WILLARD LEROY METCALF AMERICAN, 1858-1925 OLD LYME, CONNECTICUT, CIRCA 1905-1907 Oil on canvas Lower left signed: W.L. METCALF Catalogue note: This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne being coordinated by Betty Krulik and the Willard Leroy Metcalf Catalogue Raisonne Project, Inc. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1858, Willard Leroy Metcalf showed artistic promise from an early age. He became the first student to receive a scholarship to the Museum of Fine Arts school in Boston at age nineteen, and furthered his education at the Académie Julien in Paris, studying under Gustave Boulanger and Jules Joseph Lefebvre. Metcalf returned to the East Coast in 1889, where he would exhibit his works at the American Society of Artists. Finding himself drawn to a more Impressionist style of painting, Metcalf — along with Childe Hassam, John Twachtman, Julian Alden Weir and six other artists — seceded from the Society to form a new collective called the Ten American Painters, or simply "The Ten." The group was seminal in the development of American Impressionism, achieving popularity and critical acclaim in the two decades they were active. Metcalf would become an integral figure in the artist's colonies of Old Lyme, Connecticut and Cornish, New Hampshire. The hazy New England landscapes he painted during this time would become his legacy. The catalog for a 1915 solo exhibition of his work at the Corcoran Gallery dubbed him the "poet laureate" of New England, who "sings their virtue and their grace with a loyalty which has not been misapplied." His work is currently on view at the National Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) and the Museum of Fine Art (Boston), among many others.

Acquired directly from the above sale. Avery Galleries, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Acquired directly from the above. Private Collection, Pennsylvania. Literature R.J. Boyle and Elizabeth de Veer, Sunlight and Shadow: The Life and Art of Willard L. Metcalf, Boston University and Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p. 87, no. 92 (illustrated). Note Known as the "poet laureate of the New England Hills," Massachusetts-based Willard L. Metcalf was a member of the Old Lyme Art Colony, one of the best known American art colonies and the first to embrace Impressionism. Along with fellow artists that included Childe Hassam, John Henry Twachtman and J. Alden Weir, Metcalf was also a member of The Ten, formed in 1898 as a rejection of the guiding principles of the more conservative Society of American Artists. He is said to have been the first American painter to ever travel to Giverny, home of Claude Monet. The winner of the Webb Prize at the aforementioned Society of American Artists’ Annual Exhibition, Metcalf was also an illustrator, and taught at both the Cooper Institute and the Art Students League. This was followed by a period of personal setbacks for the artist in the early 1900s, though it was to be followed by what is now referred to as Metcalf’s “Impressionist Renaissance.” Metcalf started to paint nocturnes later in his career, and did so in an unusual fashion in that he avoided direct, expected representations of the stars and the moonlight, but instead focused on the refracted half-light and their effects. The present work is arguably one of Metcalf's most romantic paintings, providing ample evidence of his mastery of paint, through a staccato brushwork and an expertly restricted color palette. Far from being tempted by the sublime or even bound to a narrative, Metcalf here shows sole interest in the ambiance, the mood of the landscape by capturing its light, texture and colors. By doing so, Metcalf seems to apply Thoreau's methodology of experiencing, and communicating with the physical world. This newfound emotion towards the landscape highly contrasts with Metcalf's earlier, naturalistic period, and is in fact reflected by the mysterious title of the work itself, which gives carte blanche to the viewer to identify the location, and the meaning of the scene. Here, Metcalf explores the ordinary beauty of a night scene in New England, and captures the way the bushes and trees cast their half-amusing, half-menacing shadows onto the landscape, the way that a simple white house harmoniously blends in with its surroundings, becoming a part of nature itself. As Francis Murphy states, "what Metcalf succeeded in doing was making images of the physical world that never strive toward 'higher meaning.'" Frame: 31 7/8 x 32 x 1 1/4 in. The relined canvas in overall very good condition. The paint was applied in fragments, leaving some parts of the canvas bare: this is part of the artist's working method. Examination under UV light reveals careful inpainting in localized areas: at center left, on the house's side, a bit of the roof and in the sky surrounding the tallest tree. Minor retouching parallel to this at center right, in between the trees close to the extreme right edge. Remnants of greenish varnish glowing residually, proving the work was selectively cleaned. See specialist's pictures for more details.Tony pinpoint to pinhead size triangular losses at paint's contractions' intersections (due to age).

Other Notes: This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne being coordinated by Betty Krulik and the Willard Leroy Metcalf Catalogue Raisonne Project, Inc. A founding member of the famed group "The Ten," Willard Leroy Metcalf has cemented his reputation as a leading figure in American Impressionism. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1858, Metcalf begin his artistic training at an early age. His parents, interested in the occult, divined that their son was destined to be a painter and encouraged him in that direction. By 1875 he was apprenticed to wood engraver, George Loring Brown. In 1876, Metcalf was one of five students offered a scholarship to attend the new School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. From 1877-1876 Metcalf took artistic anatomy courses from Dr. William Rimmer, an odd personality in the Boston artistic circle. Despite this, John La Farge, William Morris Hunt and Frank Benson all studied with Rimmer. Metcalf's figure drawings improved during this period. It was during this time, as a young artist, when Metcalf painted In the Garden. Although he had not yet travelled to France, Metcalf was clearly absorbing a French Impressionist style and moving away from the influence of George Loring Brown. Elizabeth de Veer notes in Sunlight and Shadow, "Two Vermont pictures of 1878, Landscape with Chickens, painted at Bridgewater, and In the Garden, probably done in Woodstock, strongly reflect the French style. The figure in In the Garden is reminiscent not only of Millet, in an American light, but also of Winslow Homer's figure pieces of the late sixties and early seventies, although the overall feeling is French." The authors go on to describe the availability of paintings by American artists emulating a Barbizon style in Boston museums and private collections. Metcalf would have seen works by George Inness, Winckworth Allan Gay and Thomas Robinson. William Morris Hunt was a particularly influential figure in the Boston art scene bringing works by French Barbizon artists Couture and Millet to his Boston home. 1 In the Garden is an important work in Metcalf's oeuvre. It begins the story of a skilled artist who was drawn to French Impressionism from the start. Five years after the painting was completed, Metcalf travelled to France and immersed himself in the French Impressionist style. A decade or so later he would return to the States and become a distinctly American artist and the preeminent Impressionist painter of New England landscapes (see lot 58). 1 Elizabeth de Veer and Richard Boyle, Sunlight and Shadow: The Life and Art of Willard Leroy Metcalf, New York: Abbeville Press, 1987, pp. 168-169. tags: oil painting, garden, 19th century, The Ten, woman
