Millet, publié à Paris, J. Claye, 1860. Conçue vers 1858, et gravée en 1860 par Adrien Lavieille, la série de gravures des Quatre Heures du jour s’attache à montrer le côté plaisant, idyllique du travail au milieu d’une nature intacte. Le trajet du couple de paysans vers le champ au petit matin, la sieste commune en milieu de journée, la fin bienfaisante de la journée de travail et la soirée en famille, tout témoigne de l’alliance étroite entre l’homme et la nature. « Elles inspirent l’amour de la campagne et le respect pour le paysan » écrivait le critique Philippe Burty dans la Gazette des Beaux-Arts après la publication de la série. Comme à son habitude, Millet a par la suite utilisé ses dessins pour d’autres œuvres. Les variantes les plus connues sont les pastels reprenant les quatre scènes de la suite de gravures réalisés à la fin des années 1860 : Le Départ pour le travail de 1867 (localisation inconnue), La Méridienne de 1866 (Boston, Museum of Fine Arts), La Fin de la journée de 1867-69 (Rochester, Memorial Art Gallery of the University) et La Veillée de 1867 (Boston, Museum of Fine Arts). Admirateur de Millet, qu’il considère comme « un peintre plus moderne que Manet », Vincent Van Gogh entreprend en 1889 de traduire en couleurs les Quatre Heures du jour. Il justifie ainsi sa démarche à son frère Théo : « C'est plutôt traduire dans une autre langue, celle des couleurs, les impressions de clair-obscur en blanc et noir ». Des quatre toiles peintes entre 1880 et 1890, La méridienne (Paris, musée d’Orsay) reste la plus emblématique du rapport entre les deux artistes. Elle fut peinte lors du séjour de Van Gogh à Saint-Rémy de Provence alors qu'il était interné dans un asile.

Attributed to FRANCISQUE MILLET (Antwerp, 1642-1679). "Landscape with figures". Oil on canvas. Measurements: 63 x 77 cm; 80 x 93 cm (frame). The similarities between this panoramic landscape and the paintings of Francisque Millet preserved in museums such as the National Gallery in London is evident by the use of fluffy shades and the way of introducing small figures that always remain in the background with respect to the bucolic splendor of the landscape. Often they are lakeside landscapes or crossed by clear and mirror-like rivers, as on this occasion, on whose surface the silhouettes of adobe buildings and lush vegetation are reflected. François Millet, also known as Francisque Millet, was a Flemish painter. After traveling through Holland and England, he settled in Paris. The attribution of his works is doubtful, as they are not signed, but they are usually attributed from earlier engravings by his hand. He was influenced by artists such as Nicolas Poussin, Claude Lorrain, Gaspard Dughet and Salvator Rosa, generally in landscapes of picturesque tone. One of his most famous works is "Mountain Landscape with Lightning" (1675, National Gallery, London). His son Jean (1666-1723) and grandson Joseph (1697-1777) were also painters.

Biography from the Archives of askART: Jean Francois Millet was what Gustave Courbet pretended to be: the son of peasants. Born in 1814, at Gruchy near Cherbourg, he spent most of his life in rural France. He received his first instruction in art from Langlois at Cherbourg in 1832. His aptitude was so obvious that he was granted a pension by the Municipal Council to enable him to study art in Paris. In 1837, he joined the Parisian studio of Delaroche where Diaz and Rousseau were his fellow pupils. He first exhibited at the Salon in 1840. He was able to perceive the land and the labor it exacted from men as substance and process, not as a sight for city-dwelling impressionists on an outing. For some time he earned a living painting portraits in Cherbourg where he had returned. In 1845 he was in Paris once more; he devoted himself entirely to peasant and figure painting, at which he worked solely from memory. Though he lived to see himself the most famous of the painters who worked at Barbizon, during much of his life he was on the verge of poverty. There were times when Millet and his wife had nothing to eat, but they did make sure that their children did not suffer. As a result of his privation he was subject all his life to fearful headaches and pains in his eyes. But he never complained. Yet Millet painted one of the most popular pictures of the 19th century. Even his most famous canvas he had difficulty selling, but once sold, its rise in value was fantastic. But Millet's faults were made especially conspicuous by the trends of more modern painting. He was a powerful draftsman, but he was indifferent to color; he was a touching poet, but he often became sentimental; he was an admirable humanitarian, but he rarely conveyed his feelings with any charm or beauty of brushwork. Consequently his canvases sank in critical esteem to a point below their real worth. He died at Barbizon surrounded by the life and people he had loved. JEAN-FRANÇOIS MILLET Le Semeur. Lithograph on antique cream laid paper, 1851. 192x156 mm; 7 5/8x6 1/8 inches, full margins. Third state (of 3). A superb, dark impression with strong contrasts and with all the subtle tonal variations distinct. Millet's (1814-1875) Le Semeur (or The Sower) is based on his same-titled oil on canvas from 1850, now in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Millet moved to Barbizon in 1849, a village in the Fontainebleau forest, outside Paris. There he was part of the artist group of the Barbizon school, including Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875) and Charles-François Daubigny (1817-1878), which painted subdued realistic landscapes and peasant figures in contrast to the traditional and entrenched Romantic style. Millet was himself a farmer's son and represented in his art, with dignity and seriousness, the hard-working life of the rural population. Le Semeur was the first major oil painting that Millet made in Barbizon. He exhibited it at the Paris Salon in 1850 where it received significant attention and criticism. Millet returned to the subject several times again, in oil and color pastels (Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; Clark Art Institute, Williamstown; and Walters Art Museum, Baltimore), as well as this contemporaneous lithograph. Vincent van Gogh found inspiration in Millet's paintings of agricultural landscapes and farm workers. He copied Le Semeur in several of his own paintings from the 1880s, but transformed the images with his brighter palette and signature Post-Impressionist style. Delteil 22; Melot 22.
