Date: 1828 Description: With etching by Heinrich Meyer illustrating how part of the Hülfsgesellschaft am Fluss group helps a needy family in front of the city skyline of Zurich. The brochure consists of an etching and a 12-page text. The Hülfsgesellschaft was founded in 1799. When the French invaded Switzerland, Zurich became a theatre of war between the French, Austrians and Russians. The population suffered from "barbarism, extortion and devastation, especially in the countryside. The city doctor Johann Caspar Hirzel, together with 15 other Zurich citizens from the former ruling families, founded the Hülfsgesellschaft to alleviate the hardship by handing out clothes and food, as well as distributing soup.
