            Est: $2,000 - $3,000

1972 Carlton Premiership Medal,  with the front design of a footballer by Andor Meszaros (1900-72, who had also designed the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games medals), the reverse shows players names in their positions, surrounded by text 'Victorian Football League/ Carlton: Premiers: 1972'.  These medals were presented exclusively to the players and officials of the winning team. 1972 marked the introduction of the Final 5 for the first time in VFL history, one year too late for Carlton, which had finished fifth in the previous year. Carlton and Richmond were by far the best two clubs during the home and away season, with the Blues finishing 1st with an 18 win, 1 draw and 3 loss record, 2 points ahead of the Tigers in second place. The club played consistent footy all year, never losing two games in a row. Winning streaks included 5 in a row (rounds 5 to 9) and 8 in a row to finish the last eight home and away games. St Kilda were slightly better than Carlton in the first half of the Preliminary Final, holding an 11 point half time lead. The Blues would show why they were currently a competition power in the second half, kicking 9 goals to 5 to beat the Saints by 16 points, and advance to the clubs fourth Grand Final in five years. Carlton would smash Richmond in the Grand Final, kicking 8 goals in the first quarter, 10 goals in the second, and 7 goals in the third to lead by 54 points at three quarter time. The Tigers would kick 7 goals to 3 in the final term to add some respectability to the final score, but the result was never in doubt. Carlton won by 27 points.

ANDORMESZAROS (1900-1972) A pair of reliefs depicting merino rams bronze signed with monogram lower right Height 41cm; Width 41cm; Depth 11cm PROVENANCE: International Wool Secretariat building, Ilkley, Yorkshire, United Kingdom OTHER NOTES: Born in Budapest, Hungary, Meszaros studied architecture there and then building engineering in Vienna between 1919 and 1927. He went to the Academie Julien in Paris where L. Henri Bouchard and P. M. Landowski introduced him to abstract and cubist forms; at night he learned carving in Jószef Csáky's studio. After his return to Budapest he worked as an architect but left to avoid the impending war and arrived in Melbourne in 1939 and was employed by the architectural firms of J. V. T. Ward and Marsh & Michaelson. In 1940 he began to make a living from sculpture. His early works included a series of three carved stone figures for Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney: 'Maternity' (1944), 'The Surgeon' (1945) and 'King George V' (1946). In 1949 he went to England where he was commissioned to sculpt the altarpiece for St Anselm's Chapel in Canterbury Cathedral. He returned to Australia and was commissioned by many schools and churches including Shore School, St Peter's Cathedral Adelaide, All Saints Church Brisbane, and his bas-reliefs in stone and bronze adorn many civic buildings, among them the Shrine of Remembrance, Brisbane, the Supreme Court, Darwin, and Sydney's international air-terminal with his memorial to Charles Ulm.
