HARMEN MEURS* (Wangen 1891 - 1964 Speude/Ermelo) Lady with pearls, 1928 oil/canvas, 115,5 x 90 cm signed Harmen Meurs, dated 1928 verso inscribed Portret Mevr. J. v. G. Harmen Meurs ESTIMATE € 12000 - 20000 STARTING PRICE € 12000 From 1909 to 1911, the painter Hermanus Meurs, known as Harmen, studied at the State School of Applied Arts and the Reich Academy in Amsterdam. In the coming years v. a. Still lifes, landscapes and rural scenes. Meurs' painting style changed through stays in France, where he was inspired by Expressionism. In 1918 he joined the artists' association "De Onafhankelijken" (The Independents; Maurits de Groot, Jan de Boer, Raoul Martinez, Kees Heynsius, Henri Boot, Dirk Berend Nanninga, Jan Visser). The DADA evening with Kurt Schwitters and Theo van Doesburg organized by "De Onafhankelijken" in 1922 received a lot of attention. In 1933 his works were not accepted for the "Berlin Art Exhibition"; In Amsterdam, too, the painting "Tijdebeeld 1933-34", which depicts a Jew having the swastika rammed into his chest in the midst of a group of Hitler's supporters, was withdrawn for political reasons. "De Onafhankelijken" no longer accepted Harmen Meurs' works, so Meurs canceled his membership in 1934. Social themes became increasingly important in his work. Because of his refusal to become a member of the Reichskulturkammer, Meurs became isolated. He increasingly dealt with anti-war themes, such as in the series “Shot on the run”. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked °), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax of 13%, for photographys 20%, is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.

In the 20s and 30s of the twentieth century, he found himself in the bustling artistic scene of Amsterdam, where he became a celebrated and socially engaged artist. Meurs made this beautiful portrait of cellist Thomas Canivez. In a review of his retrospective exhibition of 1928 at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the following statement is made about this work: "Meurs possesses a flawless painting that certainly has a soothing effect and which, for example, also makes the two large canvases from a previous period, the portrait of the cellist Thomas Canivez and 'Naakt in bad', a joy for the eye." * Condition report available upon request

Harmen Hermanus MEURS (Dutch, born Wageningen 1891 - died Ermelo 1964) “Spanish Farmer's Woman with Straw Hat“ Oil on panel, Artist information: Harmen Hermanus Meurs was the fourth child of a wealthy merchant of rugs and furniture. In his childhood, he had his first painting lessons. His tutors were Louis Rademakers and August Felice. He could not wish to have a better education, because both these artists learnt him the importance of a perfect command of his craft. Meurs studied at the Royal School for Applied Arts in Amsterdam and did an additional study of one year at the Amsterdam Royal Academy. Once he had completed his studies, he mainly painted still lives, landscapes and scenes of life at the farm. Although in general his colouring is relatively light, his expression is dominantly dramatic. During his stays in France between 1915 and 1920, he painted many scenes of town life and figures, where the influences of expressionism and cubism are clearly perceptible in his work. He took part in exhibitions with contemporary painters, e.g. Jan Toorop, Kees van Dongen and Gustave de Smet. Lit.: Dutch Art Lexicon P. Scheen, 1969, vol.2, page 43 - 44
