Milhous, an illustrator who won the Caldecott award in 1951 for "The Egg Tree" was, herself, of Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. This fondly reminiscent image of the era of little red school houses, is one of a series of at least eight posters she designed for the Pennsylvania Works Progress Administration, all having to do with local, rural, Pennsylvania Dutch culture. First edition, signed by Milhous on verso of ffep, with Julia Carter's name inside a Pennsylvania-Dutch style heart, surmounted by another smaller heart sprouting a yellow tulip, all in red, yellow, and green colored pencil; bound in turquoise publisher's cloth, with the dust jacket bearing the Caldecott sticker, the sticker torn away at the top, the jacket with a large tear, extending from the inside of the front panel, down to the bottom left corner of the front, repaired on the verso with cello-tape without loss, otherwise good with minor chipping to corners and spine ends; winner of the 1951 Caldecott award for children's book illustration.       KATHERINE MILHOUS (1894-1977) VISIT PENNSYLVANIA / WHERE PRE - REVOLUTION COSTUMES STILL SURVIVE. Circa 1936. 24x19 inches, 61x48 1/2 cm. Federal Art Project, Pennsylvania. Condition A: minor restoration in margins. The centerpiece of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal program to help America cope with the ravages of the Depression in the 1930s, was the Works Progress Administration, or WPA. The organization, which took the name Works Projects Administration in 1939, put millions of Americans to work at a time when employment was unlikely to be found anywhere else. Primarily involved in the construction of roads and public buildings, the WPA also had an exceptionally active arts branch. The Federal Art Project, as it was known, was established in 1935 and soon existed in all 48 states. The FAP employed over 5,000 artists who were involved with all different aspects of the arts, including murals, sculpture, paintings, prints and posters. WPA 302, Posters for the People p. 74.

"Milhous was educated at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before joining the FAP. An exhibition of her posters in a FAP gallery attracted the attention of a children's book editor at Charles Scribner's Sons, where she was a staff designer 1944-1946, and launched her successful career as an award-winning children's book illustrator" (WPA p. 164). Her 1950 book The Egg Tree received the American Library Association's Caldecott Medal. This is one of the rarer of her WPA posters. Not in WPA, not in Posters for the People.

In 1732, Conrad Beissel began an experiment in faith in Ephrata, Pennsylvania, a splinter group of the German Baptist Brethren, winning over many followers. The spiritual community which lasted until Beissel's death in 1768, built eight major structures and several smaller ones. In 1941 the site was taken over by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. Posters for the People p. 74.

In 1732 Conrad Beissel began an experiment in faith in Ephrata, Pennsylvania.
