Thomas Rose Miles (fl.1869-1888) Daybreak on the Doggerbank, Trawlers Hove-To oil on canvas signed lower left h:61 w:106 cm. Provenance: Private Collection A dramatic maritime painting, Daybreak on the Doggerbank depicts a trawler, hove-to under shortened sail, riding out a storm on the Dogger Bank. On the horizon are visible two other sailing vessels, heeling in the wind. The sun is just becoming visible, over dark scudding clouds. Located off the Yorkshire coast, the Dogger Bank is known for its shallow waters and sand bars. Storms can whip up large waves, and Miles has depicted the turbulent sea with an accuracy that hints at his having spent much time on sailing vessels. He often painted ships in danger, battling through rough seas, sometimes with lifeboats going to the aid of stricken vessels.
