        Ettore Moretti. ca. 1933.

        Est: $1,400 - $1,700

ARTIST: LEOPOLDO METLICOVITZ (1868-1944) SIZE: 54 5/8 x 77 1/8 in./138.6 x 196 cm PRINTER: Ricordi, Milano DESCRIPTION: Metlicovitz gets straight to the point in this design for the Italian company that specialized in waterproof gear: here, the horse-drawn cart is protected by a massive rain-resistant tarpaulin. The solid black background gives no indication of a place or the motive of the journey, indicating that Ettore Moretti will protect you wherever you are. The horses, however, are out of luck for coverage. This is a two-sheet poster. (Art Deco; Animals; Italian)

        May. 15, 2024

Leopoldo Metlicovitz, Bozzetto per la Turandot. Ante 1926.

        Est: €3,000 - €6,000

LEOPOLDO METLICOVITZ (1868-1944) MOSTRA DEL CICLO E DELL'AUTOMOBILE / MILANO. 1907. 79x55 inches, 200 1/2x139 3/4 cm. G. Ricordi, Milan. Condition B / B+: small losses at edges; repaired tears, replaced losses, creases and abrasions in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds; offsetting in image; slight darkening in text; ink stamps in text and image. Two-sheets. Mounted on paper. For Milan's 1907 automobile and cycle show, Metlicovitz devised a stunning allegory of the old gods versus the new. Here, a winged deity is flying next to a speeding vehicle. In an unsuccessful attempt to keep up with modernity, he has even removed his laurel wreath to keep it from blowing off at such high speeds; and yet, the car is still in the lead. More than just a powerful, symbolic image, the poster is a master work of lithography, in which soft pastel shades are used to make a strong impression. Bolaffi p. 143, Menegazzi p. 81, Manifesti Italiani p. 38, Maitres 1900 p. 234.

Condition B+: losses, replaced losses, repaired tears, creases and abrasions in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds. Two-sheets. Mounted on Chartex. Born in Trieste, Metlicovitz went to Milan in 1892 and began working for the Ricordi publishing house, where he learned about poster design under the tutelage of Adolfo Hohenstein. Metlicovitz quickly became a master in his own right, establishing himself as one of the preeminent Italian graphic designers of his era. He was one of the most versatile poster artists and could transform his style from tender Art Nouveau imagery to statuesque allegory. Throughout his career, Metlicovitz produced over 100 posters for commercial products, exhibitions, operas and the film industry. This is the second poster Metlicovitz designed for this lighting company that produced early incandescent lights. For his first poster in 1897, the text touted the gas and alcohol appliances. Here the text extols the simplicity of use, safety, low maintenance costs and absence of bad smell. Manifesti 44.
