Chambrelent, Paris DESCRIPTION: “The transformation from bicycle to automobile becomes perfectly obvious in this creation by Misti; the young lady in her pretty veil shows little hesitation in climbing up beside the ‘driver.’ ‘Le Clément’ had as its trademark a fiercely Gallic cockerel. (Gustave) Adolphe Clément, son of a locksmith, opened a bicycle rental shop in the Rue Brunel, and in ten years neither he nor his wife took a single day off. On the advice of F. de Civry, he obtained the exclusive rights to Dunlop tyres, and, looking always ahead, converted to motor cars and set up shop in the Avenue de la Grande Armée. In 1902 his factory in Levallois would be a model establishment. He soon changed his surname to Clément-Bayard, under which he manufactured cars, motorized boats, and dirigibles” (Handlebars/Joystick, p. 94). (Art Nouveau; Automobiles; Bicycles; Animals)

ARTIST: MISTI (Ferdinand Mifliez, 1865-1923) SIZE: 79 1/2 x 51 in./202 x 129.5 cm PRINTER: Imp. Chambrelent, Paris DESCRIPTION: In 1905, Adolphe Clément broke off from the hugely successful Clément Gladiator bicycle and tire company he’d built and set up an auto factory in Mézières, France. He had to obtain permission to name his car after Bayard, the legendary knight who saved the city of Mézières in 1521. And even though the windshield had yet to be invented, the passengers in this image are hunkered down and braced for the ride of their lives. Perhaps the motto beneath Bayard’s statue could also be that of early motoring: “Without fear, without reproach.” This poster was made before Misti established his own printing plant, as the “d’après Misti” connotes the involvement of another uncredited lithographer working from a Misti design. Estimation 15 000 - 20 000 €

But Misti’s promotion for the Lesourd brand actually shows the product being dispensed. And though the vehicle is clearly rendered and absolutely distinct, the implication of speed is overwhelming: a cloud of dust forms, the driver leans into the turn, and the passenger braces for a sharp one. Vercasson, Paris DESCRIPTION: With the horrors of horse-and-buggy transportation haunting the background of this Misti design like the shadowy specters of an age that firmly belongs in the past, a threesome of prescient travelers hit the happy open road aboard their Cottereau machines. Louis Cottereau, born in Angers, was a speed-demon cyclist possessed of an extraordinary will that enabled him to prevail in spite of his short stature. Like Griffon and the Belgian firm Delin, Cottereau used his factory to turn out motorized vehicles as well as bicycles. Misti was a busy poster artist who, between 1894 and 1914, designed more than 100 images—many for bicycles, as well as department stores, railroads, publishing clients, and the Neuilly fair. This is the larger format version. (Art Nouveau; Automobiles)

But the men behind her seem to have trouble catching up, thereby delivering a women’s empowerment message that we wholly appreciate. It’s another humorous vision from Misti, who created over 100 posters between 1894 and 1914. (Art Nouveau; Bicycles)

Halcyon was a daughter of Aeolus who metamorphosed into a seabird that would nest at sea, thereby calming the waves. Condition varies, generally B: replaced losses in margins; extensive repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins and image. A cinematic triptych, in which a harried officer tries to hold back crowds of people eagerly lining a road waiting for something to approach ("What are they waiting for?"). The steepness of the incline is indicated by the roadside sign which states "chevaux renfort," reinforcement horses, a notice that more horses would have to be hitched to a wagon to get it up the hill." In the second image, the bystanders all turn their backs on the viewer to follow the course of the vehicle up the road, ("it can only be . . ."). And in the final poster, once again the harried office tries to hold back the curious throng from getting too close to the vehicle that was able to ascend that hill so easily. Sperry of Cleveland was instrumental in establishing the electric street railway in that city. His early inventions in the 1890s included the electric arc lamp and electricity-operated mining equipment, with which he made a fortune. He built his first electric carriage in 1898 and in 1899 he contracted with the Cleveland Machine Screw Company to manufacture his automobile for him. The resulting Cleveland Car had lamps operated by push button and a single lever for controlling the movement of the automobile. The lever was moved sideways to indicate direction, pushed downward for speed, and pulled upward to remove the current and apply the brakes. The car was ultimately known as the "Sperry” in the United States and was exported under the name "Cleveland Car.” Misti, in this two-sheet poster, shows an evening ride in the electric car beneath a midnight blue sky filled with shooting stars.
