        EARL BEAUFORD MILLER (1930 - 2003) African Flyer. Collage of various printed and color papers, 1965. 406x381 mm; 16x15 inches. Signed and dated in ink, lower center. Provenance: the Museum of Modern Art Lending Services, New York, with the label on the frame back: private collection, Massachusetts. This colorful collage is listed as one of several of Earl Miller's works in Cederholm's Afro-American Artists, and is only the second recorded artwork by Miller to come to auction. The Chicago-born artist studied at the Pratt Institute of Art with Richard Lindner and at the Brooklyn Museum Art School with Reuben Tam from 1954-1956. Miller exhibited in 1960 and 1961 at the Phoenix Gallery, New York, before living and exhibiting throughout Europe, including Germany, Spain and Scandinavia. After returning to the New York, in 1963 he became one of the younger members of the Spiral Group collective, joining his mentor Charles Alston and artists Emma Amos, Romare Bearden, Reginald Gammon, Felrath Hines, Alvin Hollingsworth, Norman Lewis, Richard Mayhew, Merton Simpson, Hale Woodruff and James Yeargans. Miller went on to teach visual art at the University of Washington, Seattle from 1969.

        Earl Miller 1930-2003 Tone Poem with Two Blue Squares 1974 color silkscreen 18 x 24 inches (image) 24 x 30 inches (sheet) signed, dated, and numbered 74/150 signed, titled, and numbered verso Earl Miller was born in Chicago and studied at Roosevelt College, the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago; Pratt Institute; Art Students League; and the Brooklyn Museum School in New York. He also studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste, Germany. Miller’s early influences in Chicago, especially at the Institute of Design (a.k.a., the Chicago Bauhaus, because it was founded by Bauhaus master, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy), would have been in abstraction. In New York, Miller joined the group Spiral, the year this work was executed (1963). He exhibited in an important group show which included Beauford Delaney, Herbert Gentry, Sam Middleton, Larry Potter, Norma Morgan and Walter Williams in Copenhagen in 1964: 10 American Negro Artists Living and Working in Europe. He also exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, along with an extensive list of exhibitions in Europe. He eventually began teaching at the University of Washington in Seattle (1969).

This abstraction is the first recorded artwork by painter and graphic artist Earl Miller to come to auction. The Chicago-born artist studied at the Pratt Institute of Art with Richard Lindner and at the Brooklyn Museum Art School with Reuben Tam from 1954-1956. Miller exhibited in 1960 and 1961 at the Phoenix Gallery, New York, before living and exhibiting throughout Europe, including Germany, Spain and Scandinavia. After returning to the New York art scene, he was one of the younger members of the Spiral Group, joining his mentor Charles Alston in 1963. The Spiral collective of African-American artists came together in New York City in the 1960s to form a unified artists' response to the Civil Rights struggle. In addition to Miller and Alston, it included artists Emma Amos, Romare Bearden, Reginald Gammon, Felrath Hines, Alvin Hollingsworth, Norman Lewis, Richard Mayhew, Merton Simpson, Hale Woodruff and James Yeargans. Miller went on to teach art at the University of Washington, Seattle from 1969.
