Michiel van Miereveld Sold at Auction Prices

Portrait painter, b. 1566 - d. 1641

Michiel Janszoon van Mierevelt, often abbreviated as Michiel Jansz. and the surname also spelled Miereveld or Miereveldt, (Dutch 1 May 1566 – 27 June 1641) was a Dutch Golden Age painter and draftsman.

Van Mierevelt was born and died in Delft, as a son of a goldsmith, who apprenticed him to the copperplate engraver Hieronymus Wierix. He subsequently became a pupil of Willem Willemz and Augusteyn of Delft, until Anthonie van Montfoort (Houbraken calls him Antony Blokland), who had seen and admired two of Mierevelt's early engravings, Christ and the Samaritan and Judith and Holofernes, invited him to enter his school at Utrecht.

He registered as a member of the Guild of St. Luke in The Hague in 1625. Devoting himself first to still lifes, he eventually took up portraiture, in which he achieved such success that the many commissions entrusted to him necessitated the employment of numerous assistants, by whom hundreds of portraits were turned out in factory fashion. Today over 500 paintings are or have been attributed to him.[6] The works that can with certainty be ascribed to his own brush are remarkable for their sincerity, severe drawing and harmonious color, but comparatively few of the two thousand or more portraits that bear his name are wholly his own handiwork. So great was his reputation that he was patronized by royalty in many countries and acquired great wealth. The king of Sweden and the count palatine of Neuburg presented him with golden chains; Albert VII, Archduke of Austria, at whose court he lived in Delft, gave him a pension; and Charles I vainly endeavoured to induce him to visit the English court.

Though Mierevelt is chiefly known as a portrait painter, he also executed some mythological pieces of minor importance. Many of his portraits have been reproduced in line by the leading Dutch engravers of his time. He died at Delft.

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has the richest collection of Mierevelt's works, chief of them being the portraits of William, Philip William, Maurice, and Frederick Henry of Orange, and of the count palatine Frederick V. At the Mauritshuis in The Hague are the portraits of four princes of the house of Orange, of Frederick V as king of Bohemia, and of Louise de Coligny as a widow. Other portraits by him are at nearly all the leading continental galleries, notably at Brunswick (3), Gotha (2), Schwerin (3), Munich (2), Paris (Louvre, 3), Dresden (4), Berlin (2), and Darmstadt (3). The town hall of Delft also has numerous examples of his work.

FOLLOWER OF MICHIEL VAN MIEREVELDT (1566-1641) PORTRAIT OF THE STADTHOLDER PRINCE MAURITS OF ORANGE-NASSAU (1567-1625) Oil on canvas Image size: 120 x 100cm. (47 x 39in.) Framed size: 140 x 114cm. (55 x 44in.) Maurits spent his youth in Dillenburg, Nassau, and studied in Heidelberg and Leiden. In 1585, after the death of his father, William the Silent, Maurits became stadholder of Holland Zeeland, as well as stadtholder of Utrecht, Guelders and Overijssel in 1590, and of Groningen in 1620. During his role as Captain-General and Admiral of the Union, Maurits organized the Dutch rebellion against Spain. His leadership resulted in a coherent and successful revolt against Spain, earning him the reputation as a formidable military strategist. Under his leadership and in cooperation with the Land~s Advocate of Holland, Johan Van Oldenbarnevelt, the Dutch States Army achieved many victories and drove the Spanish forces out of the north and east of the Republic. During the Twelve Years Truce, Maurits set out to revise and transform the classical doctrines of Vegetius and led the way for new European forms of armament and drill. After the Truce, Maurits failed to achieve the victories he accomplished in his youth. He died with no legitimate heir. The original portrait of Prince Maurits is currently held at the Prinsenhof in Delft. His brother, Frederick Henry, succeeded as stadtholder. The familial line is very much evident in the brothers~ portraiture, and the similarities between the two portraits are startling. The portrait of Frederick Henry is currently held by the Rijksmuseum (SK-A-254) and is attributed to the studio of Michiel Jansz van Mierevelt, circa 1632. The ruff worn by Maurits in his portrait, and the rounder form of the pauldrons indicates that the sitter is seen as representing an earlier fashion, than that found in the Rijksmueseum~s portrait of Frederick Henry, which coincides with the line of succession.

Dated in the centre left: 1640 Jacob Willemsz. Delff was a son of the painter Willem Jacobszoon Delff (1580-1638) and grandson of the painter Michiel van Mierevelt (1567-1641), in whose workshop he was also trained. After his death he continued the flourishing business. Among the last portraits van Mierevelt painted were those of Paulus Teding van Berkhout and his wife Jacomina van der Vorst. Both portraits exist in two versions. The present work, whose counterpart is housed in a private collection in Antwerp, is attributed to the artist's studio. The back of this portrait bears the name of the sitter, her husband and his profession. The inscription reads: "eerste Raeden was Meester van de Rekeningen of the Domeinen van Holland en West Friesland". The piece is registered in the database of the RKD under the no. 148039.

Oil on Board Painting Attributed to Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt 1567-1641 Delft Portrait of a gentleman, bust-length, in armour, with a lace collar Size: 4 1/4 x 3 3/8 in. (10.8 x 8.7 cm.) Frame: 11 3/4 x 9 1/2 in. Michiel Janszoon van Mierevelt, often abbreviated as Michiel Jansz. and the surname also spelled Miereveld or Miereveldt, (Dutch pronunciation: [mi?il j?ns v?n mir?v?lt]; 1 May 1566 – 27 June 1641) was a Dutch Golden Age painter and draftsman. Today over 500 paintings are or have been attributed to him. The works that can with certainty be ascribed to his own brush are remarkable for their sincerity, severe drawing and harmonious color, but comparatively few of the two thousand or more portraits that bear his name are wholly his own handiwork.

Today over 500 paintings are or have been attributed to him. The works that can with certainty be ascribed to his own brush are remarkable for their sincerity, severe drawing and harmonious color, but comparatively few of the two thousand or more portraits that bear his name are wholly his own handiwork.
