          Jun. 11, 2024

MANOLO MILLARES SALL (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1936 - Madrid, 1972). "Fallen man", 1968. Ink on GVARRO paper. Hand signed and dated. Signed, dated and titled on the back.

          Est: €14,000 - €16,000

MANOLO MILLARES SALL (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1936 - Madrid, 1972). "Fallen man", 1968. Ink on GVARRO paper. Hand signed and dated. Signed, dated and titled on the back. Presents certificate of authenticity. It presents slight horizontal folds, not very noticeable due to the intense black color of the piece. Measurements: 37 x 33 cm; 53 x 49,50 cm (frame). Millares, definitely ascribed to informalism, in a peak moment in which his production is of maximum creativity between 1968 and 1969, develops an extraordinary drawing work, where his capacity to carry out a work similar to the one developed in his harpilleras, but now without any material resource, entrusting everything to large extensions of blacks, is very striking. His work is like a "silent scream", expressive but silent, of denunciation, powerful and dramatic in which the gesture takes precedence, and strength and thought are valued. "My art is a slap in the face of death to justify life". He works intensely the paper, always in constant evolution, of great expressive creativity, vigorous in the gesture, of dark tones, that mutates in some works with predominance of black. In this work we perceive as a background his high esteem for Francisco de Goya and especially for his black paintings, which are undoubtedly at the root of his work, as well as his interest in automatic calligraphy, as we can see in the upper part of the painting where through calligraphic games of illegible writing appears the date of completion of the work, 1968. Co-founder of the group El Paso in 1957, Millares began his career in the Canary Islands, imbued with the surrealist atmosphere developed around Oscar Dominguez. His work revolves around two essential concerns, which in reality are one and the same: surrealism with its interest in the subconscious and the primitive, and the deep roots of disappeared cultures, specifically the Guanches. Self-taught, Millares made his individual debut in 1945, at the Círculo Mercantil de Las Palmas, and after four years experimenting with surrealism he decided to focus his work definitively on abstraction. In 1951 he participated in the I Bienal Hispanoamericana de arte, held in Madrid, which was his definitive encounter with contemporary artistic reality. That same year he held his first exhibition in the peninsula, in the Jardín galleries in Barcelona. From that moment on he held exhibitions and participated in group shows in Spain, Cuba, Brazil, France, Germany and the United States, among other countries. In 1955 his work takes a fundamental turn, which will distinguish a before and an after in his language, and that occurs around the discovery of burlap as a support. Thus, he left behind the works influenced by Canary Island pictographs, the result of his interest in surrealism and archeology, and began to use burlap as an element that he added to the surface of the painting, along with other materials such as sand, ceramics or wood. For the author, the sackcloth is an evocation of the cloth with which the Guanche mummies were wrapped, discovered by Millares in the Canary Island Museum. It is also 1955 the year of his establishment in Madrid; there, under the influence of Burri, the burlap will become the support, the essential element of his works. Two years later he will join the El Paso group, in which he will play a decisive role. Millares exploited to the maximum the possibilities of burlap, which he tore, tore, punctured, sewed and re-sewed, thus extolling the value of the material as a vehicle of expression. His palette is reduced and becomes sober, predominating the ochre of the sackcloth and the colors black, red and white. Abstraction is replaced by a recognizable figuration and the work acquires, even by the materials that make it up, a social and moral nuance. Until the mid-sixties black will be the main color of his work. It presents certificate of authenticity. It presents slight horizontal folds, not very noticeable due to the intense black color of the piece.

Abstraction is replaced by a recognisable figuration and the work acquires, even through the materials it is made of, a social and moral nuance. Until the mid-sixties black was the main colour in his works, but from 1964-65 onwards white took on an increasingly important role, as can be seen in his "Antropofaunas" and "Neandertalios". Manolo Millares is currently represented in numerous museums all over the world, such as the MOMA in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, the Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Fine Arts Museum in Bilbao, the Museum of Abstract Art in Cuenca and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C.

Vincente Aguilera Cerni, Millares, El Paso, Monographie n°1, Graficas Luiz Perez, Madrid, 1957, n°8, page 18, ill. Manolo Millares is one of the most important Spanish painters of Post War. He created an independent abstract-informal pictorial language after having initially experimented with Surrealism. From the mid-1950s onwards, he integrated the raw surface and aesthetic quality of traditional burlap fabrics into his pictorial works, later developing his corporeal painting further into dramatic assemblages of gathered textiles reminiscent of human forms. His 1956 cycle Composicion con dimension perdida is inspired by the organic forms of cave painting in the Canary Islands - Millares’s homeland - as well as by écriture automatique. The present work consists of an accumulation of isolated sign-like elements on a lime-white plastered surface, behind which the rough hessian emerges. The expressive power of the painting lies in the tension between positive, corporeal settings and negative, recessed surfaces, painted and hewn holes, construction and destruction. Millares, whose family was persecuted by the Franco regime, has repeatedly related the violence of the holes typical of his oeuvre to the wars of the 20th century, but the "infinite dimension" of these holes also conceals the possibility of alleviating existential fear and trauma. The exhibition of this cycle at the Sala of the Prado del Ateneo in Madrid laid the foundation for Millares’s international career; in 1957 he showed his works at the 4th Biennial in Sao Paulo, and in 1960 in two group exhibitions in New York, at the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum. „Perforated and inhabited by emptiness, the fabrics of Millares are shown to us as subjects that are marked by their own faults. For the artist, for his technique, the difficulty in considering space is tied in with its relation to emptiness, to the opening. The medium and the surface suddenly take on an evident necessity. The canvas ceasing to be the background upon which tradition is painted, becoming instead the material, torn and holed, that takes the form of a body.“ Emmanuel Guigon, „The Body of Painting II“, in: Manolo Millares. Building Bridges, Not Walls, Barcelona: Mayoral, 2017, p. 37f.

MANOLO MILLARES SALL (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1936 - Madrid, 1972). Untitled. Ink on paper. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 31 x 24 cm; 46 x 38 cm (frame). Co-founder of the El Paso group in 1957, Millares began his career in the Canary Islands, imbued with the surrealist atmosphere developed around Óscar Domínguez. His work revolves around two essential concerns, which in reality are one and the same: surrealism with its interest in the subconscious and the primitive, and the deep roots of disappeared cultures, specifically those of the Guanches. Self-taught, Millares made his individual debut in 1945, at the Círculo Mercantil in Las Palmas, and after four years experimenting with surrealism he decided to focus his work definitively on abstraction. In 1951 he took part in the I Bienal Hispanoamericana de arte, held in Madrid, which marked his definitive encounter with contemporary artistic reality. That same year he held his first exhibition on the peninsula, at the Jardín galleries in Barcelona. From then on he held exhibitions and participated in group shows in Spain, Cuba, Brazil, France, Germany and the United States, among other countries. In 1955 his work took a fundamental turn, which would mark a before and after in his language, and which took place around the discovery of sackcloth as a support. Thus, he left behind the works influenced by the pictographs of the Canary Islands, the result of his interest in surrealism and archaeology, and began to use sackcloth as an element that he added to the surface of the painting, together with other materials such as sand, ceramics or wood. For the artist, the sackcloth is an evocation of the cloth with which the Guanche mummies, discovered by Millares in the Canary Island Museum, were wrapped. It was also in 1955 that he settled in Madrid; there, under the influence of Burri, sackcloth became a support, the essential element of his works. Two years later he joined the El Paso group, in which he played a decisive role. Millares exploited the possibilities of sackcloth to the full, tearing, tearing, perforating, sewing and re-sewing it, thus extolling the value of the material as a vehicle of expression. MANOLO MILLARES SALL (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1936 - Madrid, 1972). Untitled, 1957. Ink and watercolour on card. Provenance: Vivanco family. Signed, dated and dedicated to the family of Luis Felipe Vivanco. Size: 9 x 15 cm; 34,5 x 41 cm (frame). This work corresponds to the period when Millares, already settled in Madrid, founded the group "El paso". It was common for the artist to give his closest acquaintances Christmas cards that he created himself. In this particular case the work is a Christmas card dedicated to Luis Felipe Vivanco. Spanish architect and poet who focused his poetic production on the composition of avant-garde pieces, which led him to become friends with important personalities such as Rafael Alberti and Pablo Neruda. After the outbreak of the Civil War, he devoted himself to the propagandist poetry of the Franco regime, collaborating in newspapers such as "Arriba España" and "Jerarquía". Co-founder of the El Paso group in 1957, Millares began his career in the Canary Islands, imbued with the surrealist atmosphere developed around Óscar Domínguez.
