Frame dimensions: 20 ¼ x 22 in. (51.4 x 55.9 cm.) Very good condition Estimate $5,000-$7,000 Robert Michel (German, 1897-1983) Robert Michel was born 1897 in Vockenhausen near Frankfurt. At the outbreak of World War I he became an air pilot, but after a crash in 1917 he was sent to a military hospital in Weimar. That year he enrolled at the Hochschule für Bildende Kunst in Weimar, soon to become part of the Bauhaus, where he met Ella Bergmann, whom he married in 1919, and who adopted the surname Bergmann-Michel. After producing drawings and woodcuts using circles and other geometrical elements, he turned to collage in 1918. The early works incorporated collage elements into a painted and drawn design, with overtly mechanical images such as cogs, dials and wheels and often words. In 1918 he took a studio of his own in Weimar and in 1919 was in contact with the newly founded Bauhaus. Though the Bauhaus quickly became interested in mechanical images, Michel found Gropius too doctrinaire and so refrained from joining. In 1920 he left Weimar for Vockenhausen, which remained his home until shortly before his death in 1983. Condition In overall good condition, not examined out of frame. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

        ROBERT MICHEL 1897-1983

        Est: $2,500 - $3,500

DREI measurements 13 1/4 by 14 3/4 in. alternate measurements 33.7 by 37.5 cm. signed RM and inscribed with the title and date 1969, upper left; inscribed again extensively with rubber stamp and text on the reverse mixed media collage NOTE A 50-year retrospective (1917-1967) was held at the Waddell Gallery, New York, March-April 1968. In the introduction to the exhibition catalogue, A.L. Chanin wrote: "Robert Michel never took himself one hundred per cent seriously. He lived after all, during the heyday of Dada, and the sardonic humor of the movement colored much of his work. His meticulously lettered captions are droll mixtures of German and English, and he even took to rubber stamping the back of each picture with an imitation postmark that proclaimed "Heimatmuseum of Modern Art" (roughly, The Local Modern Museum)."
