EDUARD MICUS (Germany, 1925 - Ibiza, 2000). Untitled. 1985. Acrylic on paper. Signed in the lower corner. Measurements: 29 x 39 cm; 51 x 65 cm (frame). Eduard Micus was a German painter. He came to art in 1943 and 1944 through the Marburg painter and woodcutter Reinhard Schmidhagen (1914-1945). Schmidhagen was one of the artists who kept in touch with the German resistance against National Socialism. Micus studied with Willi Baumeister at the Art Academy in Stuttgart from 1948 to 1952. In 1952 he created his first paintings divided by a line, and from 1962 he divided his paintings, which he called "Coudragen", by a seam. In 1962 he participated in the exhibition Geste, Raum, Struktur in der neuen deutschen Malerei at the Frankfurter Kunstverein and in 1963 in the exhibition Absolute Farbe - Avantgart 63 at the Städtisches Museum Simeonstift in Trier. Micus was then living in Ebenhausen. In 1967 he was one of the German participants in the 6th San Marino Biennale, together with Gerhard Richter and Günther Uecker, among others. From 1965 to 1970, Eduard Micus was a member of the SYN group of artists, which represented the idea of holistic art. In 1965, he participated with the group in a demonstration organized by its members (among them Bernd Berner, Rolf-Gunter Dienst and Klaus Jürgen-Fischer) as a polemic against the "spirit of German art criticism" in front of the Galerie Baier in Mainz. In 1979, Eduard Micus was a member of the group led by Wolfgang Ker. In 1979, Eduard Micus participated in the exhibition "Hommage à Baumeister", curated by Wolfgang Kermer at the Stuttgart Academy. From 1982 onwards, he made collages of colored paper on canvas and pursued the dissolution of panel painting. From 1989 onwards, he worked with wood and painted material paintings. Works by the artist are in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art of Eivissa/Ibiza. Eduard Micus was a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund.

A moving, active side is thus contrasted by a meditative side, typical for the artist’s works in the 1960s. Each sheet is placed loose between a covering plastic foil and a strong black cardboard. Each sheet is signed, dated and numbered ‘Micus 67 17/30’, three on the lower right and three on the lower left. The woodcutter Reinhard Schmid Hagen sparked his interest in art. From 1948 to 1952 Micus studied under Willi Baumeister at the Art Academy in Stuttgart. He began to part his paintings into two halves, first by a line, later on with a seam in the canvas. From 1982 on Micus designed paper collages on canvas, with which he explored the disintegration of panel painting, in 1989, he then dealt with woodwork and material images. The woodcutter Reinhard Schmid Hagen sparked his interest in art. From 1948 to 1952 Micus studied under Willi Baumeister at the Art Academy in Stuttgart. He began to part his paintings into two halves, first by a line, later on with a seam in the canvas. From 1982 on Micus designed paper collages on canvas, with which he explored the disintegration of panel painting, in 1989, he then dealt with woodwork and material images. Micus' coudrages are painted paper collages on fabric of mural size that he separates in the middle with a seam. While the left half remains empty, the right half is filled with dancing squares. The left half has got a meditative effect on the right half, creating tension-filled works. The work is signed and dated lower right in pencil 'Micus 89'. It is in good condition, the creased surface is intended. At these creased areas singularly uprising color clods visible with partly slight loss of paint. The work has got slight vertical folding lines. The dimensions are 202 x 242 cm. Exhibition The painting was exhibited in 1988 in a retrospective of the work of Eduard Micus at the Kunsthalle Mannheim Eduard Micus (1925-2000) Eduard Micus felt attracted to art initially through the Marburg based painter and woodcutter Reinhard Schmidhagen. He met Schmidhagen in the years 1943 and 1944 and Micus decided in 1948 to attend the Academy of Arts in Stuttgart. He studied there until 1921 amongst others under Willi Baumeister. He began creating first works of art that were divided by lines. Since 1962, he created his so-called 'Coudrages', which he separated in the center with a seam. In 1967, he took part at the Biennale in San Marino together with Gerhard Richter and Günther Uecker. He was a member of the artist group SYN. The artist lived and worked since 1971 in Ibiza.
