            MILLER, Henry, 1891 – 1980.

            Est: €460 - €600

MILLER, Henry, 1891 – 1980. 2 e. Br. m. 1948. "... It is I who feel terrible, to have neglected you … the truth is, I haven’t enough to make ends meet. Can’t even pay my 1947 taxes … Then, too, I have an ex-wife who is desperate and hungry – and I can’t even aid her. It galls me and saddens me. We live in the midst of abundance – but to get what is barely necessary is almost impossible. Prices for food here are fantastic! astronomical. I have written friends about you … Have you heard or received nothing? Can’t understand Rowohlt. Had to hear you may translate ‘The Smile’ … / I have the two Hesse books, in English – great favorites here. Am trying now to get ‘Das Glasper[le]nspiel’, – in any languages … / Am now sending Girodias Vol.I. (‘Sexus’) of the ‘The Rosy Crucifixion’, to publish in English first. Am frightfully occupied – and more and more visitors all the time … I curse myself for not being able to do something for you. For the time being my hands are tied. But I shan’t ever forget your plight, believe me …" 1950. "... Can you tell me who is publishing ‘The World of Sex’? / About ‘Into the night Life’ – glad to know it will be exhibited in Munich. After that, would you please hold it until I know exactly what to do? As for Radio Munich, I wrote them I would not fill out more papers – too absurd for such a trivial sum …"

            HENRY MILLER SELF-PORTRAIT PAINTING

            Est: $15,000 - $20,000

Henry Miller's Original Watercolor Painting Self Portrait Portrait for Brenda Watercolor on paper 1977 Signed and dated lower right Inscribed lower left: For Brenda, Happy Birthday 11/10/77 23 x 27 inches (sight) Framed: 31.25 x 25 inches “I have always cherished old things, used things, things marked by the passage of time and human events. I think of my own self this way, as something much handled, much knocked about, as worn and polished with use and abuse. As something serviceable, perhaps I should say. More serviceable for having had so many masters, so many wretched, glorious, haphazard experiences and encounters. Which explains, perhaps, why it is that when I start to do a head it always turns into a 'self-portrait.'” - From Henry Miller’s 1960 book, “To Paint Is to Love Again,” in which the author ruminates on painters and paintings, and recounts how his love for art evolved into his love of painting. Although best known as an author of such norm-shattering books as Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn, Henry Miller was also an avid watercolorist. Miller had always loved art and began painting in the late 1920’s, after being inspired by J.M.W. Turner prints exhibited in the window of a Brooklyn store. Although Miller could not draw well, he made up for it with is use of color and his sense of composition. In his art, as in his writing, Miller painted from his sub-conscious, drawing on the same mixture of surrealism and dreams that also punctuated his novels. His watercolors exhibited, in varying degrees, the influence of European Modernism, Surrealism, Dada, and Expressionism. Miller produced numerous watercolors during his life, continuing to paint through his last years (as evidenced by references to this in his letters to Brenda Venus, offered as Lot 44 of this auction), but sold very few. In his lean years in New York and Paris, Miller used his paintings for barter, trading them for paint supplies, coffee, and food. Later on, he gave away the majority of his paintings to friends and fans around the world. Miller’s watercolors have been exhibited at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, California; and Henry Miller Museum of Art in Ōmachi City, Nagano, Japan, as well as galleries in London, Berlin, Paris, Los Angeles, and Uppsala, Sweden.
