From the private collection of Bret Waller and Mary Lou Dooley Waller, Indianapolis, Indiana. Biography from the Archives of askART: Between 1843 and 1846 Charles Meryon was based at Akaroa, New Zealand with the French Naval corvette, Le Rhin, which had been assigned to protect the interests of the French settlement there. An etching by Meryon shows local sailors and/or colonists dragging a fishing net back to shore, a type of fishing called seine fishing. This etching comes from a group of five plates Meryon made for his Album of Souvenirs du Voyage du Rhin, which he began in 1860. Born in Paris, Meryon was the illegitimate son of an English doctor, for which he blamed many of the problems he faced in later life. Meryon had studied watercolor painting after he finished his naval training and, on his return to France in 1846, he decided to become an artist. He studied under the French printmaker Eugéne Bléry (1805 -1887). Meryon was admitted to the Saint Maurice asylum on the outskirts of Paris between 1858 and 1859. He exhibited at the International Exhibition in London in 1862 but in 1866 he was re-admitted to Saint-Maurice where he died. Courtesy of Christchurch Gallery

This lot contains two etchings: Le Ministere de la Marine ("The Admiralty"), published by Cadart & Luquet; and New Zealand - Presqu'ile de Banks, Pointe des Charbonniers, Akaroa (Seine fishing off Colliers' Point, Akaroa, Banks Peninsula, 1845). The smaller print has mat burn and minor foxing. There are minor signs of foxing to the larger print as well. The frames measure 13 1/2" x 12" and 14 1/2" x 22". In-house shipping is available. CHARLES MERYON Le Petit Pont. Etching and drypoint, 1850. 244x185 mm; 9 1/2x7 1/4 inches, full margins. Fifth state (of 9), with part of the right border line descending into the lower margin and before the publication in L'artisque. A superb, richly-inked and early impression with very strong contrasts. Provenance: Unidentified collector, orange ink stamp of a centaur lower right (not in Lugt). Schneiderman 20. With— Five reproduction prints after Meryon's etchings. Meryon (1821-1868) was an important mid-19th century French printmaker; he was born in Paris and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. Meryon was known for his intricately detailed etchings, representing many of the old Parisian neighborhoods and Gothic architecture that were demolished under Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann's massive urban renewal program. His works often combined elements of fantasy and reality to create a unique vision of the city. Meryon had a difficult life, suffering from mental illness and financial issues. He was eventually committed to a mental institution in 1868. While largely forgotten by collectors during the late 19th century, his work nevertheless influenced countless printmakers well into the early 20th century and his etchings were subsequently sought after and widely collected to this day.
