      Oil on canvas Signed, lower right 76 x 63.5cm (29 7/8 x 25in.) Distinguished artist and collector Lord Methuen first studied art at the Ruskin School, Oxford, and after the First World War worked with Sickert in the artist s studio, developing a similar style to the master in the French manner. His first exhibition took place at the Warren Gallery in 1928, and he subsequently showed at the Leicester galleries, Colnaghi s, Agnews and the R.A. He was made a full member of the R.A. in 1954.

Provenance: Ernest, Brown and Phillips, The Leicester Galleries, London; Humphrey Case (Keeper of Antiquities at the Ashmolean until 1982). Exhibited: Ernest, Brown and Phillips, Exhibition of works by Lord Methuen at The Leicester Galleries, March 1947, No. 4. Humphrey Case had a very bad motorcycle accident whilst serving in the Army. He was invalidated out to Corsham Court, where he met Lord Methuen at this point and the purchase of the paintings ensued thereafter.
