According to MICHELANGELO BUONARROTI (Caprese Michelangelo, 1475 - Rome, 1564) - Christ Crucified

            Est: €30,000 - €50,000

Gilt bronze with a loincloth and silver corners on the cross. Measurements: 22 x 5 x 22 cm (Christ), 52 x 6 x 30 cm (total). Made by the Sevillian silversmith Juan Baptista Franconio in the 16th century from a cast by Michelangelo Buonarroti. Francisco Pacheco was the first to document these copies in his work Arte de la pintura, published after his death in 1649. According to Pacheco, an Italian goldsmith established in Seville, Juan Bautista Franconio, brought to Spain a 30 cm bronze version that faithfully replicated a model by Michelangelo. In 1600, Pacheco painted the first of these copies and gave it as a gift to Pablo de Céspedes, a cleric at the Córdoba Cathedral. What fascinated Pacheco most about this model, created by Michelangelo and reproduced by Franconio, was that it followed the vision of St. Bridget of Sweden, in which Christ is nailed to the cross with four nails and the left foot superimposed on the right. This representation influenced prominent sculptors, such as Juan Martínez Montañés in Seville. The figure of Christ, serene and pure, evokes Michelangelo's early creations, such as the wooden Christ in Santo Spirito, Florence, or the Dead Christ in the Entombment at the National Gallery of Art in London. In his later years, Michelangelo devoted himself to transmitting divine love through the image of the crucified Christ. Michelangelo developed the anatomy of Christ's body in a famous drawing preserved in the Teylers Museum in Haarlem, which shows a profile without the left arm. Another detailed drawing in the Royal Collection at Windsor is quite close to the model that inspired these sculptures. These versions circulated mainly in Spain, made in both bronze and silver, and there is still debate about whether some were created in Rome or on Spanish soil. In his later years, Vasari reports that Michelangelo spent time working on a small-format version of Christ crucified. The unfinished Christ, still preserved in the Casa Buonarrotti, and a sketch painted on the back of a sonnet in the Vatican Apostolic Library, are evidence of these efforts. Most of these works were replicated by bronzeworkers and goldsmiths in series, the first being made between 1540 and 1560 in the workshops of Guglielmo della Porta and Sebastiano Torrigiani. Thanks to these bronze reproductions, a renewing image of Christ was made known, in keeping with Michelangelo’s vision. An export permit issued in 2024 is included.

            Sep. 08, 2022

16th C. French Oak "Romayne" Panel of Male Portrait

            Est: $700 - $1,050

Europe, France, Renaissance to Baroque Period, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. An impressive oak "Romayne" panel hand-carved to display the portrait of a bearded man - who interestingly resembles the famed Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti (Italian, 1475 to 1564) - in relief, all enveloped in a rich chocolate brown finish. Surrounded by a decorative wreath, the gentleman looks right, presenting a profile with a protruding forehead, deep-set eyes, a crooked nose, prominent cheek bones, a risen temple, and a petite mouth with a thick lower lip engulfed in a lengthy moustache and long beard. A bushy coiffure crowns his head as his chest is covered by a robe draped over a collared tunic. Swirling vegetal ornaments surround the central tondo. Size: 7.9" W x 10.2" H (20.1 cm x 25.9 cm) Though the exact date and identity of this carving is unknown, the portrait does bear a striking likeness to those of Michelangelo, particularly the engraving by Giulio Bonasone (Italian, 1498 to after 1574) found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This gentleman also matches contemporary descriptions we have of the artist, showing a protuberant forehead, a contorted nose, petite eyes, an elevated temple, high cheekbones, a fleshy lower lip, thin to no eyebrows, a moustache, and a beard. Romayne refers to the decoration of furniture and architecture with carved medallions, knobs, or finial in the form of human or grotesque heads. Romayne work was especially popular in western Europe during the Renaissance and Early Modern period. Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Alison Barker collection, United Kingdom, 1951 to 2021 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Feb. 21, 2019

16th C. Ghisi Engraving - Persian Sibyl by Michelangelo

            Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Engraver Giorgio Mantovano Ghisi (Italian, Mantua, ca. 1520-1582 Mantua) after Michelangelo Buonarroti (Italian, Caprese 1475-1564 Rome), "The Persicha Sibyl; from series of Prophets and Sibyls in the Sistine Chapel" (also Persian Sibl). Publisher: Nicolaus van Aelst (Flemish, Brussels 1526-1613, Rome). Ca. early 1570s CE - a 3rd or 4th state (of 5). A strong impression printed on fine laid paper with the watermark of an "anchor in a circle" - very close to Briquet #471, dated to 1527. Giorgio Ghisi’s detailed renderings, including this engraving of the Persian Sibyl, helped to make Michelangelo’s frescoes among the best-known High Renaissance monuments, despite the fact that they were difficult to access. Since the Sistine Chapel ceiling was too large to include on one sheet, Ghisi produced a series of oversize engravings of five sibyls and seven prophets. A strong impression of the Eritrean Sibyl sold for $7,000 at Sotheby's twenty years ago (see below). An incredibly engraving that rarely comes available! Size: sheet measures ~ 21.75" L x 16.875" W (55.2 cm x 42.9 cm) Inscription: Inscribed in image on a tablet at center: "PERSICHA"; lower left: ".G.MAF. 1540 / Nic.o van aelst for. Romae" See the Metropolitan Museum of Art's example [Accession Number 26.70.3 (3)] - https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/367701 Please notice that the Met example's impression seems to be of a similar quality to our example. The Met example is 2nd state; our example is certainly comparable and definitely dates to the 16th century according to an expert with whom we consulted. Note that Giorgio Mantovano Ghisi's engraving of Michelangelo's "The Eritirean Sibyl", ca. 1570 sold for $7,000 at Sotheby's, New York, 11 May 1995, Lot 56. Catalogue Raisonne: Boorsch, Lewis and Lewis 159.47.ii; Bellini 1979, p. 136; Bellini 1998, 85.17.ii; Bartsch XV.393.19; TIB 31[15], 55.19 As explained by Boorsch (in Boorsch, Lewis and Lewis 1985, p. 164) the dates of 1540 and 1549 engraved on some of the plates from the series is false. The plates should rather be dated to the early 1570s. Watermark of "anchor in a circle" may be found in Charles Molse Briquet, "Les Filigranes: Dictionnaire Historique Des Marques De Papier Des Leur Apparition Vers 1282 Jusqu'uen 1600" - illustrated in figures 471 and 472, descriptions on pp. 454-478. As noted, the watermark on the fine laid paper of this engraving is very close to #471 which is dated to 1527. For further information: Adam von Bartsch Le Peintre graveur. Tile Mural, Libyan Sybil from Sistine Chapel, 20th

            Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475-1564), universally known simply as Michelangelo, was arguably the greatest artist of all time. His sculpture of David is probably the most famous sculpture in the world and his frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel are possibly man’s greatest achievement in the history of painting. Despite his distaste for painting, he reluctantly accepted the commission of this arduous project from Pope Julius II in 1508. Painted between 1508 and 1512, the Sistine Chapel ceiling features 343 figures within more than 5000 square feet of painted ceiling. Contrary to popular belief, Michelangelo did not paint the ceiling while laying on his back. Holes were drilled into the walls above the windows in the room from which brackets were placed to support a large flat scaffold on which he stood to paint. This six-tile mural from the first half of the 20th century, depicts Michelangelo’s magnificent Libyan Sibyl, Phemonoe, the daughter of Zeus and Poseidon’s daughter, Lamia. Phemonoe foretold the “coming of the day when that which is hidden shall be revealed”. Each of the 6 tiles are 12? x 12?, with the full image 36? x 24?. 1st half, 20th century

After Michelangelo Buonarroti , a cast iron model of Giuliano de' Medici

            Est: £6,000 - £8,000

After Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475 ~ 1564), a cast iron model of Giuliano de' Medici, late 19th century, portrayed in armour and seated, his head turned to sinister, the rectangular section base stamped for the Val d'Osne Foundry, 92cm high, 35cm wide Michelangelo created the tomb of Giuliano de' Medici for the Medici Chapel of San Lorenzo in Florence between 1520 and 1534. It is widely held to be one of Michelangelo's greatest achievements The pose of the central figure on the tomb of Giuliano de' Medici, arms resting at his sides and legs comfortably apart, and its open composition suggest a contented duke, generous in both mind and spirit and at ease with himself. Light plays freely on his serene face, yet the figure is lacking in energy and seems to wilt under the burden of the Roman armour. Michelangelo did not intend for this sculpture, nor that of Lorenzo, to be a recognizable portrait of the duke, but instead an ideological tribute through its enhanced beauty and dignity
