Sonia Handelman Meyer Art for Sale at Auction

b. 1920 -

Sonia Meyer began her photographic career when she received a camera as a graduation gift. In the 1940s she became a member of the Photo League of New York, which gave her access to lessons, lectures, and exhibitions. Meyer travelled around the city, taking evocative, atmospheric photographs of the people and locations of the bustling city, visiting places such as the Hebrew Immigration Aid Society; two of the photographs presented here are of families at the HIAS. Meyer's work was included in the 1949 exhibition This is the Photo League . The closure of the League in 1951 coincided with Meyer's marriage; she soon moved out of the city and her early work was stored away in boxes. While several of her photographs were included in the 1978 exhibition This Was the Photo League , it was not until 2002 that her son encouraged her to revisit her photography and Meyer began to once again exhibit her work.
