In the first case, it may be attributed to William Miller, 1796-1882, a Scottish line engraver and watercolorist who was one of the principal engravers of William Turner.       [DALVIMART, Octavien]. The Costume of Turkey. London: by T. Bensley for William Miller, 1802 [watermarked 1796]. 2° (360 x 259mm). Title in French and English, hand-coloured stipple-engraved vignette on English title, text in English and French, 60 hand-coloured stipple-engraved plates by Dadley and William Poole after Dalimvart. (Light spotting and offsetting, tear to text leaf of plate XXXIII without loss.) Contemporary straight-grained half red morocco gilt (extremities rubbed, corners bumped). Provenance: George Gilpin (bookplate). FIRST EDITION, text and plate leaves watermarked 1796. This work has text based on various sources (d'Ohsson, Dallaway, Tott, etc.). According to the preface, Dalvimart travelled in Turkey in about 1798 and made drawings on the spot. He was certainly in Athens in 1797, but little else is known of his life and works. Colas 782; Lipperheide 1422; cf. Abbey Travel 370; cf. Blackmer 444 (late reprint).
