Addison Thomas MILLAR (Warren 1860 - Philadelphie 1913) Rue Orientale Oil on panel 22 x 17 cm Signed lower left Addison T. Millar, imprint on reverse On the back, handwritten annotations T.A.M An Oriental Street Born in the United States, Addison Millar was soon recognized as a prodigy of drawing and painting. Artistic emulation at the end of the 19th century was lively in Europe: the Impressionist painters had made their revolution, and art had never been so representative of a source of novelty. This is why Addison Millar decided to start traveling in 1894. He was then 34 and had already reached a certain level of maturity in his painting. He went first to Paris, to the Académie Julian, where he studied with Benjamin Constant and Giovanni Boldini, then to Spain and Algeria in 1895. It was then that he produced his best Orientalist works. It was in the midst of these shopping streets and mosque entrances that his painting reached its peak. He conveys the prevailing atmosphere with a vivid, precise brushstroke. Millar probably spent little time in Algeria. He focused on specific scenes and architecture, reproducing them with variations. Many of his works are still preserved in the USA, where he died accidentally in 1913. Millar used to sign some of his paintings with his thumbprint, as he has done on the present work. In addition to the Smithsonian Institution, the New York Public Library, the Boston Museum of Fine Art and the Bibliothèque nationale de France, his work has been shown at the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Library of Congress and the Rhode Island School of Design.

In 1895, while visiting Spain with his friend William Merritt Chase (Millar attended the Southampton Long Island Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art directed by Chase), they crossed over to Algiers which inspired him to paint Orientalist subject matters. Millar’s work has been featured at the Smithsonian Institute, the New York Public Library, the Boston Museum of Fine Art, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Library of Congress and the Rhode Island School of Design.

He studied at the Art Students League in New York City, the Académie Julien in Paris and the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art. At the latter, he became a student and close friend of William Merritt Chase. In 1895, Millar and Chase traveled to Spain, during which Millar took a detour to Algiers. This visit provided inspiration for the Orientalist paintings that would come to define Millar's oeuvre. His frequent choice of rug merchants as subject matter aligned with artistic trends of the time, which favored cluttered interiors and exotic textures over spaciousness and refinement. Millar's rug merchant scenes showcased his talent for realism — a most prized quality in Orientalist paintings by Western artists in the late 19th and early 20th century. Millar died at the age of 53 in an automobile accident. He exhibited work with the Society of American Artists and the National Gallery of Design during his lifetime, and held solo exhibitions throughout the United States. His paintings have been shown at the Smithsonian Institute (Washington, D.C.), the Library of Congress (Washington, D.C.), the Museum of Fine Art (Boston) and the New York Public Library, among others.

(1320618) (1) (18) Addison Thomas Millar, 1860 Ohio – 1913 South Norwalk, Connecticut VIEW OF A BAZAAR IN ALGIERS, 1911Oil on canvas. Relined. 35.8 x 46 cm. Signed “Addison T. Millar” lower left, and thumbprint. In decorative frame. Provenance: Berko Fine Paintings, Paris, Brussels, Knokke. Notes: The back of the canvas shows the same fingerprint with the four initials signs “A”, “T”, “M” and “II”. The last character probably is the date and refers to the year 1911.
