After METSU (*1629), Lady reading a letter (around 1664), 1905, Photogravure

        Est: €150 - €200

After Gabriel Metsu (1629 Leiden - before 1667 Amsterdam): The Letter - Lady Reading a Letter, (c 1664), National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, from a catalogue of masterpieces, 1905, Photogravure Technique: Photogravure on Paper Date: 1905 Description: Conversation piece. A wealthily dressed lady sitting at the window, absorbedly reading a letter. Next to her, her maid is contemplating a seascape on the wall. Here a dialogue seems to be taking place between two of Metsu's paintings. The scene of the lady reading a letter is the counterpart to the depiction of the young man writing a letter, which we also offer in our catalogue. From the catalogue: Masterpieces of Painting. Old Masters. Reproductions in Photogravure. With a preface and accompanying text by Wilhelm Bode and Fritz Knapp, Berlin 1905. Please note further offers from the Masterpieces catalogue in our online shop. The photogravure is accompanied by the corresponding picture text by Wilhelm Bode on an additional sheet. Gabriel Metsu, A Woman Scouring a Pan

        Est: €120,000 - €140,000

Signed lower left: G. Metsu This depiction of a woman scouring a pot is an important work by Gabriel Metsu from his early period in Amsterdam, which can be dated to around 1655. The painting's provenance can be traced back to Amsterdam in the early 18th century, to the De Neufville collection, which was one of the most important in the Netherlands and included many of the greatest masterpieces of Dutch painting. The subject of the picture may be modest, but the painterly execution is all the more brilliant: Metsu depicts a kitchen maid standing at a window cleaning a kettle; she has placed other household equipment on the windowsill to her right and left. The maid turns her head towards the viewer whilst she works, looking straight out at them. Gabriel Metsu moved to Amsterdam in mid-1654, which was a significant step in the artist's career. His artistic training cannot be precisely reconstructed; he probably learned from Anthonie Claesz. de Grebber, Nikolas Knüpfer and Jan Weenix. It cannot be said for certain whether he also studied under Gerrit Dou, the leading artist of the Leiden Fijnschilder movement, as has been assumed due to thematic and stylistic affinities; what is certain, however, is that Dou was an important inspiration for the young artist as he set out to conquer the contested art market in the metropolis of Amsterdam. During his initial time in Amsterdam, Metsu specialised in genre scenes, as did fellow artists such as Gerard ter Borch and Nicolaes Maes. It was among this artistic milieu that the motif of kitchen maids carrying out their household tasks, as represented in the present painting, first emerged. Artists such as Jan Miense Moleaner and Jacob Vrel had also painted similar subjects, but always imbued them with sexual connotations. This element is omitted in Metsu: He dispenses with male characters in his paintings and instead depicts the women as individual three-quarter length figures, thus developing a new, more modern type of image (Waiboer, op. cit., p. 49). In addition to the present work, this group also includes “The Cook” in Munich (State Painting Collections, Alte Pinakothek); “A Kitchen Maid Preparing Fish” in Madrid (Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza); “A Kitchen Maid Peeling Apples” in Paris (fig. 1; Musée du Louvre) and “A Woman Washing Clothes” in Warsaw (Muzeum Lazienky Królewskie, Palac na Wodzie). What all of these images have in common is that the individual figure of the maid is shown doing her everyday tasks, but at the same time looking out at the viewer and thus directly interacting with them. Sometimes it is the surface of a scoured tin kettle, sometimes the fur of a dead rabbit, in which Metsu, almost casually, displays his painterly brilliance to the Amsterdam audience. Of this group of works, the present painting is the only one that is not housed in an important public museum today. A masterpiece among masterpieces - Gabriel Metsu’s Woman Scouring a Pan in the De Neufville Collection The year 1763 saw the end of the Seven Years' War with the Peace of Hubertusburg - a happy event that nevertheless led to an international financial crisis. Grain prices fell drastically, banks and trading houses could no longer service loans, and dozens of banks in Germany and the Netherlands went bankrupt, including the Gebroeders De Neufville in Amsterdam. Thus, Leendert Pieter de Neufville was forced to sell his superb collection of Old Masters, which he and, above all, his father Pieter Leendert de Neufville had built up. The works in this collection would be a credit to any world museum today: Jan Vermeer's “Milkmaid” (fig. 1; Rijksmuseum); Frans van Mieris' “Allegory of Painting (J. Paul Getty Museum), Rembrandt's “Portrait of the shipbuilder Jan Rijcksen and his wife Griet Jans” (Collection of H. M. The King, Buckingham Palace), Govaert Flinck's “Jacob's Blessing” (Rijksmuseum) or Nicolas Berchem's “Childhood of Zeus” (Mauritshuis) alongside works by Gerard ter Borch, Jan van der Heyden, Nicolas Knüpfer and many more. The collection also included three paintings by Gabriel Metsu, including this kitchen maid scouring a pot, a masterpiece that hung together with other breathtaking works of art in the de Neufville’s palace on the Herengracht in Amsterdam until the collection was auctioned.

Signé en bas au centre Bibliographie : Adriaan E. Waiboer, "Gabriel Metsu : life and work : a catalogue raisonné", New Haven, Yale University Press, 2012, p. 15-16 (repr.) et p. 166, cat. no. A-4.

Wheelock Jr., 'Review of Robinson 1974,' Art Bulletin 58, 1976, p.457.; Adriaan Waiboer, 'Gabriel Metsu', New Haven and London, 2010, p.319, no.D-23 (illustrated). Note: Dr Adriaan Waiboer, to whom we are grateful, has confirmed the attribution of the present lot after first-hand inspection, and has suggested its dating to the mid-1650s. Having initially rejected the attribution on the basis of black and white photographs (see A. Waiboer 'Gabriel Metsu', 2010, no.D-23), he has revised his opinion. Metsu was one of the leading figures in the founding of the Leiden Guild of Saint Luke, of which he became a member in 1648. Between circa 1650-2, the guild records show that Metsu was absent, and he probably spent part of this time in Utrecht. By 1657 he was living permanently in Amsterdam where he died prematurely at the age of 39. It was in the years 1653-54 that Metsu began to distance himself from the influence of Nicolaus Knupfer (c.1603-1655/60), the Utrecht painter who specialised in biblical and mythological subjects, and began to seek inspiration from a wider variety of artists. The canvas, thematically unrelated to and much smaller than the Knupferian paintings he had executed in the early 1650s, is evidence of the artist's change of direction, and belongs to a long tradition of Dutch and Flemish images of men drinking and smoking in a tavern - paintings commonly seen in collectors' homes, the shops of art dealers, and the workshops of other painters. The tone is meditative, rather than didactic or narrative, and there is a new emphasis on the rendering of everyday objects - the exquisitely rendered earthenware jug, for example, and the pipe - which suggests Metsu's imagination may have been captured by the still life works of Leiden artists, such as Jan Davidsz. de Heem (1606-1683/4) or Jan Lievens (1607-1674). Metsu's pictures were sought after by the urban elite in the cities where he worked, Leiden and Amsterdam. Yet he also had several noble patrons, including August II, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, who owned an unidentified 'tobacco smoker' (A. Waiboer, p.119). In the 18th century, his fame continued to grow and his paintings were more desirable than those of his contemporary Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675), with whom he exchanged mutual influence (A. Waiboer, pp.29-51). For a comparable composition by the artist, though on copper, see his 'Smoker seated at a table', now in private hands, which was offered at Sotheby's, London, 5 December 2007, lot 8 (see A. Waiboer, 'Smoker Seated at a Table ' (2017). In The Leiden Collection Catalogue, 3rd ed. Edited by Arthur K. Wheelock Jr. and Lara Yeager-Crasselt. New York, 2020).

WORKSHOP OF GABRIEL METSU (Leiden, 1629 - Amsterdam, 1667) Hunter dressing up after diving into a stream Oil on canvas, cm. 50x62. Framed The canvas is a beautiful antique replica of Gabriel Metsu's signed painting today at the De Leiden Collection. Although the character depicted is probably a self-portrait of the painter, his naked figure, hairless and muscular, is at the same time an ideal representation of the male body according to the canons of Dutch culture of the time. LÉOPOLD FLAMENG LE PESEUR D'OR

        Est: -

Le Peseur d'Or (The Money Exchanger) is a wonderful black and white etching on wire rod cream-colored paper, realized by Léopold Flameng, an after by the Flemish artist Gabriel Metsu (Leida, 1629 - Amsterdam, 1667). This is a superb specimen, a print proof before letter, with the title and the inscriptions below the image "Gabriel Metsu pinx/ Léopold Flameng sc.". This original print would have been published later on the Gazette des Beaux-Arts. This original etching represents a cynic money exchanger, whose only value in life is evil money and does not feel sympathy in front of a crying woman. The deep and vibrant blacks intensify the dramatic atmosphere, demonstrating the superb draftsmanship of the French artist. In good conditions, except for a usual yellowing of paper and a diffused foxing above all on the lower margin. The area of the etching is also intact. Leopold Flameng (Brussels, 1831 - Courgent, 1911) was a French artist, well-known for his etchings reproducing works by Jan van Eyck, Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Ingres and Delacroix, Boccaccio, Paul Scarron, Victor Hugo and François Coppée, producing one-hundred beautiful illustrations. He at first studied with Luigi Calamatta and Jean Gigoux. His talent as engraver was noticed by Charles Blanc, and his collaboration on the Gazette des Beaux-Arts with his fellow engraver Léon Gaucherel helped to improve the reputation of the publication. He was a medallist at the Universal Exhibition (1878), and was elected member of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1898. 35.5 x 27.8 (foglio), 19 x 13.5 (image)
