              Est: €9,500 - €10,000

JOSE MARIA MIJARES (Havana, 1921-2004). "Bird". Oil on canvas. Enclosed certificate María Antonia Cabrera de Mijares. Provenance Doña María Antonia Cabrera de Mijares, widow of the artist. Measurements: 90 x 121 cm; 117 x 150 cm (frame). In this work the autochthonous referents are fused with the formal language learned in Europe to produce works where the characters of the Yoruba pantheon that will populate great part of his later production already appear. The Cuban school of the 20th century was characterized by embracing the European avant-garde and developing, on that basis, a language of its own. This generalized current of artists trained in Europe, who returned to Cuba, meant a great artistic impulse for the country. Thanks to painters who fused their roots and experiences, thus creating a new personal and independent language as can be seen in the representation of this bird. A symbol that was used on several occasions by Mijares, who resorted to the symbolism of the bird as the protagonist of some of his compositions. Mijares, considered one of the great 20th century Cuban and Latin American artists, studied at the San Alejandro National School of Fine Arts in Havana, where he taught. Among his teachers were Romanach, Menocal, Valderrama, Ramon Loy, Caravia and others. It was Mijares himself who recognized that one of his most influential teachers was Ponce, who helped him develop his own style of expression. He was a member of the group Diez Pintores Concretos. Between 1968 and 1973 he was a member of Grupo Gala in Miami, where he settled at the age of 47. He directed Alacrán Azul magazine in Miami. He held his first exhibition at the Havana Lyceum (1947). In the eighties he exhibited in Coral Gables, Florida, where he reiterated his presence. In 1994 the Cuban Museum of Art and Culture of Miami dedicated a retrospective to him. Also the Alfredo Martinez Gallery of Coral Gables would organize an ontological one in 1996. As for group exhibitions, it is worth mentioning his participation in the Venice Biennial of 1952. He is represented at the Cintas Foundation in New York, the Loewe Art Museum, Florida; the Museum of Modern Art of Latin America in Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Mijares' well-deserved recognition came mainly from knowing how to harmonize his universal vocation with the search for an autochthonous Cuban language. His works are characterized by illustrating a personal, expressive artistic style, with a special poetics that values at the same time the versatility of his plastic resources and an exquisite sensitivity in handling different themes. Sometimes starting from a colorful postcubism through which he practically enters into abstraction, but without losing the referential thread. The Florida International University awarded Mijares an honorary doctorate in fine arts in December 2001. In 2002, he opened the Mijares Gallery in Coral Gables, where his latest works were exhibited. Attached certificate María Antonia Cabrera de Mijares.

              Est: $100 - $150

Jose Maria Mijares Fernandez was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1921, in the neighborhood of Santos Surez. He took up drawing as an adolescent and, in 1936, at the age of 16, he entered the San Alejandro School of Fine Arts in Havana on a scholarship. His influences there where of the painters of the Havana School including his professors Ponce, Romanach, Menocal, Valderrama, Ramon Loy, and Caravia. His first major exhibition was in Havana in 1944 that the Capitol Building. There, he won second prize with a painting titled La Alameda, The Boulevard. In 1947, he exhibited his works again, this time at the Lyceum Lawn Tennis Club. He was awarded First Place in the National Paintings Prize, from the IV National Paintings, Engravings and Sculptures Salon, at the age of 29, an event that was an important milestone in his career. His style at this time was figurative but in the 1950s changed to what he described as concrete forms or geometric abstraction. In fact, he became one of the pioneers of geometric abstraction in Cuba. By the late1950s, artists were having a difficult time in Havana, all of the galleries had closed and there were few places to exhibit, so, in 1957, he returned to School of Fine Arts of San Alejandro to teach art, resigning after two years when Fidel Castro came to power. In 1968 he fled to exile in Miami, where he abandoned his geometric style in favor of a fluid decorative one, to signify his emotional state at the abrupt and disheartening but at the same time freeing change in location. In 1998, Mijares was interviewed for the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. Mijares was awarded an honorary Doctorate from Florida International University in 2001. In 2002, he opened the Mijares Gallery in Coral Gables, FL to exhibit his works. One of a kind artwork. Abstract Paintings And Wall Decor Collectibles.

              Est: €7,000 - €8,000

JOSE MARIA MIJARES (Havana, Cuba, 1921 - Miami, USA, 2004). "Concrete Abstraction", c. 1956. Oil on canvas adhered to board. Attached certificate issued by Doña María Cabrera Mijares, widow of the artist. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 51 x 61 cm; 56 x 66 cm (frame). Concrete is a concept that Mijares gave to several of his works. The title was inspired by his membership in the artistic group Diez Pintores concretos, which was active from 1958 to 1961, to which the artists Pedro Carmelo Álvarez López, Wilfredo Arcay Ochandarena, Mario Carreño Morales, Salvador Corratgé, Sandú Darié, Luis Martínez Pedro, Alberto Menocal, José María Mijares, Pedro de Oraá, José Ángel Rosabal Fajardo, Dolores Soldevilla Nieto and Rafael Soriano López belonged. The work reflects an aesthetic language that reflects various avant-garde movements and the translation of the history of art. From a new perspective in which the aesthetic transgression at the hands of José María Mijares means the creation of an image with its own language and personality. Through the use of color, the work offers the viewer a new vitalist aesthetic that merges with a technique close to geometric abstraction that extends over the entire piece in an apparently random way. However, compositionally the artist has managed to create a completely harmonious image where the mastery of color and technique achieve an expressive, vitalistic and dynamic image that captures and creates a dialogue with the viewer. Mijares' artistic production oscillated between a more figurative current and an abstract one in which he developed concepts of kinetic and neoplasticism. However, these compositions acquired the idiosyncrasy of the artist, who endowed them with exceptional color. The work reflects an aesthetic language that reflects various avant-garde movements and the translation of the history of art. Mijares studied at the San Alejandro National School of Fine Arts in Havana, where he taught. He was a member of the group Diez Pintores Concretos. Between 1968 and 1973 he was a member of the Gala Group in Miami, where he settled at the age of 47. He directed the magazine Alacrán Azul in Miami. He is represented at the Cintas Foundation in New York, the Lowe Art Museum, Florida; the Museum of Modern Art of Latin America in Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Mijares' well-deserved recognition came above all for knowing how to harmonize his universal vocation with the search for an autochthonous Cuban language. In this composition, he starts from a colorist postcubism through which he practically enters abstraction, but without losing the referential thread. A preened female figure is still recognizable, as in his "habaneras", but she has been stripped of personal features, transforming her body into a set of gears that animate a beautiful and elegant automaton. Attached is a certificate issued by Mrs. María Cabrera Mijares, widow of the artist.

JOSE MARIA MIJARES (Havana, 1921-2004). Untitled, 1963. Mixed media on masonite. Enclosed certificate of María Cabrales de Mijares. Framed with museum glass. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 55 x 50 cm; 82 x 75 cm (frame). Work that is born from a postcubist language, to become a kind of abstraction. In the image the artist creates a set of gears that form a totemic structure that dominates the center of the composition, placed on a neutral green background. Mijares, considered one of the great artists of 20th century Cuban and Latin American art, studied at the San Alejandro National School of Fine Arts in Havana, where he taught. Sometimes starting from a colorful postcubism through which he practically enters into abstraction but without losing the referential thread. The Florida International University awarded Mijares an honorary doctorate in fine arts in December 2001. In 2002, he opened the Mijares Gallery in Coral Gables, where his latest works were exhibited.
