Beech, cotton, metal Germany, 1925/26 Hannes Meyer (1889-1954) – Swiss architect, town planner and photographer, director of the Bauhaus Two folding chairs from the ‘co-op interieur’ Foldable, strutted wooden frame with 4 square legs High, open and slightly protruding armrests Back rest and seat with white-yellow-striped fabric, riveted Seats additionally fortified with two belts from the underneath Dimensions: 89.6 x 51 x 53 cm Seat heights: c. 43 cm Pair of folding chairs in the Bauhaus-design as manifests of the 1920s new style of living Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 3,400 Euro After Hannes Meyer had become director of the Bauhaus, he introduced the idea of a collective creative process, the so-called ‘co-principle’, and attuned teaching and workshops, planning and architecture to the collective and its needs. Offered pair of chairs represents the conceptual expression of the desire for maximum economy in form, construction and materials, which are part of the co-op idea. The chairs were originally designed with other co-op furniture for a room in Meyers House – the ‘co-op interieur’ with folding chair to the wall, gramophone and bedstead. Condition: The two chairs are in an optically good condition showing heavier signs of age and wear. The left leg of one chair is wormy (inactive) at the lower part. The lower left strut shows a shake. The cover has been renewed. The dimensions of the chairs are each 89.6 x 51 x 53 cm, the seat heights measure c. 43 cm. Hannes Meyer (1889-1954) Hannes Meyer was born in Basel, trained as mason in 1905 and absolved an apprenticeship as an architectural draftsman and construction supervisor in Basel. Subsequently he attended courses at the Industrial School in Basel. In 1910 he started working for the architectural firm of Albert Froelich in Berlin and later joined Johann Emil Schaudt’s office. At the same time he attended several evening classes at the School of Applied Arts. Before he started working as an independent architect in Basel in 1919, he spent two years in England and was Georg Metzendorf’s assistant in Munich. In 1927 Meyer was appointed to the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he was offered a job as master architect. One year later, he becomes director as successor to Walter Gropius. However, due to political reasons Meyer was dismissed in 1930, since he was regarded as a social democrat and had campaigned for the affordability of Bauhaus products for everyone. Accompanied by some students and employees, Meyer moved to Moscow where he became university professor. In 1936 Meyer returned to Switzerland and from there moved to Mexico in in 1939, where he worked as director of the newly founded Institute of Urban Design and Planning in Mexico City. After his return to Switzerland in 1949 he began publishing architectural literature. Meyer primarily dealt with housing construction and analyzed the functional and psychological factors of a floor plan to reduce the architecture to the formula ‘function x economy’. Among the important works of Hans Meyer are the housing cooperative Freidorf near Basel (1919/21), the Trade Union School in Bernau bei Berlin (1928-30) and the children's home in Mümliswil, Solothurn (1938-39).
