Biography from the Archives of askART: This biography was written by the Martin-Zambito Fine Art Gallery, Seattle, WA: Anne Michalov was been a resident of the Northwest for over 50 years. Born and raised in Illinois, she came to the Northwest because of her husband's military service. In the early 1940's, she taught at the WPA Art Center in Spokane and lived briefly in Seattle during that period. After studying at the Chicago Art Institute in the 1920's, she continued to produce paintings and lithographs and became employed by the various Federal Art Projects during the Depression. In Chicago, she produced a fine body of work in lithography as well as paintings and public murals. Her works have been included in national and regional exhibitions including the 1939 New York World's Fair, Chicago Art Institute, 1939 Great Lakes Exhibition, Portland Art Museum and several others. Her works are included in numerous private and public collections including the Library of Congress, Newark Art Museum, University of Michigan Museum of Art, Portland Art Museum, and the Chicago Art Institute. Michalov's lithographs are illustrated in the following publications:The Federal Art Project - American Prints From The 1930's, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; American Prints in the Collection of the Library of Congress, Karen F. Beall; American Art Today: The New York World's Fair, 1939 catalogue, reprinted in 1987; and Encyclopedia of Women Artists of the American West by Phil Kovinick, University of Texas Press.

      WPA ARTIST ANNE MICHALOV (1904-2001) 1930s LITHOGR

      Signed lower right, titled 'Mudge's Farm' lower left, image size 9.75 x 14, frame measures 17 x 21 inches, unknown low number edition. Anne Michalov was born in a small mining town in Grundy County Illinois. She made it from there to the Art Institute of Chicago where she studied in the 1920s. During the 1930s she exhibited in shows around Chicago and the upper Midwest and was granted work and commissions under the Federal Art Project. As a WPA artist she produced prints, at least one mural and, after relocating to Spokane, Washington with her husband in the early 1940s, taught at the WPA Art Center there. She was fortunate to be a part of the WPA. Few women artists found work in the Federal Art Project. At its height in 1938, only 13.5% of WPA employees were women. Very good clean condition. Not laid down, acid free archival matting and framing.
