      Est: €600 - €900

Ludwig Metz (1822 Mainz - 1886 Frankfurt am Main), In the cloister of the Benedictine abbey of Kloster Maria Laach, 1842, Watercolor Technique: Watercolor and Pen Drawing on paper Size: 20,6 x 13,9 cm | 8 x 5 1/2 in Inscription: top inscribed, dated and signed by the artist Condition: Perfect condition. Traces of an old mounting on the verso in the corners of the sheet. Minimal traces of impact along the edges. The colouring has been freshly preserved. Description: The colonnade around the paradise garden of the Romanesque church Maria Laach is a place of peace. Likewise, as our watercolour suggests, the strong masonry with the richly decorated Romanesque capitals of the so-called "Samson Master" provides shade and a pleasant coolness even in the greatest summer heat. Our representation also conveys the impression of the contrasting pair of light and shadow as well as heat and coolness through the dark design of the cloister and the bright sunshine that shines in through the window from the little garden of paradise. Keywords: Romanticism, Architecture, Germany, Religion
