      • Prints by Folk Artist Lewis Miller - 2 [146426]
        Feb. 27, 2022

Prints by Folk Artist Lewis Miller - 2 [146426]

        Est: $150 - $300

Two framed, hand-colored, very early prints of drawings by Lewis Miller (1796-1882), a Pennsylvania Dutch folk artist who worked as a carpenter. Miller kept journals in which he sketched scenes from his daily life and surroundings. Many of his drawings are housed in Colonial Williamsburg and a museum in his birthplace of York, Pennsylvania. One of these prints is titled by Miller as "The Court House in Christiansburg in the year - 1831, and old Jail," and the other is titled "Residence of Mr. Croctett in Wytheville, July 1 the, 1856." and it has a lower caption that reads " A Large Elm Tree Struck by Lightning in the Evening, Eighty feet from the house at Stewart Croctett." (I know, you'd think it was Crockett, but he did not write it that way.) This one shows a lightning bolt striking a tree in the upper left. The Court House print was carefully removed from the frame for close examination. It is definitely not an original drawing but a very early type of print that was hand tinted with watercolor. The prints are 6-5/8 x 8-1/4 inches in simple wooden frames that are approx. 8 x 9-1/2 inches. When examined, the backing paper was discovered to be a recycled color print, probably from a tabloid. Date: 1850s Country (if not USA): State: City: Provenance:

Manuscript journal and sketchbook of his travels in Europe. Small 4to, original boards with titlepage reading "First Volume, II [sic] des Ludwig Miller's Reise Journal in Deutschland . . . von dem Jahre 1840-41 . . . . 114 pages of text in English with occasional quotations in German, illustrated with a folding map and 128 watercolors (seven folding) or pen-and- ink sketches. Covers worn, a few leaves loose, two folding sketches parted. The American folk artist Lewis Miller (1796-1882) was born in York, Pennsylvania and from a very early age drew scenes of life in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and other parts of the United States. In 1840, he visited Europe for the only time in his life, landing in Liverpool and later touring London. Included in this manuscript is an amusing sketch of him and his traveling companions dining at a London chop house and a drawing of Queen Victoria and her entourage in St. James's Park. The bulk of the sketchbook however, is devoted to his travels in Germany; among other cities he describes and draws Gotha, Ingolstadt, Carlsruhe, Strasburg, Heidelberg, and Wurzburg. Everywhere he portrays castles, town streets, bridges, fountains, statues (including both Luther and Clavin), churches, military reviews, and daily life. As is characteristic of his work, there are vigorous portrayals of the inhabitants (in local costume) and their activities. The scenes are carefully identified and sometimes dated, with descriptions that are lively and amiable.
