  • Charles Meryon,  The Vampire
    Mar. 12, 2025

    Charles Meryon,  The Vampire

    Est: £300 - £400

Charles Meryon,  French 1821-1868-  The Vampire;  etching, signed with initials 'CM' and signed 'C Meryon del. sculp' (within the plate, lower left), 17 x 12.8 cm. (unframed / mounted).  Provenance:  The collection of Peter and Ann Mactaggart: https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2020/jun/22/peter-mactaggart-obituary Note:  The Metropolitan Museum in New York notes how 'Meryon was plagued by mental illness and spent the last years of his brief life in an asylum. The dark, gothic tenor that characterizes many of his prints has been interpreted as symptomatic of his tumultuous life. This print, taken from his album Eaux-fortes sur Paris, shows a grotesque gargoyle from Notre-Dame Cathedral against an aerial view of the expanding French capital. Surrounded by a flock of darkly colored birds, the sculpture takes on a menacing, monstrous appearance, especially as it dominates the right half of the composition. Meryon added a verse of his own creation to this later state of the print, describing the figure as an "insatiable vampire, eternal lust" who "covets its food in the great city."'

    Est: $100 - $200

Charles Meryon French, (1821 - 1868) Tomb of Moliere, 1854 etching Le Tombeau de Molière (au Père-Lachaise) Molière's tomb, Père-Lachaise Cemetery, Paris. From the private collection of Bret Waller and Mary Lou Dooley Waller, Indianapolis, Indiana. Biography from the Archives of askART: Between 1843 and 1846 Charles Meryon was based at Akaroa, New Zealand with the French Naval corvette, Le Rhin, which had been assigned to protect the interests of the French settlement there. An etching by Meryon shows local sailors and/or colonists dragging a fishing net back to shore, a type of fishing called seine fishing. This etching comes from a group of five plates Meryon made for his Album of Souvenirs du Voyage du Rhin, which he began in 1860. Born in Paris, Meryon was the illegitimate son of an English doctor, for which he blamed many of the problems he faced in later life. Meryon had studied watercolor painting after he finished his naval training and, on his return to France in 1846, he decided to become an artist. He studied under the French printmaker Eugéne Bléry (1805 -1887). Meryon was admitted to the Saint Maurice asylum on the outskirts of Paris between 1858 and 1859. He exhibited at the International Exhibition in London in 1862 but in 1866 he was re-admitted to Saint-Maurice where he died. Courtesy of Christchurch Gallery
