There he painted with Childe Hassam, William Trost Richards and Arthur Quartley.He is known for his White Mountain landscapes including "Echo Lake at Franconia Notch" and "By the Boathouse At Echo Lake" and also for the seascape "Moonrise at the Isles of Shoals" 1874. After 1877, his landscapes are of New Brunswick where he operated the Saint John Academy of Art between 1885 and 1896.While recognized by his peers as a skilled painter of the era, Miles wasn't a prolific artist. Fewer than a dozen of his signed works are known to exist. His son, Frederick H. C. Miles, 1863-1918, also went on to notoriety as a landscape painter.Miles' work is hung in the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Maine, New Brunswick Museum and also at the Oakland Museum in Oakland, California.He returned to St. Johns in 1877. In the summer of 1874 he visited the salon of the famed poet Celia Thaxter at the Isles of Shoals in Rye, New Hampshire. There he painted with Childe Hassam, William Trost Richards and Arthur Quartley.He is known for his White Mountain landscapes including "Echo Lake at Franconia Notch" and "By the Boathouse At Echo Lake" and also for the seascape "Moonrise at the Isles of Shoals" 1874. After 1877, his landscapes are of New Brunswick where he operated the Saint John Academy of Art between 1885 and 1896.While recognized by his peers as a skilled painter of the era, Miles wasn't a prolific artist. Fewer than a dozen of his signed works are known to exist. His son, Frederick H. C. Miles, 1863-1918, also went on to notoriety as a landscape painter.Miles' work is hung in the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Maine, New Brunswick Museum and also at the Oakland Museum in Oakland, California.He returned to St. Johns in 1877. Two people are being ferried across the lake to the small town at the base of the mountain. Unsigned front but having its original label on reverse with title and artist signature. Housed in its original gilt and gesso decorated liner. An extremely rare view by this listed artist. SIZE: 20" x 40". PROVENANCE: The Estate of Chad Richards, Camden, Maine.
