Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1951, James Michalopoulos studied political economy at Bowdoin College and worked for a food coop in Maine before becoming an artist. In his mid-twenties he moved to New Orleans, where he worked as an itinerant street artist, producing Michalopoulos paintings and prints for an interested public. He then studied fine arts at the University of New Orleans and the New Orleans Academy of Fine Art. He has been named Official Artist of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on six occasions.
