      George Miller Sternberg (1838-1915) first U.S. bacteriologist

      [MILITARY] George Miller Sternberg (1838-1915) U.S. Army physician who is considered the first U.S. bacteriologist, having written Manual of Bacteriology (1892). After he survived typhoid and yellow fever, Sternberg documented the cause of malaria (1881), discovered the cause of lobar pneumonia (1881), and confirmed the roles of the bacilli of tuberculosis and typhoid fever (1886). Offered here is a 1896 bank check endorsed on the verso by Sternberg. The check was sent and signed by Robert Simpson Woodward (1849-1924) American civil engineer, physicist and mathematician. Woodward sends $100 to Sternberg who was Treasurer of the Pasteur Monument Committee. Fine. VERY RARE!

Baltimore, Jan. 26, 1886, discussing his preferred disinfectant solution, in part: "...I would say that in Standard Env. No. 2 the potassium... is added because it is an excellent deodorant - Whereas mercuric chloride has not the power to neutralize a fecal odor..." Fine.

      GEORGE MILLER STERNBERG (1838-1915) American physician in Medical Corps of the U.S. Army, serving under General Sykes in the Army of the Potomac; participated in the battle of First Bull Run where he was taken prisoner. In 1893, he was named U.S. Surgeon General. Fine T.L.S. "Geo. M. Sternberg" as Surgeon General, 1p. 4to., "War Department, Surgeon General's Office", Washington, Mar. 10, 1898, written on the verso of a letter from Charles Keller, 1st Lieut., Corps of Engineers, Rock Island, Ill. in answer to his request about how to pay a civilian physician employed by an Army officer, in part: "…Blank forms No. 26, are enclosed [no longer present] on which accounts for medical services rendered to officers or enlisted men on duty... should be prepared in duplicate. Such accounts may either be paid by the officer to whom the services are rendered, in which case he is entitled to reimbursements by the Government, or the account may be rendered in favor of the physician who rendered the services, to whom payment will then be made...". Light soiling at folds, otherwise in very good condition.

GEORGE MILLER STERNBERG (1838-1915) American physician in Medical Corps of the U.S. Army, serving under General Sykes in the Army of the Potomac, participated in the battle of 1st Bull Run where he was taken prisoner. Engaged in bacteriological study, he was the first to demonstrate the plasmodium of malaria and the vacilli of tuberculosis and of typhoid fever; in 1893 named U.S. Surgeon General. Fine T.L.S. "Geo. M. Sternberg" as Surgeon General, 1p., 4to.on imprinted "War Department, Surgeon General's Office" letterhead, Washington, Apr. 23, 1898, to George P. Sprague, M.D., North Danvers, Mass.", in part: "...with thanks, the receipt of your letter of the 21st instant tendering your services as a medical officer in the event of war with Spain, I have to inform you that should a necessity arise for your services your application will receive due consideration...". Just two day after this letter, America did declare war on Spain, the hostilities resulting from the mysterious explosion in February that sunk the battleship U.S. "Maine" while moored in Havana harbor. Folds, wrinkles, good condition. $500 - 600
