mark not traced (RC), London 1999, of rectangular form with scrolled edge, decorated in repoussé; the front depicting a view of Windsor Castle from across the Thames within scroll and flower head decoration, verso with foliate scroll and flower head decoration over a textured ground around a vacant abstract cartouche, piano hinged cover similarly decorated and bordered, 9.5 x 6.5cm, 3.4ozt 'Castle Top' silver, decorated with British landmarks and sold as souvenirs to tourists, was at the height of fashion between 1840 to 1860 and renowned silversmith, Nathaniel Mills, was a major contributor to its popularity. Most 'Castle Top' silver is made by die stamping (pushing the metal out from behind, using a stamp). The greater the decoration stands clear from the front of the cover, the harder it is to make, and these examples are highly sought after by collectors.

A William IV cast silver gilt vinaigrette with 'scenic agate' cover, mark of Nathaniel Mills, Birmingham, probably 1835, of oval form, the piano hinged cover lap set with a slice of dendritic 'scenic' agate, the natural inclusions giving the appearance of a winter scene, verso with foliate decoration around a central vacant oval cartouche, sides similarly decorated, interior with part marked, hinged and pierced grille with scrolled decoration around a central flower, 5 x 4cm, 2ozt gross Footnote: Dendritic agate - actually a translucent chalcedony - is prized for its natural tree or fern like inclusions called dendrites (from the Greek for tree-like) of iron or manganese. They are formed from the crystallisation of decomposing solutions of neighbouring rock. Clever and skilled cutting - bringing the inclusions almost to the surface of the stone - is required to reveal their natural beauty which often appear to resemble ice crystals, trees or even, as in this example, a whole winter scene.
