        Nov. 16, 2024

        Rolex - Cellini King Midas

        Est: €2,000 - €3,500

A rare vintage Geneva "cult" wristwatch "King Midas Ref. 4017/11, Cal. 1600, Case No. 4002163, Dimensions 28 x 27 mm, circa 1975, Origin Schweiz, original clasp Case: 18 K gold, push back with marking 4017/11. Dial: Gilt Sigma-Dial. Movm.: Manual. Gérald Genta designed the revolutionary King Midas for Rolex in the 1960s. The design is inspired by geometric pattern from ancient Greece. The name "King Midas" comes from Greek mythology, where King Midas is remembered for his ability to turn everything he touched with his left hand into pure gold. The story goes that the King Midasis fitted with a crown on the left while the watch is worn on the right wrist. The watch was originally produced in three very small series only. It was advertised as the heaviest gold watch that money can buy. Other references were developed once the Midas collection was integrated in the Cellini range. The King Midas achieved extra fame when it was worn by Elvis Presley and John Wayne. The King Midas bears all the marks that make a watch a coveted collector’s piece: a brand rich in tradition, a renowned designer, a revolutionary appearance, precious materials and an irresistible look. This timepiece dating from 1975 comes in an assymetric pentagonal gold case and is in excellent condition with only very slight signs of wear. The dial is immaculate, the gold baton hands have aquired a rainbow-coloured patina and go perfectly with the unusual case.

Rolex. Rare and Highly Special, Cellini King Midas, Wristwatch in Yellow Gold, With Diamond Set Case, Reference 4609

        Est: €12,000 - €24,000

Rolex. Rare and Highly Special, Cellini King Midas, Wristwatch in Yellow Gold, With Diamond Set Case, Reference 4609 Model: King Midas Reference: 4609 Case Material: Yellow Gold and Diamonds Bracelet Material: Yellow Gold Year: 1976 Movement: Manual Caliber: 651 Case N°: N° 3071, 4 207 616 Dimensions: 27 × 26 mm Signed: Dial, Movement and Case Rolex “King Midas” was designed by the legendary Gerald Genta long before he came to prominence with Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak and Patek Philippe’s Nautilus. Introduced in 1962, it was produced through the 1960s before it was absorbed into the Cellini line-up from 1972. The Midas models were characterized by their asymmetrical shape that was inspired by the Pantheon of the Gods and the left-handed winding crown. Among the most renown exponent of the Cellini family of King Midas, one is surely the reference 4609 here offered. This example can for sure be considered as one of the nicest, most rare and precious ever realized by the brand: the yellow gold is very fresh with crisp and deep hallmarks engraved on the back while the reference and number on the integrated yellow-gold bracelet. The bezel/front face has been embellished with a full diamond-set making this reference definelty lavish. The dial is simple but very nice, matching the whole case with a champagne color and is completed by yellow-gold baton hands. The winding crown is at 9 o’clock and the caliber is the famous 651 covered with a yellow gold screwed-down case back. Charismatic, precious and with an historically important background, this watch is the utmost in understated elegance. Estimate € 12000 - 24000

Rolex. Very Well Preserved and Attractive, King Midas, Wristwatch in Yellow Gold, Diamond-Set Bezel and Lapis Lazuli Dial, With Box, Reference 4611

        Est: €10,000 - €20,000

Rolex. Very Well Preserved and Attractive, King Midas, Wristwatch in Yellow Gold, Diamond-Set Bezel and Lapis Lazuli Dial, With Box, Reference 4611 Model: King Midas Reference: 4611 Case Material: Yellow Gold and Diamonds Bracelet Material: Yellow Gold Year: 1976 Movement: Manual Caliber: 650 Case N°: N° 3805, 4 266 906 Dimensions: 24 × 33 mm Signed: Dial, Movement and Case Accessories: Box and Booklet In the late 1960s, Rolex decided to entrust the creation of a new model to a young and ambitious designer. The name chosen for this model was King Midas, an iconic figure from Greek mythology with the ability to turn everything he touched into gold. Today, about 60 years later, this name almost sounds like a prophecy for the future of that young designer, capable of transforming each of his creations into gold for the various watch brands. The name of that designer is, of course, Gerald Genta. The first example of Midas was the ref. 9630 and was produced in a limited edition of 1000 examples, followed by ref. 3580, also produced in a limited series. The cases were made from a block of 18K yellow or white gold, and weighed between 150 and 200 grams depending on the model. At the time, the King Midas was Rolex’s most expensive model and considered the heaviest gold wristwatch on the market. Manufactured with an unusual asymmetrical square case design this watch has been also explored with other reference and designs, such as the reference 4611, exactly like this lot. The 4611 is one of the most exceptional amongst all King Midas references. Available in the second half of the 1970s, it featured a symmetrical case with a sumptuous diamond setting together with a hard stone dial. The yellow-gold case is very nicely preserved with three rows of factory-set diamonds on the top and bottom of the case and an integrated bracelet with horizontal grooves and concealed clasp. The incredibly beautiful dial has been manufactured in lapis lazuli, one of the most appreciated hard stones available on the horology market and one of the most fragile. The electric color of the dial is complemented by a yellow gold applied Rolex logo, baton gold hands, and a discreet “ΜΙΔΑΣ” (Greek for Midas) signature at 6 o’clock. Estimate € 10000 - 20000

Rolex. Precious and Massive, King Midas, Wristwatch in White Gold, With Black Roman Numbers Dial, Reference 4316

        Est: €12,000 - €24,000

Rolex. Precious and Massive, King Midas, Wristwatch in White Gold, With Black Roman Numbers Dial, Reference 4316 Model: King Midas Reference: 4316 Case Material: White Gold Bracelet Material: White Gold Year: 1976 Movement: Manual Caliber: 651 Case N°: 4 276 123 N° 3964 Dimensions: 23 mm Signed: Dial, Movement and Case The Rolex Midas watches are very unusual and yet iconic in design and are universally known to be lavish and equipped with heavy bracelets. Mida’s style is absolutely unique and doesn’t look like anything from the Oyster collection. The celebrated “Midas” series was designed by the renowned Gérald Genta and launched in the late 1960s with the ref. 9630 in a limited edition of 1000 examples followed by ref. 3580, also produced in a limited series. The cases were made from a block of 18K yellow or white gold and, at the moment of its creation, was Rolex’s most expensive model and considered the heaviest gold wristwatch on the market. It is considered to be one of the favorites among the stars: in James Bond’s “The Man with the Golden Gun” (1974), Christopher Lee, who played the villain Francisco Scaramanga, used to wear a King Midas. But the most famous King Midas was owned by the King of rock ’n’ roll, Elvis Presley who used to wear a ref. 9630 while performing six shows at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 1970. The example here offered is a valuable example of reference 4316, fully realized in 18 kt white gold and preserved in great conditions. Very solid and precious, this watch is equipped with satin silvered, black Roman indexes dial. The present lot fashions in incredible style and certainly is the perfect fit for the forthright collector of showstopper timepieces. Estimate € 12000 - 24000
